Chapter 439: Last Stand: The Supernova
"Arbok! Earthquake!"
Since Mega Starmie wanted to play in the water, Kenji was more than happy to
accommodate it—on his own terms.
The obsidian serpent slammed its massive tail into the fractured remains of the
island. The ground didn't just shake; it groaned and split open, jagged fissures
racing across the rock. If Kenji allowed this to continue, the last dry ground
in the arena would vanish, turning the entire battlefield into a singular, vast
Toxic Sea.
Lawson wasn't about to let the arena be dictated so easily.
"Psyshock!"
"QIA!"
Mega Starmie's central gem pulsed, firing a wave of solidified psychic force at
the serpent. Arbok didn't stay to trade; it dove headfirst into the violet,
acidic waters.
"Arbok! Draco Meteor!"
"SHAAAAA!"
The surface of the toxic water erupted as a sphere of orange draconic energy was
launched into the darkening sky.
BOOM!
The sphere reached its apex and shattered into a hundred falling stars. Lawson
felt a headache coming on. This Arbok was truly an anomaly—it was utilizing
high-level Dragon-type nukes as if it were a pseudo-legendary.
Because Arbok relied almost entirely on its physical strength and venom, the
Special Attack drop from Draco Meteor was a meaningless penalty. The move wasn't
even intended to hit the star; its target was the island itself.
The already cratered and cracked land was the "Final Straw."
CRACK—SHATTER!
The remaining rock disintegrated under the bombardment of falling meteors,
falling into the deep moat like a set of discarded toy blocks. The last dry
footing was gone. Beneath them was only the Toxic Sea.
Mega Starmie could hover using its psychic powers, but flying cost energy. In
the air, its maneuverability was halved, making it a sitting duck for a surprise
attack from the depths.
Lawson realized his opponent was forcing a "Checkmate." Starmie's legendary
stamina, fueled by Recover, was being bled dry by the environmental pressure.
Every second it spent hovering or touching the acidic mist, it had to burn
energy on Safeguard and Recover just to stay functional.
"Finish this, Starmie! Zen Aqua-Impact!"
"QIAAAAAA!"
Mega Starmie didn't hold back. It wreathed its humanoid frame in a high-pressure
veil of water and ignited its central core with psychic energy.
This was a three-way combination: Aqua Jet + Zen Headbutt + Double-Edge. It
moved with the speed of a bullet and the weight of a falling moon.
"Protect!"
THOOM!
A shimmering pale-green barrier manifested in front of Arbok as it surged from
the water. Mega Starmie slammed into the shield with a sound like a high-speed
train collision.
Crack...
The Protect barrier webbed with fractures, but it held. In the split-second of
lag after the impact, Arbok counter-attacked.
Its fangs dripped with a mixture of dark-purple venom and roiling black energy.
Behind its physical head, a spectral, draconic silhouette manifested, its jaws
mimicking the serpent's own.
Nightmare Dragon Rush!
BOOM!
The Protect shield shattered as Arbok lunged through it. It slammed into Mega
Starmie, the physical force behind the hit amplified by the draconic aura. The
cosmic guardian was launched backward, skipping across the toxic water.
Mega Starmie struggled to right itself, its central gem flashing a frantic red.
Between the Toxic corrosion and that last impact, it was at its breaking point.
"Starmie! Last Stand: Supernova!"
"QIA!"
The star let out a digital-sounding roar. Suddenly, its entire body began to
glow with a blinding, incandescent white light.
Kenji's eyes widened. "Get back, Arbok! Full retreat!"
He knew this move. He had studied Lawson's old tournament tapes. This was the
master's ultimate gambit: the combination of Explosion and Endure.
Explosion was a 250-power nuke that usually knocked out the user. But by timing
it with Endure, Starmie could detonate its entire energy reserve and still
remain standing with 1 HP. Most terrifyingly, Mega Starmie had compressed the
area of effect; instead of a wide blast, it was a focused, directional
supernova.
The white-hot "Ultraman" star launched itself with a final Aqua Jet, ignoring
the acid and the exhaustion. It was a kamikaze strike.
Arbok switched to its Swift-Strike Pattern, its body coiling and snapping
through the water in a desperate attempt to outrun the light. It was a race
against a detonating sun.
The white light grew until it consumed the entire arena.
"SHH-BOOOOOOOOOOOOM!"
The explosion was deafening. The stadium's reinforced barriers vibrated so
violently the glass groaned.
The "Toxic Sea" boiled. The acid was vaporized by the sheer heat, turning the
arena into a graveyard of thick, violet mist. The water level in the moat
visibly dropped by several inches as thousands of gallons were turned to steam
in an instant.
Kenji shielded his eyes, his heart hammering. "Did it hold?"
As the blinding light faded and the steam began to drift away, the final results
of the Northwest's first half were finally revealed.
