Chapter 430: The Vitality Essence
Among all species, Bug-type Pokémon undeniably possess the shortest lifespans.
While most of the members on Kenji's team—once they reached the Master
Tier—could look forward to centuries of life, his Beedrill was the outlier. A
Ninetales could easily see a millennium pass. Darkrai and Annihilape, as a
Mythical and a Ghost-type respectively, didn't even have a concept of "dying of
old age."
In the grand scheme of things, this Vitality Essence was most crucial for Kenji
himself and his first partner, Beedrill.
Wait... Vitality Essence?
Kenji's eyes widened as a realization struck him. He scrambled to open his
travel pack, digging through the inner lining until his fingers brushed against
a cold, jagged object.
It was the specialized Mega Stone—the "gift" Silas Matsuma had left him at the
Battle Tower. It wasn't a standard stone; it was the one R-Organization had
spent decades perfecting, infused with the destructive essence of Yveltal, the
God of Death.
During their long conversation at the tower, Silas had shared his history with
Kenji. Like Kenji, Silas had come from nothing. He wasn't born in the Huaxia
League, but in a small, coastal town in the Kanto region.
In that distant land, children could become trainers at the age of ten,
receiving a "Starter" from the local lab. But the tuition for the prestigious
academies was astronomical, far beyond the reach of a boy whose parents had been
killed by a rampaging wild Pokémon.
Silas Matsuma had started his journey not as a student, but as a "Bug Catcher."
His first partner had been a Weedle. According to Silas, when they first met,
the poor creature had been half-eaten by a predator, clinging to life by a
thread. Kenji's rise was fueled by a System; Silas's rise had been fueled by a
rare, innate talent: Viridian Power.
It was this "Power of the Forest" that allowed Silas to heal his Weedle, boost
its potential, and eventually rise to become a Gym Leader—and later, the shadow
emperor of the global underworld.
Silas had explained that the only reason his Beedrill could survive the
Yveltal-infused Mega Stone was because he constantly funneled his own Viridian
Power—his own life force—into the Pokémon during combat to offset the stone's
soul-draining side effects.
Now, Kenji had an alternative. He didn't have Viridian Power, but he had
Vitality Essence.
Kenji gripped the dark Mega Stone tightly before tucking it back into his bag.
It was a terrifying trump card—one he hoped he'd never have to use. But in a
world where Mewtwo was still at large, having a way to safely tap into the power
of a God of Death was a comforting thought.
Kenji focused on the System interface. In his inventory, a new meter had
appeared with the number "1" beside it.
Let's see what this actually does.
He chose to apply the single unit of Vitality Essence to himself.
The moment the count hit zero, a wave of frigid, refreshing energy washed over
him. It wasn't cold in an unpleasant way; it felt like diving into a mountain
spring in the middle of a desert.
Kenji nearly let out a groan of pure satisfaction. The perpetual mental fog from
weeks of travel and high-stakes battling vanished instantly. His vision
sharpened, the colors of the room becoming more vivid, and the lingering ache in
his muscles from training disappeared.
Incredible.
He didn't know exactly how many days or years that one point had added to his
life, but the physical "upgrade" alone was worth it. And the best part? He got
another one every twenty-four hours. Between this and other potential Hex Cores
like Devil's Deal or Tiny Giant, he could eventually become functionally
immortal.
Two weeks later, Kenji arrived at the Northwest Regional Headquarters.
The final pillar. The Northwest Elite Four.
Once he cleared this hurdle, only the Grand Champion challenge remained. The
thought sent a surge of adrenaline through his chest. He took a steadying breath
and pushed through the massive steel doors of the arena.
"Good afternoon, Elite Four Lawson."
"Hahaha! I've been watching the news, kid. I was starting to wonder if you'd
gotten lost on the way here!"
Lawson was the strongest of the four regional leaders, but also the oldest. His
face was a map of deep wrinkles, framed by a shock of silver hair and a
well-groomed beard. He sat on a raised dais, looking every bit the veteran
commander.
"You're the head of the four," Kenji said with a respectful grin. "I had to save
the best for last."
Lawson stood up, his eyes twinkling with a sharp, youthful energy that belied
his age. "Well said. I might be an old man, but my partners haven't slowed down
a bit. Let's see if the 'New Star' of Huaxia can handle a real storm."
Kenji followed the old master to the battlefield. The arena was unique: a solid
central island of rock surrounded by a deep, swirling moat of water. It was the
perfect stage for a specialist who favored terrain control.
"The match... begins!" the referee announced, snapping a signal flag down.
"Go! Pelipper!" Lawson roared.
"I'm counting on you! Gyarados!"
Two flashes of light hit the field. The moment Pelipper emerged, the sky above
the arena darkened, and a heavy, rhythmic downpour began to lash the stadium.
