Chapter 114 - Sexuality and Rationality (Part 15 - The Duchess Gave Him a Silk Favor, So He Asked For Her Homeland's Agricultural Infrastructure)

Aldo remains completely speechless. His smooth, unblemished skin offers no hint of his thoughts, but the dead-fish look in his eyes undergoes a subtle, frantic shift. He feels completely paralyzed, a profound shyness locking his limbs as the powerful presence of the Duchess completely dominates this private, elevated space.

Maeve lets her gaze slide down from his eyes, her focus lingering on his rosy, well-care-for lips for one long, silent second before snapping back to his eyes. A soft, remarkably genuine smile graces her face, devoid of any political malice.

"You stood there completely frozen when I greeted you on the floor," she says softly, her voice carrying a hint of playful warmth. "Was it my grand title that stole your breath away, or the woman bearing it? Because out here, beneath the stars, I am not a Duchess, and you are not a slave. We are simply two forces of nature. And I think we could do magnificent things together, you and I."

Aldo's throat bobs violently as he swallows hard. His eyes widen by a fraction of an inch, his internal defense mechanisms completely shattering under the sheer, unyielding proximity of her physical presence.

[The distance is less than four inches. Her structural alignment is optimal. I... I have no calculated response for this parameter.]

Maeve takes one more slow, deliberate step forward, completely eliminating the final boundary of his personal space. The heavy, dark blue silk of her sweeping skirts brushes directly against his polished leather boots, the fabric collapsing around his ankles.

She places her left hand flat against his chest—positioning it right over his heart. Beneath the layers of fine red silk, she can feel his chest cavity vibrating, his heart hammering against his ribs with a wild, frantic velocity like a trapped bird desperate for escape. She doesn't flinch or draw back; instead, her smile softens with a dangerous, triumphant warmth that spreads across her beautiful features.

With her other hand, her gloved fingers gently rise, tracing the smooth, scarless line of his young jawline with an feather-light touch, applying just enough pressure to force him to keep his dead-fish gaze locked directly into hers.

Down below, the whispers of the court reach a fever pitch, the visual dynamic of the balcony sending the nobility into a frenzy of speculation.

"Look at you~" Maeve whispers, her eyes shining with a deep, magnetic intensity. "A literal lion on the field of battle, yet your heart beats as if you're facing a firing squad. Am I truly that terrifying, Commander? Or is it simply that no one has dared to touch you like a living man, rather than a cold weapon, in a very long time?"

She leans in even closer, her lips hovering mere inches from his earlobe. Aldo's senses are instantly overwhelmed; he can smell the heavy, intoxicating scent of her perfume—something incredibly expensive, rare, and dark, evoking the scent of old amber and crushed winter roses. Her breath is remarkably warm against his skin, contrasting sharply with the cool afternoon breeze.

"The Palanton will ask you to do terrible things in the coming months, Aldo," she murmurs, her voice turning grave and protective. "He will point your sharp swords at peaceful provinces that do not deserve your wrath. He will try to break my house through trade embargoes, just as he currently tries to wear your spirit down to the bone. When that day comes, I want you to remember this exact moment. Remember who saw the young man beneath the heavy armor."

She slowly, reluctantly draws her hand away from his chest, letting her fingertips linger over his racing heart for one final, heavy beat. She steps back, the cool night air instantly rushing into the empty space between them, leaving Aldo feeling suddenly cold, exposed, and thoroughly disarmed.

She reaches down to her left wrist, untying a small, premium silk favor—a deep blue ribbon beautifully embroidered with the silver crest of the House of Wintersong. She reaches out, pressing the smooth ribbon directly into his palm, then folds his fingers over the fabric with her own hands, securing his grip.

"Find your tongue by tomorrow morning, Commander," she says, a parting challenge flashing in her eyes. "I fully expect you to visit my carriage before my entourage departs the gates of the city. Until then... do try to enjoy our host's absolutely terrible wine."

With a final, lingering look that promises everything while guaranteeing nothing, she turns sharply on her heel. Her heavy silk gown rustles loudly like a warning across the stone floor as she glides gracefully back toward the bright, glittering lights of the grand ballroom.

The sight that follows completely alters the entire flavor of the evening. Aldo, the formidable, blood-tested Commander of the Palantine Central Army, stands alone on the balcony, his fair skin turning a bright, unmistakable, and glowing crimson that spreads from his neck to the tips of his ears under his red suit. His shield is entirely gone.

