Chapter 946 - Farewells

Dawn in the Fish-Men Kingdom did not bring the traditional awakening of the sun, but rather a subtle change in the tone of the great bioluminescent dome that covered the underwater capital. The deep bluish tones of night gave way to a diffuse golden glow, filtered through the layers of saltwater that covered the crystal ceiling of the submerged continent. It was the visual sign that our journey in that refuge had come to an end.

The outer gates of the official residence had been open since before dawn. The polished limestone courtyard, which had previously served as an arena for our exhausting mana control training, now housed the departure convoy. Crates of medical supplies, rare healing coral seedlings, and compacted bundles of nutrient-rich algae were organized on large hydrodynamic sleds, ready to be pulled by the marine riding creatures that the royal palace had provided for our escort to the coastline.

The residents of the neighboring villages began gathering along the main path of the hill during the first hours of the day. Fish-men, fish-women, and fish-children formed a silent human corridor, watching our movements with reverence. There was none of the chaotic noise of the colonial markets on the surface; the respect of those people manifested itself in absolute silence and the rhythmic motion of their open hands against their chests, the traditional sign of deep loyalty and gratitude.

Taran and the members of the council of elders waited at the base of the main staircase, holding the ritual leadership staffs that now carried the runic seal of the property we had stabilized. I approached the elder, closely accompanied by my companions, who were already wearing their complete travel and combat outfits, stripped of the lightness of the days of rest and focused on the military reality that awaited us on the continent.

"Everything is ready for the definitive transition, Lord Takumi," Taran declared, his aged voice echoing clearly through the humid air of the valley. "The patrol teams have taken over the posts created by Lady Scarlett and Lady Vespera, and the irrigation channels of Sector Beta are operating at the exact flow that Lady Liriel designed. We will take care of this place with the same dedication you demonstrated when you got dirty in the mud alongside us."

I extended my hand and firmly grasped Taran's arm, a gesture that made the old administrator straighten his posture with obvious pride. "I entrust you with the future of these lands, Taran. What you produce here will not only serve to enrich the capital, but to support the field hospitals defending the entire world against the darkness. You are just as fundamental to victory as the soldiers wielding swords in the northern trenches."

Elara stepped forward, handing the council the final contingency logistics map, in case the tidal flows suffered severe climatic changes in the following months. "The crop rotation schedule is protected against fluctuations, Taran. Follow the pages strictly and the land will never become sterile."

Liriel said goodbye to the resident mage with a polite wave of her runic staff, while her assistant stored the leather journal in her backpack with an expression mixed with melancholy and readiness. The young assistant looked one last time at the healing plant nurseries in the valley, knowing that the practical knowledge accumulated there would change the course of her studies forever.

At the front of the convoy, Lyannis and Rai'kanna had already checked the bindings of the cargo sleds. Rai'kanna caressed the thick shell of one of the riding beasts, testing the weight of the hydrostatic brakes with her usual strength. "The animals are calm and the supplies are well sealed against infiltration, Takumi. We can begin the march as soon as you give the order."

Scarlett and Vespera positioned themselves on the sides of the group, their attentive eyes sweeping across the crowd of residents. Although the atmosphere was one of peace and gratitude, their military discipline did not allow any relaxation before we crossed the safe boundaries of the kingdom's jurisdiction.

The march began beneath a silent rain of small sea-flower petals that the children threw from the hillsides. We walked slowly through the corridor of residents, returning the waves and respectful gazes that finally consolidated our position as the legitimate protectors of that province. The descent to the valley and the crossing through the peripheral avenues of the capital served as a living reminder that we had created an indestructible bastion beneath the ocean, a home that would be waiting for us when the storm of war finally passed.

The King of the Fish-Men awaited our group at the hydrostatic compression gates that marked the boundary between the safety of the royal dome and the wild immensity of the open ocean. The monarch wore his scaled battle armor, surrounded by his personal elite guard of spearmen.

"The seas will remain clean and guarded under my command, hero Takumi," declared the King, extending his hand for a final handshake that symbolized the unbreakable pact between our races. "The first fleets of medical supplies will depart shortly after you, using the hidden northern currents to accelerate delivery to the ports of the Human Kingdom. Go with the certainty that your back is protected by the weight of the entire ocean."

I thanked him for the strategic partnership with a firm bow, signaling Liriel to activate the individual pressurization enchantment that would allow us to cross the mass of water toward the surface. The great mother-of-pearl and metal gates began to open slowly with a muffled mechanical noise, allowing the dark-blue immensity of the open sea to fill the crystal viewport of the portal.

Moving through the depths back toward the continental coastline was a completely different experience from our journey there. The intense training and adaptation to the mana of the depths had left our bodies light and responsive; the flow of water that had once seemed like a heavy obstacle now functioned like a rough carpet that propelled our steps with surgical speed. The convoy advanced in a perfect line, cutting through the wild reefs and navigating around the dark trenches without any sign of physical exhaustion.

The underwater landscapes unfolded before our eyes in one final dance of exotic shapes and colors. Schools of lanternfish crossed the cold currents like underwater shooting stars, and the immense forests of giant algae moved rhythmically around us, as if bidding farewell to the group that had restored the mystical balance to their region.

After hours of constant progression, the dark tone of the ocean began to brighten, transforming into a brilliant aqua-green as we approached the shallow coastal waters. The sandy terrain rose gradually, and the first rays of real sunlight began piercing the liquid surface, drawing lines of golden light that danced across our armor.

We broke through the surface of the water at the deserted beach of the Human Kingdom as if awakening from a long mystical dream. The warmth of the continental sun immediately struck our faces, and the familiar sound of waves breaking against the fine sand replaced the muffled silence of the depths. We removed the oxygen containment hoods, breathing the pure air of the mainland with a renewed sense of strategic focus.

I looked back, observing the horizon where the sea stretched until it disappeared from sight. The Fish-Men Kingdom Arc was formally consolidated; we had transformed the land, secured the healing resources, trained our bodies to their practical limits, and earned the definitive respect of an entire people.

I walked toward the dirt path that led to our mansion in the human capital, with my companions lined up directly behind me, ready to unload the supplies and reassume control of the Council's military operations. The calm of the ocean was behind us; the decisive phase of the war against the Demon King awaited us on the surface.
