Chapter 158 - Sexuality and Rationality (Part 59 - Surrounded In Darkness)

The charcoal embers inside the cavern pit crackle, spitting a dying ember that pops against a wet, lichen-crusted stone. Grey, acrid smoke drifts lazily toward the dark roof of the cave, swirling through the cold air before dissolving into the gloom. Outside, a heavy, suffocating silence hangs over the ancient forest, broken only by the rhythmic, dripping patter of rainwater falling from broad pine needles onto the soaked leaf-mould below. The dampness clings to everything—to the rusted iron buckles of supply packs, to the dull plates of bruised shoulder armor, and to the cold, pale skin of fatigued men staring hollow-eyed into the embers.

Aldo stands beside Officer Watkins, his tall, stoic frame silhouetted against the weak firelight. His face remains a mask of unreadable, cold calculation, his eyes sharp and steady despite the thick layer of soot, dried black gore, and dried mud caking his jawline. He pulls his waterproof oilskin pack tighter over his shoulder, his voice dropping into a flat, measured monotone as he delivers his report.

"The Iron Crag is compromised," Aldo says, his eyes never leaving Watkins' pale face. "It was a fully operational supply depot. Weapons, black powder kegs, uniforms bearing Volkov's rebel crest, and official shipping manifests signed under Lady Priscilla Lowe's seal. They are preparing a synchronized assault. Distraction attacks along the outer walls of Thromium on July 26th to draw the garrison out, followed by an insider coup led by Lowe within the inner keep."

Watkins listens in absolute, stony silence. His left arm remains bound tightly against his ribs in blood-soaked linen, his skin holding a ghastly, translucent paleness from severe blood loss. His lips press into a razor-thin line. Slowly, without uttering a single word, he reaches into his leather coat with his uninjured hand and pulls out a heavy, spherical Communication Orb. The polished crystal surface, wrapped in delicate silver filigree, glows with a faint, pulsing violet light as Watkins channels his remaining energy into it.

He raises the orb to his mouth, speaking in short, clipped military tones, relaying every detail of Aldo's report—the rebel weapons, Priscilla Lowe's treason, the July 26th timeline, and the impending coup at Thromium. He holds the glowing sphere for a long moment, listening to the faint, crackling static echoing from the other side, before the light dies out, leaving the crystal dark and cold.

Watkins lowers the orb, his hand trembling slightly as he slips it back into his pocket. He lets out a slow, raspy breath that turns into a faint cloud of steam in the chilly cave air.

Comtois, sitting on a broken ammunition crate nearby, leans forward. He rests his heavy forearms on his knees, his broad chest rising and falling as he wipes a thick mixture of sweat and grime from his forehead with his sleeve. He looks at Watkins, his brow furrowed with anxious tension.

"Well?" Comtois asks, his voice deep and rough. "Are they sending reinforcements? Do we get a fresh brigade to plug this hole?"

Watkins leans his head back against the damp rock wall, his jaw clenching tightly. "Yes. They are dispatching a full Regiment."

Hano, crouching by the fire as he blows softly on a smoldering piece of tinder, stops instantly. He looks up, his dark eyes wide, his jaw tightening into a bitter frown.

"A Regiment?" Comtois asks, a brief flicker of hope crossing his dirty face. "When do they drop in?"

"Three days," Watkins replies flatly. "It will take them three days to march from the eastern staging grounds and reach this sector."

Hano lets out a long, heavy sigh, shaking his head slowly as he tosses the tinder back into the ashes. "Three days..." he mutters, his tone dripping with dark, exhausted irony. "That's like telling us to hold our ground at Carravin all over again."

Comtois lets out a loud, dry bark of a laugh, smacking his palm against his thigh as he shakes his head at Hano. "Listen to yourself, Hano! You're acting like we're out here fighting a whole bloody imperial rebel army! It's not going to be that big. At most, what? A few thousand scattered scoundrels hiding in the brush?"

Hano doesn't laugh. He turns his head slowly, his eyes narrowing as he looks past Comtois, fixing his gaze straight on Officer Watkins. "How many troops do you actually have left under your command right now, Captain?"

Watkins closes his eyes for a brief second, calculating the casualties in his head before opening them again. "About five hundred effective fighting men."

Comtois instantly jumps in, waving his hand flippantly with a broad, arrogant grin, though his eyes dart nervously toward the cave entrance. "Plus the logistics team, Captain! That's five hundred and twenty!"

Aldo doesn't join in the light banter. He steps forward, his heavy boots making a dull thud on the dirt floor as he looks down at the map spread out over a wooden box. His face remains dead serious, his mind working through the numbers with cold, mathematical precision.