With a sudden, clumsy motion, he stutters out a fragmented apology, raising a hesitant, trembling hand into the air to stay her departure.

"W-wait... Duchess," Aldo blurs out, his voice cracking slightly as he forces his lips to move. "Your... your realm. Tell me more of your... lovely realm."

He isn't playing a strategic game of thrones; he is simply a young man who has been genuinely struck straight to the heart by the proximity of a woman.

Seeing him blush so intensely and stutter over his words doesn't make Maeve lose a single ounce of respect for him. Rather, a look of profound delight washes over her face. His clumsy, unpolished sincerity proves to her that his heart is entirely hers, untouched by the corruption of the court. She stops her departure, turning back around with a slow, sweeping motion, a genuine, brilliant smile breaking across her face that lacks any of her previous political malice.

She steps right back into his personal space, the blue velvet swirling around his boots once more. When he raises his hand nervously, she doesn't let it hang awkwardly in the cool air; she reaches out, catching his teenage fingers with her own silk glove, giving his hand a reassuring, remarkably gentle squeeze. Standing eye-to-eye, she absorbs his deep blush with an expression of pure, fond amusement.

"There is absolutely no need to apologize for your silence, Commander," she says softly, her voice completely genuine. "Sincerity is an exceptionally rare currency in this palace; I find it far more refreshing than a thousand practiced speeches from old lords."

She leans in a fraction closer, her eyes glittering like stars under the chandeliers as she begins to paint a vivid picture of her homeland, matching his earnestness but keeping her unmistakable seductive edge.

"You wish to see my lands?" she asks, her voice dropping into a rhythmic murmur. "You must hold yourself to that promise, Aldo. My duchy is nothing like the host Duke's dreary stone fortresses and damp armories. We sit precisely where the great northern rivers meet—our waters are teeming with life, and our markets bustle with trade from dawn until dusk. But it is our grand orchards you must see with your own eyes. In the spring, the apple and cherry blossoms catch the crisp northern breeze, and the entire air smells sweeter than any perfume in this crowded ballroom."

She gently pats his trembling hand one last time before finally letting go, stepping back toward the exit while leaving him with a final, captivating challenge.

"When you find your free time, Commander, ride directly north to my gates," she smiles. "I shall personally ensure a magnificent feast of our finest cider and fresh catch awaits your arrival. Do not keep me waiting too long."

The elevated balcony remains perfectly visible to the hundreds of nobles watching from the ballroom floor below. While the distance ensured the court couldn't hear a single one of his stuttered, clumsy words, they absolutely saw the legendary young Commander turn bright red. They saw him raise his hand to desperately stop her from leaving, and they saw the Duchess smile with unmatched warmth while tenderly holding his hand in plain view of the realm.

Duke Ferris's face instantly turns as white as a fresh sheet of parchment, his breath catching in his throat. A cold dread settles over his spine. If the Royal Central Army aligns its military might with his immediate northern neighbor, the Duchess could easily command the vanguard to protect her trade routes, or worse, utilize her massive river systems to completely bottleneck his commercial shipping lanes.

His fingers tremble as he immediately signals his top advisors with a frantic jerk of his head, ordering them to draft a highly generous trade concession to offer the Duchess before the night ends, desperate to keep her happy.

"Jean," Ferris hissed, his teeth clenched so hard his jaw visibly shook, his eyes locked on the stone balcony. "She's got her hand flat against his chest. The boy looks like he's about to faint, and she's smiling like she just inherited the central armory."

The butler stepped smoothly into the Duke's blind spot, adjusting his cuffs with practiced, maddening indifference. "A standard northern maneuver, my lord. The Duchess has always preferred an aggressive opening allocation. Shall I prepare the carriage for an early departure?"

"Departure? Are you mad?" Ferris's voice dropped into a frantic, strangled whisper. "If I leave this hall without signing a concession, she'll bottleneck the delta ports before sunrise. Bring me the advisors. We are going to bleed our own treasury tonight, Jean, because the alternative is letting that red-suited little peasant dictate my border taxes."

"Understood, Your Grace," Jean murmured, casting one final, clinical look toward the blushing Commander. "I shall ensure the ink is dry before the Duchess descends."

The older lords near the pillars scoff loudly, turning their backs while pretending to be deeply disgusted by such an egregious breach of traditional decorum. They cluster tightly together, their heavy velvets rustling like dry leaves as they attempt to construct a wall of collective denial against the shifting political tides.

