Chapter 24 - Chapter 24; Something About Her Changed (Nathan’s Pov)

There's a silence that feels heavier than noise.

That's the kind of silence Elena has been giving me.

It started small — late replies, dry messages, laughter that didn't sound real.

At first, I thought she was just tired or busy with school.

But lately… it's like she's living in a world I no longer have access to.

We don't even attend the same school, yet I could feel the distance growing miles wider — even through a screen.

Her "I'm fine" messages feel rehearsed.

Her voice notes sound like someone forcing brightness through exhaustion.

And sometimes she goes completely quiet, like she's afraid her truth might slip out if she talks too long.

I can't explain it, but something about her has changed.

Last week, she sent a selfie — beautiful as always — but her eyes looked tired, red.

When I asked, she said, "It's just stress."

I wanted to believe her, but deep down, I knew there was more to it.

She doesn't open up easily, even when it hurts her.

That's one thing I've learned about Elena — she'll rather break quietly than admit she's breaking.

I thought maybe Chioma, her best friend, could help me understand.

But when I tried to reach out, she barely said a word.

"She's going through something," Chioma whispered. "But Nathan, she'll be fine."

That was all. No explanation. Just silence.

And then, even Chioma stopped reaching out to her too.

From that moment, Elena was truly alone — not because no one cared, but because no one knew how to reach her anymore.

I don't know what happened between them.

All I know is, Elena has been quieter than ever.

Sometimes, she still texts me late at night.

Just a "Hey."

Or "Are you awake?"

We talk about random things — her coursework, music, how she misses homemade meals.

She never talks about how she feels.

But her pauses say enough.

Her dots… her half-typed messages she never sends.

They scream what her voice refuses to say.

And then today, she texted something unexpected.

"I'll be spending my holiday at your place."

I blinked at the message for almost a minute.

My fingers froze.

I wasn't sure how to respond — surprise, relief, fear, everything hit at once.

It's not that I didn't want her here.

It's that I could tell… something inside her was running away from something else.

Maybe she thought a change of space would make her forget.

Maybe she just needed peace.

Or maybe — maybe she still saw that peace in me.

I stared at her message again, and all I could type was:

"You know you're always welcome, Elena."

Because even if I didn't understand what she was going through,

I knew what it felt like to need somewhere safe —

somewhere quiet enough to think,

and warm enough to heal.

So maybe that's what I'll be for her now.

A safe place.

Even if she never tells me what really happened.

And maybe… just maybe…

when she walks through my door this holiday,

I'll finally see the truth her silence has been trying to hide.