"Duke Ferris II must possess his own standing army," Aldo says, his voice cutting through the air like a cold blade. "The Duchy of Thromium, as we have seen over these past few weeks throughout July, is quite prosperous. A territory with that much wealth and trade does not leave its borders undefended."

Watkins turns his head toward Aldo, letting out a weak, humorless snort. "You overestimate the nobility, Aldo. Most of these local lords spend their coin on silk and wine. Duke Ferris and the local aristocrats probably have a few dozen house guards at most. The rest rely entirely on municipal levies."

Watkins pauses, wincing slightly as he shifts his injured shoulder, then looks up at Aldo. "How many troops did the Guard you set up back in Carravin have?"

Aldo answers without a moment's hesitation, his tone flat and unvarnished. "They are merely city guards. They handle local brawls, tax collection, and minor petty thieves. They are not fighting troops. Put them in front of a rebel volley, and they will break and run in ten seconds."

Onaga, sitting quietly in the shadows near the edge of the cavern with his long spear resting across his lap, speaks up. His voice is low, calm, and measured, cutting through the rising anxiety in the cave like a steadying anchor.

"We don't even know where the main body of the rebellion is coming from yet," Onaga says softly, his thumb running along the polished wooden shaft of his spear. "Let's gather information about it first before we start counting our graves."

Watkins turns his tired eyes toward Onaga, raising a pale eyebrow. "And where do you think they are, Onaga?"

Onaga tilts his head slightly, his gaze drifting toward the dark, weeping trees visible through the mouth of the cave. "We have absolutely no idea. We are deep in the forest, and we cannot even be sure if they are watching us right now. They could be hiding in the deep woods, or scattered throughout the farming villages and remote hamlets of Thromium, blending in with the locals. When we drive them out of one position, they simply scatter and flee elsewhere."

A heavy, oppressive silence settles over the small group once more. The crackle of the dying hearth fire and the soft, flickering light dancing across the rock walls do little to warm the chilling atmosphere gripping the squad. It is a tactical stalemate—trapped in a vast, dark wilderness, surrounded by unseen enemies, holding a ticking clock with three days written on it.

Suddenly, a faint, distinct rustle echoes from the dense thicket of ferns just thirty yards outside the cavern entrance.

Rustle. Snap.

The ambient forest noises instantly vanish. No birds sing; no nocturnal insects chirp. Even the rain seems to fall in muted, hesitant drops.

Every man in the cave freezes. Comtois' smile vanishes in a fraction of a second, his hand dropping instantly to the hilt of his broadsword. Onaga silently shifts his weight onto his back foot, lowering his spear tip. Aldo's right hand glides down to the butt of his heavy flintlock pistol, his body dropping into a low, relaxed crouch.

Comtois narrows his eyes, peering into the pitch-black shadows outside. He reaches out, grabbing a long wooden measuring stick leaning against a crate, and ties a lit pitch torch tightly to the top end with a scrap of hemp twine.

Holding the bottom of the stick, Comtois drops down onto his belly, crawling flat against the cold, muddy ground like a hunting dog. He slowly pushes the long stick out of the cave entrance, elevating the lit torch high above the bushes while keeping his own body concealed beneath the stone ledge.

The bright amber light of the torch illuminates the wet fronds of the surrounding ferns.

THWANG! BANG!

A sharp, violent gunshot shatters the quiet night air. A high-velocity lead ball screams through the darkness, striking the straw scarecrow target tied to a nearby post right behind the torch, blowing a huge spray of dry yellow straw into the air.

"Whoa!" Comtois yells, his face going pale. He violently drops the wooden stick, letting the flaming torch crash into the mud, and frantically scrambles backward on his hands and knees, kicking up dirt as he retreats back into the safety of the cave.

"We're surrounded!" Comtois pants, his chest heaving as he lunges behind a stone ledge. "They're right outside the perimeter!"

Watkins doesn't panic. He reacts with the swift, ruthless discipline of an experienced commander. He snaps his head toward a robed Warmage standing near the back of the cave, holding a carved wooden staff topped with a glowing blue focus stone.

"Warmage! Cast a mana detection spell, now!" Watkins roars. "Locate their firing position!"

The Warmage instantly steps forward, chanting a series of low, resonant incantations in a ancient tongue. He sweeps his wooden staff in a wide arc. A ripple of faint blue energy pulses outward from the tip of the staff, washing over the dark treeline outside like an invisible wave. A concentrated cluster of bright, pulsating mana signatures lights up in the shadows thirty paces to the left of the path.

"Target locked! Thirty paces left, behind the fallen oak!" the Warmage shouts.