"Disgraceful," one senior aristocrat mutters, his voice dripping with venomous disdain as he swirls the dark vintage in his glass. "A daughter of an ancestral house, practically begging for the favor of a common vanguard soldier. The realm has lost its bearings entirely if this is what passes for courtly conduct."

"It is an absolute mockery of our traditions," a nearby noblewoman responds, her heavy silk fan snapping shut with a sharp, synchronized crack that echoes against the stone pillar. "To display such brazen familiarity in the open light of day... she demeans her entire lineage simply to flaunt a weapon she has no right to wield. The Crown should have kept that boy in iron chains, not dressed him in premium silks to be paraded like a prize horse."

However, the younger lords and ladies in the center of the floor are absolutely green with envy, their youthful faces illuminated by the warm candlelight but twisted with a mixture of intense shock and recalculation. For them, the illusion of the stoic, unapproachable battlefield demon has thoroughly shattered, replaced by a much more tantalizing reality.

"Look at him," a young lady whispers furiously to her companion, her eyes wide as she tracks the vivid crimson flush creeping up Aldo's neck. "They told us he was a monster. They said he was made of ice and iron, completely immune to the pleasantries of the court. Yet she disarmed him with a single smile and a bit of blue lace. He isn't unreachable at all."

"She has completely bypassed the entire courtly queue," her friend replies, her fingers tightening around her champagne flute. "If a simple touch can make the formidable Commander freeze like a schoolboy, then the western trade sectors are wide open. We have been trying to approach him through formal military channels for months, and she simply walks up and takes his arm."

Meanwhile, the young heirs and lesser lords stare upward with a hollow, sinking feeling in their chests, their minds racing through the grim geopolitical math. They do not see a romantic tryst; they see a devastating tactical disaster.

"She just secured the ultimate, invincible vanguard for her borders," a young lord murmurs, his knuckles whitening against his sword hilt. "With Aldo's legions anchoring her northern rivers, no one will dare challenge her shipping tariffs. She didn't just charm a boy tonight; she effectively redrew the entire military map of the principality while we stood here drinking wine."

Officer Watkins calmly sips his wine in the corner, shaking his head in utter disbelief as he watches the scene unfold on the balcony. He stares at Aldo's blushing face, his mind completely boggled by the boy's choices.

"Of all the parameters to ask a beautiful woman about," Watkins mutters to himself, rolling his eyes as he puts down his glass. "He asks about her regional geography? Not what she likes, not the music she listens to, or the luxurious gifts she wants? The boy is an absolute, unmitigated idiot."

Down near the banquet tables, Comtois had been standing on his tiops, squinting his eyes as he carefully read their lips to identify the words crossing the balcony. His goofy face twists into a deep, profound frown as he turns to Hano.

"Why the hell is Aldo asking about the Duchess's regional geography?" Comtois asks, his voice full of genuine confusion. "Is Aldo's first instinct when a stunning woman approaches him to ask about the soil layout and river systems of her territory? Is that his version of flirting?"

Hano grabs Comtois's gray sleeve, pulling out a small leather notebook and a charcoal pencil with a look of frantic urgency.

"Shut up and recount exactly what Maeve Wintersong told him!" Hano urges, poking Comtois's solid chest. "Tell me the names of the rivers and the orchard layouts so I can take notes for the strategy map! Hurry!"

Comtois throws his large hands up in the air, spinning around to evade the question as he lets out an exasperated groan.

"Oh no, oh no! La La La !" Comtois cries out dramatically, waving his arms. "Aldo told us to go scouting the geography ourselves! I'm not doing his homework for him!"

Hano grabs Comtois by the shoulders, shaking the larger boy with hyperactive force, his energetic eyes flashing.

"Stop acting like a clown and tell me what happened up there first!" Hano yells under his breath.

A moment later, the balcony door creaks open. Aldo walks back into the shadow of the pillar, his red suit slightly rumpled, his fair skin still carrying a faint pink hue. Without a word, he slides down his back until he is sitting flat on the polished marble floor, the blue silk ribbon clutched tightly in his fist. He looks up at his two companions, the dead-fish look returning to his eyes as he lets out a rare, heavy sigh of self-reproach.

"The fault lies entirely with my own technical parameters," Aldo murmurs flatly, staring at his boots as the scent of amber and crushed roses lingers on his collar. "I have terrible communication skills."
