Chapter 565 - The Choice

Morning arrived unhurried, but no one in the mansion had a truly restful night. The silence that remained after the previous day's conversation wasn't empty—it was heavy. Everyone respected Rai'kanna's space, but the presence of the pending decision was felt by all.

When I went down to the main hall, I found Scarlett already awake, sitting near the window. She wasn't reading or organizing anything—just watching outside.

"You didn't sleep well either," I commented.

"Not much," she replied, without taking her eyes off the window. "Neither did she."

I nodded slightly.

"Are you going to talk to her?"

"I am."

I went back upstairs, this time with more direct steps. There was no more room to let time resolve things on its own. Some decisions require silence, but they also require an end.

I stopped in front of her door and knocked twice.

"Come in."

Her voice came clearer than the day before.

I opened the door.

Rai'kanna was sitting at the table, the scroll open in front of her once again. But now there was no hesitation in her eyes. There was focus.

"You're still with that," I said.

"Not anymore," she replied.

I stepped in and closed the door.

"You've decided."

"Yes."

She stood up, picking up the scroll calmly. Her movements were firmer now, more defined.

"I read it several times," she said. "Not because I needed to understand… but because I needed to fully accept it."

I moved a little closer.

"And now?"

She took a deep breath but didn't look away.

"I'm staying."

The answer came directly.

Without weight in her voice.

Without doubt.

Just decision.

I didn't respond immediately.

I observed.

Because this time… it was different.

It wasn't someone trying to convince themselves.

It was someone who had already resolved things internally.

"The king's request wasn't a suggestion," she continued. "It was an assessment."

"Yes."

"He knows what's happening better than anyone out there. If he told me to stay… then there's a bigger reason."

"There is."

She nodded.

"If I go back now, I'll fight. I'll protect, I'll help… but I'll be reacting."

Her eyes grew firmer.

"Here… I can act beforehand."

I remained silent.

Because that didn't need a response.

It was exactly the kind of thinking that separates impulse from strategy.

Rai'kanna walked to the window, looking outside for a moment.

"That doesn't mean it's easy."

"I know."

"My people are there."

"I know."

She closed her eyes for a second.

"But I wasn't left aside."

"No."

"I was placed here."

"Yes."

She opened her eyes again, now without any wavering.

"Then I'll see this through to the end."

A brief silence formed.

But this time…

Without weight.

"Have you sent a response?" I asked.

"Not yet."

"You'll send it now."

"Yes."

She folded the scroll carefully, as if that gesture closed something.

And it did.

"Thank you," she said suddenly.

I frowned slightly. "For what?"

"For not trying to decide for me."

"That's not my role."

"Even so… it helped."

I nodded slightly.

"You already knew the answer."

"I did," she replied. "I just needed to face it without looking away."

She walked past me toward the door.

"Let's go."

We went downstairs together to the main hall. As soon as we entered, everyone turned their attention to us.

Scarlett was the first to stand.

"So?"

Rai'kanna stopped at the center of the room.

There was no pause.

No hesitation.

"I'm staying."

The silence that followed was brief, but intense.

Liriel was the first to react. "So you really decided."

"Yes."

Lyannis tilted her head slightly. "No regrets?"

"No regrets," Rai'kanna replied.

Elara crossed her arms, analyzing her for a moment before nodding. "Good choice."

Vespera added, "Strategic."

Scarlett stepped a little closer.

"Are you sure?"

Rai'kanna looked directly at her.

"I am."

Scarlett held her gaze for a few seconds… and then gave a faint smile.

"Then it's right."

The atmosphere shifted at that moment.

Not completely light.

But stabilized.

The uncertainty was gone.

And that made a difference.

"We'll need to send a response," Vespera said.

"Yes," Rai'kanna replied. "Now."

Lyannis stretched slightly. "Well… at least we won't have to deal with dramatic goodbyes."

Liriel shot her a look. "Is that all you think about?"

"Someone has to keep the environment functional."

Scarlett sighed, but without irritation.

"Either way… this changes our position."

"It does," I agreed.

Elara nodded. "Now we're officially involved in something bigger."

"We already were," Vespera said.

"But now with direct confirmation," Liriel added.

Rai'kanna remained silent for a moment, absorbing that.

"I'm not here just as part of the group," she said. "I'm here representing my kingdom as well."

"Then you carry two responsibilities," Scarlett commented.

"Yes."

I looked around.

"And neither of them is light."

No one disagreed.

Rai'kanna walked to the table and picked up paper and ink. Her movements were precise, without any remaining hesitation. She sat down and began to write.

The response was short.

Direct.

Without excessive emotion.

But firm.

When she finished, she folded the paper and sealed it.

"It's done."

Vespera took the document. "I'll send it."

She left the room without delay.

The rest of the group remained silent for a few seconds.

But now…

It was a different kind of silence.

Not of doubt.

But of preparation.

Scarlett looked at Rai'kanna once more.

"If it gets heavy… say something."

"It won't," she replied.

"It will," Lyannis said. "But you'll handle it."

Rai'kanna gave a faint, almost imperceptible smile.

"Yes."

I stepped a little closer.

"There's no turning back now."

"No," she replied.

"Then it's forward from here."

She nodded.

"To the end."

Outside, the wind began to intensify slightly, carrying with it a feeling that was no longer new.

But now…

It was clearer.

Because there was no more doubt.

The pieces were falling into place.

And the choice had been made.