Watkins raises his glowing magic gun with his uninjured right hand, tracking the line designated by the spell. He pulls the trigger.

BOOM!

A brilliant, blinding streak of vivid blue magical light erupts from the barrel, cutting through the dark woods like a bolt of lightning. A split second later, a deafening explosion shakes the ground outside, tearing through the fallen oak and showering the area in dirt, shredded bark, and flying wood splinters.

The Warmage instantly begins chanting again, sweeping his staff to scan the perimeter for remaining signatures. "Casting secondary sweep!"

Aldo doesn't wait to see the results of the spell. He reaches down, grabbing his heavy chainmail shirt and pulling it over his head with a metallic rustle. The interlocking steel rings settle heavily against his chest. Without missing a beat, he straps his rigid iron plate armor over his torso, tightening the leather buckles across his back with sharp, practiced tugs.

"Put on your armor. Everyone," Aldo commands, his voice rising above the ringing in their ears. "Gear up and follow me. We break through their line now before they can consolidate!"

The squad moves as one. Conscripts and veterans alike throw on their heavy iron plates, buckling helmets and slinging cartridge boxes. Aldo grips his flintlock musket in his left hand and draws his broad hunting knife with his right, striding straight out of the cave entrance into the wet, smoke-filled night.

The moment Aldo's boots hit the dense brush along the edge of the path, a dark figure explodes out of the high ferns.

A tall rebel fighter, his face smeared with dark mud, lunges forward with all his weight, thrusting a long iron-tipped spear straight at Onaga's throat.

CLANG!

The sharp spearhead strikes Onaga squarely at the base of his neck. But instead of tearing through flesh, the point hits the heavy weave of Onaga's steel chainmail shirt, glancing off the interlocking rings with a shower of tiny sparks. The force of the blow pushes Onaga back a step, but the chainmail holds completely intact.

"Get him!" Comtois roars.

Before the spearman can pull back his weapon, three of Aldo's men surge forward in a wave. They slam into the rebel, dragging him down into the wet mud and pinning his arms behind his back with violent efficiency.

Suddenly, three more rebels armed with crude iron swords and hunting spears leap out from a nearby thicket, charging wildly toward a young peasant conscript wearing heavy plate armor.

"Cover!" Aldo barks, pointing his blade toward the flank. "Four conscripts, cover his left! Form a wall!"

Four conscripts step up in unison, their heavy iron shoulder plates clacking together as they form a tight defensive line, thrusting the tips of their long pikes forward to keep the attackers at bay.

SNAP-CRACK!

From thirty yards deeper in the woods, another rebel emerges from behind a thick pine trunk. He raises an old matchlock musket, the glowing match-cord sputtering in the damp air, and pulls the trigger. A cloud of thick grey gunpowder smoke blossoms into the night air. But because of the wide distance and the drifting fog, the lead ball whistles harmlessly through the branches high above their heads, snapping off a small pine bough.

Aldo's eyes lock onto the matchlock shooter instantly. With blinding speed, Aldo draws his secondary flintlock pistol from his belt, brings the barrel up in a single fluid motion, aligning the iron sights with the shadow behind the pine tree, and pulls the trigger.

BANG!

A flash of fire erupts from Aldo's pistol. But the damp air affects the powder charge—the lead ball strays an inch to the left, thumping heavily into the pine trunk, throwing up a shower of damp bark.

Through the clearing smoke, Aldo and the rebel shooter exchange a long, tense glance. Neither man speaks. In a split second of mutual understanding, realizing their positions are completely compromised and their weapons are empty, both men instantly step backward, vanishing into the thick shadows of the trees to avoid revealing their exact firing lines.

Meanwhile, Comtois is a whirlwind of chaotic, aggressive violence. Wielding his heavy broadsword in one hand and a captured iron spear in the other, he charges headlong into a group of four rebel skirmishers hiding in the high ferns.

"Hero! Come and destroy the demon minions!" Comtois bellows at the top of his lungs, his voice echoing wildly off the rock walls.

He swings the long spear in a wild, sweeping arc, the iron blade whistling through the damp air.

SLASH! CRUNCH!

The heavy blade cuts through leather coats and wooden spear shafts alike, inflicting shallow, bloody gashes across the chests and arms of the attackers. One rebel, attempting to dive back into the bushes to escape Comtois' wild assault, gets caught in the rear. The tip of Comtois' spear strikes him squarely in the left buttock.

"ARRGH! GODS ABOVE!" the man howls in agony, clutching his rear as he stumbles out of the bushes on all fours, groaning and cursing as he wriggles across the muddy trail.

