Chapter 558 - Village Defense

Dawn arrived without new attacks, but that didn't bring real relief. The village was standing, intact, but the feeling left from the previous night was not one of victory. It was confirmation. They had come, tested, advanced… and retreated without hesitation when they met resistance. That wasn't normal behavior.

I walked through the area where we intercepted the first group. The bodies were already being removed by the villagers, carefully and in silence. There was no celebration. Only a practical effort to clean up what remained.

"You did more in one night than we managed in days," said the older man who had received us. He still looked tired, but there was firmness in his voice now.

"It's not over," I replied.

He nodded, as if he already expected that.

"Will it get worse?"

"It will continue," I said. "And it will change."

He fell silent for a few seconds before going back to organizing the other villagers.

Behind me, I heard footsteps approaching. Scarlett stopped beside me, looking in the same direction.

"They didn't let anyone escape," she said.

"It wasn't necessary," I replied.

She frowned slightly. "That bothers me more than if they had escaped."

"Because it shows control," I completed.

She nodded slowly.

The rest of the group began gathering again near the center of the village. Liriel was more direct, as always.

"If they come back, they won't repeat the same mistake," she said.

"Probably not," I replied.

Elara crossed her arms. "They'll test another point. Another approach."

"Or another type of unit," Vespera added.

Lyannis gave a slight smile. "Now it's getting interesting."

Rai'kanna looked around, analyzing the village as a whole. "They chose a weak target… but not by chance."

"It's a line," I said. "They're advancing through specific regions."

The silence that followed showed they all understood.

Scarlett looked at me. "If this is a pattern… it's not just this village."

"It isn't," I confirmed.

I decided to gather everyone again to better organize the defense. We couldn't rely only on reaction. If this was truly part of something bigger, we needed to get ahead of it.

"We'll reinforce the entire perimeter," I said. "But not by repeating what we did yesterday."

Liriel tilted her head slightly. "You want to change the pattern."

"Yes. If they're observing, we can't be predictable."

Elara nodded. "So we alternate pressure points."

"Exactly."

Vespera already seemed to understand the plan. "And maintain constant movement."

Lyannis stretched her arms. "No fixed positions… I like that."

Rai'kanna looked directly at me. "We want to confuse whoever is commanding them."

"Yes."

Scarlett took a deep breath before speaking. "So it's not just goblins."

"No," I replied.

We spent the rest of the morning reorganizing everything. This time, we didn't leave any point completely exposed, but we also didn't create patterns that were easy to identify. Constant movement, position shifts, and full attention.

The villagers helped as much as they could, but I kept everyone away from the outer areas when the sun began to set. They had already done enough just by surviving until now.

When night fell again, the silence came faster.

Unlike the previous night, there was no long wait.

They came.

But not the same way.

The first sign wasn't footsteps.

It was impact.

One of the side fences was struck hard, breaking part of the structure. It wasn't a stealth entry. It was direct.

"Now this," Lyannis murmured.

"Stay alert," I said.

This time, they weren't trying to hide. Small groups advanced through different points, testing more than one entry at once.

"They split up," Elara said.

"They're trying to overwhelm us," Vespera added.

"Don't let them create openings," I said.

Liriel and Rai'kanna moved first, holding the main line. The impact was stronger than the previous night, but still controllable. Scarlett and Elara intercepted a second group from the side, preventing them from spreading into the houses.

I moved with Vespera and Lyannis to cover the third point. The goblins were more aggressive, advancing without hesitation, but still following a clear coordination pattern.

It wasn't chaos.

It was command.

"There's something wrong," Scarlett said, blocking an attack and countering with precision. "They're faster."

"They adapted," Elara replied.

Rai'kanna pushed two enemies back with force, holding the position. "They're not just testing entry anymore."

"They're testing multi-point response," I said.

Lyannis moved quickly beside me, eliminating one that tried to flank.

"They're getting better," she said with a slight smile.

"Because someone is learning," I replied.

The fight continued for a few more minutes. Nothing out of control, but clearly different from the previous night. More pressure, more coordination, more intent.

Until, just like before, they retreated.

Cleanly.

Without panic.

Without persistence.

They simply… stopped.

Silence returned faster this time.

Liriel held her position for a few seconds before relaxing. "Again."

"Yes," Vespera said.

Scarlett looked toward where the last ones disappeared. "They're not trying to win."

"Not yet," I replied.

Rai'kanna stepped closer, cleaning her blade. "So the objective is understanding."

"Yes."

Elara crossed her arms, thoughtful. "Yesterday they tested entry. Today they tested response."

"That means tomorrow…" Scarlett began.

"Could be different again," I finished.

Lyannis let out a small laugh. "So this won't end anytime soon."

I looked beyond the village, toward the darkness where they had disappeared.

"No," I said. "This is just the beginning."

The group remained silent for a few moments. There was no fear there. Only understanding.

The village was safe for another night.

But this was no longer just defense.

It was part of something larger being built… step by step.
