The final trial took place in a meditation hall carved into the mountain itself. The ninety-seven remaining candidates sat in neat rows, each before a jade slip containing a fragment of a cultivation technique.
Elder Shen stood at the front. "You have one hour to comprehend what you can from the technique fragment. At the end, you will demonstrate your understanding. Those who show genuine comprehension pass. Those who merely memorize fail."
Kai picked up his jade slip and pressed it to his forehead, allowing the information to flow into his mind.
The technique was called "Flowing River Steps"—a movement technique that allowed cultivators to move like water, fluid and unpredictable. It was a Foundation Establishment level technique, nothing special.
Except Kai had created the advanced version of this technique in his previous life. The "Ten Thousand Rivers Return" technique that allowed instant teleportation across vast distances by becoming one with the flow of spiritual energy itself.
He knew this technique inside and out, including its three major flaws and seven minor weaknesses.
Don't show off too much. Demonstrate understanding, not mastery.
Around him, other candidates were frowning in concentration. Some looked frustrated. A few looked lost.
Kai glanced sideways and found Yuhan three rows over, his expression serene. Their eyes met for a brief moment, and Yuhan's lip quirked in the tiniest smile.
He's probably got some advanced version of his technique too. We really can't help being overqualified for this.
The hour passed quickly. Then Elder Shen called them forward one by one to demonstrate.
Most candidates could execute the basic movements but lacked true understanding. They'd memorized the steps without grasping the underlying principle of "becoming like water."
Kai's brother Shen Wei did respectably, showing genuine comprehension even if his execution was clumsy. Shen Jian passed as well, though barely.
Then it was Yuhan's turn. His technique fragment had been a sword technique called "Falling Leaves Blade."
Yuhan drew his sword—a beautiful weapon with a white blade that seemed to glow with inner light—and moved.
It wasn't the basic Falling Leaves Blade. It was something transcendent. Each movement flowed into the next like a natural progression, and Kai could see the underlying principle: not falling leaves, but the entire cycle of seasons condensed into sword strikes.
He's showing them a glimpse of what he'll become. The Sword Saint whose blade could cut through dimensions.
Elder Shen watched with undisguised awe. "That was... you've grasped not just the technique but its essence. Its dao. Extraordinary."
Yuhan bowed and returned to his seat, but not before catching Kai's eye again.
Your turn to show off.
When Kai's name was called, he stood and walked to the demonstration area. He didn't need a weapon for Flowing River Steps—it was pure movement.
He began slowly, executing the basic forms from the jade slip. Left foot forward, weight shifting, spiritual energy flowing through the meridians to lighten the body.
But then Kai let a fraction of his true understanding bleed through. His movements became truly fluid, weight becoming meaningless. For three seconds, he moved like water itself—not constrained by normal physics, flowing around obstacles that didn't exist, responding to attacks that hadn't been thrown.
He stopped precisely at the boundary between "impressive genius" and "impossibly suspicious."
Elder Shen was nodding slowly. "You've understood the core principle. Flow, adaptation, effortless movement. Well done."
But Kai noticed something else. Elder Mei, still watching from the upper gallery, was writing something down. And her expression was calculating.
She's definitely reporting back to the Phoenix Flame Sect. Two prodigies appearing at once, both with comprehension far beyond their years.
As Kai returned to his seat, he filed that concern away for later. Right now, he had to focus on passing this examination without revealing too much.
The trials continued. By the end, only thirty candidates remained.
Elder Shen stood before them, radiating satisfaction. "Congratulations. You are now outer disciples of the Azure Sky Sect. Tomorrow, you will be assigned to your respective halls and begin your formal training. Today, celebrate your achievement."
Cheers erupted from the successful candidates and their families. Kai's father was beaming, already pushing through the crowd toward him. His brothers looked torn between pride and jealousy.
But Kai's attention was on Yuhan, who was being swarmed by sect elders, all eager to take credit for recruiting such a talent.
Their eyes met across the chaos, and Yuhan's expression said clearly: Later. We need to talk.
Kai nodded minutely. They had passed the examination. Now came the harder part: navigating sect politics, preventing future disasters, and somehow finding time for whatever this thing between them was becoming.
One step at a time. Just like before.
Except this time, he wasn't alone.