Aldo, crouching behind a mossy granite boulder, catches a faint, fast-moving shadow out of the corner of his eye. His combat instincts react before his brain can even process the threat. He spins on his heel, diving behind the thick trunk of an ancient oak tree.

THWACK! THWACK! THWACK!

Three hunting arrows slam into Aldo's iron shoulder plate in rapid succession. But because he turned his body at a sharp angle just in time, the iron arrowheads strike the curved plate obliquely, deflecting off the slick metal with a series of sharp, metallic pings and vanishing harmlessly into the damp leaf litter below.

Watkins, watching the chaotic skirmish from the cave entrance while leaning heavily against a wooden support post, sees the rebels attempting to flank Aldo's position.

"Warmages! Cover the forward line!" Watkins shouts, waving his uninjured arm.

Two robed Warmages rush forward from the cave mouth, their boots splashing through the muddy puddles. They raise their wooden staves in unison, chanting a short, powerful incantation.

FLASH!

A blinding, brilliant burst of white magical light erupts from the tips of their staves, illuminating the pitch-black woods for two full seconds like a flash of midday lightning.

That single brief flash is all Aldo needs. His sharp, analytical eyes sweep the illuminated treeline, instantly memorizing the exact positions, weapon types, and spacing of eight rebel skirmishers crouching behind the surrounding trees and rocks.

The moment the flash dies down and darkness reclaims the woods, Aldo acts with terrifying, calculated precision.

"Counterattack!" Aldo roars, his voice ringing out with absolute authority. "Push them back! Fire on my mark!"

Aldo leaps out from behind the oak, firing his freshly reloaded flintlock straight into a shadow three paces to the right. A hit—a rebel groans and drops his weapon. Aldo's squad surges forward behind him, opening up a disciplined, continuous volley of flintlock fire into the dark woods. The peasant conscripts, emboldened by the steel plates on their chests and the overwhelming firepower of the squad, push forward in a tight line, thrusting their pikes and driving the skirmishers backward.

As the smoke settles, Onaga drags a captured rebel out from the thicket by his collar. The man is disarmed, bleeding from a shallow cut on his forehead, his hands tied tightly behind his back.

Aldo walks over, reaching down to pull open the man's torn leather coat. Hidden beneath the rough lining is a woven wool patch depicting a stylized wolf head over a broken crown—the exact emblem of Volkov's rebel faction.

Aldo looks up, his eyes locking onto Comtois and Watkins. "These aren't local bandits. They're Volkov's men."

Comtois shuddered violently upon hearing the name, a cold drop of sweat rolling down his dirty cheek. He looks at the captured rebel, then turns his head away, rubbing his forehead with a trembling hand.

"Gods... I shouldn't have reported it," Comtois mutters under his breath, his voice laced with sudden dread. "I shouldn't have asked..."

By this time, the surviving rebels have broken contact. They fall back through the dark trees, but as Aldo watches them retreat, his brow knits together into a tight, suspicious frown. They are not routing in panic; they are retreating at a surprisingly slow, leisurely pace, keeping a steady distance while moving in a single, organized direction toward the north ridge.

Two young conscripts, fired up by the successful defense, raise their muskets and start to charge after them.

"Hold your ground!" Aldo shouts sharply, stepping in front of the conscripts and grabbing one by his shoulder plate. "Do not pursue! Stay in formation!"

The two Warmages step up beside Aldo, their staves glowing faintly as they look down the dark trail.

"Why are we stopping?" one Warmage urges impatiently. "They're falling apart! We should chase them down and wipe them out before they can regroup!"

Aldo turns his head, giving the Warmage a cold, sharp look. "They are retreating too slowly. They aren't running for their lives; they are pulling us along. Look at their path—they are heading in one specific direction, leading straight toward a bottleneck."

The two Warmages frown, but one of them raises his staff again, chanting a quick diagnostic spell to scan the distant ridge. A faint wave of blue light sweeps out across the mountain slope.

A second later, the Warmage's face goes completely pale, his eyes wide with shock. He lowers his staff, his hand shaking.

"Several... several companies are moving on the northern ridge," the Warmage stammers, looking at Aldo. "They aren't a scouting party. There's a massive force gathering just beyond the trees!"

Hano steps up, his voice tight with anxiety as he looks at Onaga. "Is that our reinforcement coming from our side? Did the Regiment move faster than expected?"

Onaga shakes his head slowly, his voice flat and grave. "No. The Captain said the Regiment won't arrive for another three days. Those companies aren't ours."

Aldo turns back toward the cave, his decision made instantly. "Retreat to the main camp. Now. We report to Watkins that several rebel companies are operating within two leagues of this position."
