The second day of battle began before sunrise.
I opened my eyes inside the tent and, for a few seconds, remained staring at the fabric ceiling gently swaying with the morning breeze. My body was still exhausted from the previous day's battle. Even after a few hours of rest, my muscles still felt heavy.
War was different from any mission.
In a normal mission, combat started and ended relatively quickly. Here, it didn't.
Here, combat only ended so it could begin again the next day.
I slowly got to my feet and put on my armor.
Outside the tent, the camp was already awake.
Soldiers carried supply crates.
Healers organized medicines.
Blacksmiths repaired weapons damaged during the previous day's fighting.
Adventurers walked back and forth while checking their equipment.
The atmosphere was serious.
No one was relaxed.
Everyone knew the demons would return.
And they would return in greater numbers.
As I walked through the camp, I found the girls gathered near a campfire.
Scarlett was sitting with her arms crossed.
Vespera was checking her arrows.
Liriel was preparing several magical scrolls.
Lyannis was studying maps.
Rai'kanna was finishing the adjustments on her armor.
Elara was watching the horizon.
When I approached, Rai'kanna was the first to speak.
"Did you get at least some sleep?"
"More or less."
Scarlett gave a small smile.
"That means you barely slept."
"Maybe."
"You need to rest."
"I'll rest after this war is over."
She shook her head.
"You always say that."
Before I could answer, Lyannis pointed toward the horizon.
"Movement."
Everyone immediately looked.
In the distance, a huge cloud of dust was rising.
My expression became serious.
"They're coming."
A few minutes later, the alarms echoed throughout the camp.
The soldiers rushed to their positions.
The adventurers grabbed their weapons.
Commanders shouted orders.
Within minutes, the entire allied army was ready to receive the attack.
I climbed onto a small rise in the terrain to get a better view.
Soon I could see the enemy.
And this time, something seemed different.
Very different.
Among the demonic ranks were gigantic creatures.
They were enormous monsters.
Some were nearly ten meters tall.
Others carried massive stone clubs.
Some had bodies covered in black plates resembling natural armor.
The moment I saw them, I immediately understood.
The demons were changing their strategy.
Yesterday they had tried to win through numbers.
Today they would try to win through brute force.
"So they've decided to bring giant monsters."
Scarlett watched the enemy.
"This is going to be fun."
"You call this fun?"
"Yes."
"You're really strange."
She smiled.
Shortly afterward, the sound of war horns echoed across the battlefield.
The battle began.
The demonic line advanced like a massive black wave.
Thousands of creatures charged toward us.
Behind them came the giant monsters.
I drew my sword.
"Everyone, take your positions."
The girls nodded.
I rushed forward alongside dozens of adventurers.
The collision between the two armies came moments later.
The battlefield exploded into chaos.
Swords clashed.
Magic crossed the sky.
Cries echoed everywhere.
I charged straight toward a group of demons trying to break through the main line.
My sword pierced the first one.
Then the second.
Then the third.
I kept advancing without stopping.
Around me, many adventurers did the same.
But soon the giant monsters arrived.
One of them raised an enormous club and hurled it toward a group of soldiers.
The weapon smashed into the ground.
The explosion of earth threw several men backward.
I saw some wounded.
Others couldn't even get back up.
"Damn it."
Before the monster could attack again, Rai'kanna appeared.
She leaped several meters into the air.
Her axe came crashing down with tremendous force.
The blow struck the creature's arm.
The giant roared.
But it didn't fall.
It was far too durable.
"Takumi!"
I immediately ran toward it.
I channeled mana into my sword.
Then I attacked.
A massive wave of golden energy swept across the battlefield.
The strike hit the giant in the chest.
The creature staggered.
Rai'kanna seized the opening.
Her second blow finally brought the monster down.
The gigantic body crashed to the ground with a thunderous impact.
But that was only the beginning.
More monsters kept advancing.
Many more.
Vespera appeared atop an elevated position.
Her bow shone intensely.
A barrage of magical arrows crossed the sky.
Every shot struck the giants' vital points.
Eyes.
Necks.
Joints.
She was preventing them from advancing freely.
Meanwhile, Scarlett unleashed her magic without any restraint.
Columns of fire erupted across the battlefield.
Lightning struck entire groups of demons.
Wherever she passed, only craters remained.
Even so, the number of enemies remained enormous.
The battle dragged on for hours.
The sun slowly climbed higher.
The heat intensified.
So did the exhaustion.
At one point, I heard screams coming from the left side of the formation.
I looked in that direction.
One of the giant monsters had partially broken through the defensive line.
Several soldiers were trapped.
The creature prepared an attack that would certainly kill dozens of them.
I ran to help.
But I was too far away.
I wouldn't make it in time.
That was when Elara acted.
She raised her staff.
The wind around her began to swirl.
Slowly at first.
Then faster and faster.
Within seconds, a massive tornado formed on the battlefield.
The soldiers retreated in shock.
Even I was impressed.
Elara pointed at the giant.
The mass of wind surged forward.
The monster tried to resist.
It tried to hold its ground.
But the force was overwhelming.
It was ripped off the ground.
Its gigantic body spun violently through the air.
Seconds later, it was hurled away.
The creature flew dozens of meters before crashing into a demonic formation.
The explosion sent dust flying everywhere.
The soldiers who had been about to die remained alive.
Elara took a deep breath.
The effort had clearly consumed a tremendous amount of mana.
When I approached her, she smiled.
"Did I make it in time?"
"You did."
"Good."
The nearby soldiers began thanking her.
She looked a little embarrassed.
"I only did what had to be done."
But the truth was simple.
If it hadn't been for her, many would have died.
The battle continued.
Throughout the afternoon, the demons relentlessly pushed forward.
But this time, we were prepared.
The defensive lines held firm.
The adventurers fought side by side with the soldiers.
The girls provided constant support.
Little by little, we began gaining ground.
The giants fell one after another.
The demonic troops started losing their organization.
Then I noticed something important.
They were hesitating.
"They're retreating."
Lyannis came to my side.
"I noticed it too."
"They're losing momentum."
"If we press now, we can force them back."
I nodded.
I raised my sword.
"Advance!"
The order echoed across the battlefield.
The soldiers and adventurers responded immediately.
The offensive began.
For the first time that day, the demons were forced to retreat.
The black line began to collapse.
Creatures fled.
Commanders tried to reorganize their troops.
But it was already too late.
That day's victory had been decided.
As the sun began sinking toward the horizon, the last demonic groups finally abandoned the battlefield.
Silence slowly began to return.
Gradually.
After hours of relentless combat.
I lowered my sword.
My entire body ached.
But I was still standing.
Around me, the soldiers celebrated.
Some shouted.
Others simply collapsed onto the ground, exhausted.
The girls approached shortly afterward.
Scarlett looked tired.
Vespera had used most of her special arrows.
Liriel was helping the healers.
Rai'kanna's armor was covered with marks from battle.
Elara looked completely drained after using so much magic.
Lyannis continued organizing the support teams.
I looked at each of them for a few seconds.
Even exhausted, they kept fighting.
They kept advancing.
They kept believing.
That gave me strength.
I looked north.
Beyond the mountains.
Beyond the enemy lines.
Somewhere far away, Vaelthor was watching everything.
The First General certainly already knew his monsters had failed.
And he was probably preparing something even worse.
But at that moment, none of that mattered.
Because we had won another day.
And in war, every day gained had value.
The sun slowly disappeared behind the horizon.
As darkness once again covered the battlefield, one certainty remained in my mind.
The war was far from over.
But on that second day, victory belonged to the allied forces.
And we would keep moving forward.
