Chapter Thirteen – The Chamber of the First King
The staircase seemed endless.
Kwaku descended slowly.
The golden light below grew brighter with every step.
Kwesi followed closely behind him.
Adwoa walked between the twins, her three circles still glowing faintly.
Their father remained at the back.
No one spoke.
The only sound was their footsteps against the ancient stone.
Then Kwaku stopped.
"What is that?"
At the bottom of the staircase stood a massive golden door.
Two suns had been carved into its surface.
Between them was a single circle.
Adwoa stared at it.
"That symbol…"
She touched her chest.
"It feels like I've seen it before."
Their father stepped forward.
"Don't touch the door."
Kwaku turned.
"Why?"
"Because the chamber doesn't open for ordinary blood."
Kwesi looked at Adwoa.
"So it opens for her?"
Their father said nothing.
Adwoa slowly approached the door.
"Wait."
Their father grabbed her arm.
Adwoa looked at him.
"You said you saved me."
"I did."
"Then trust me."
He released her.
Adwoa placed her palm against the golden circle.
The entire staircase shook.
A deep voice echoed from behind the door.
"Blood remembers what the mind forgets."
The twins exchanged looks.
Then the door opened.
A wave of warm air rushed through the passage.
Inside was a vast circular chamber.
Golden pillars surrounded a raised platform.
At the center stood an ancient throne.
Behind it was a giant painting of a man holding a golden crown.
Kwaku walked closer.
His heart began pounding.
"That man…"
Kwesi stared at the painting.
"He looks like us."
Their father lowered his eyes.
"He was your ancestor."
Kwaku turned toward him.
"Who?"
"The First King."
Adwoa stepped toward the throne.
Suddenly, the room changed.
The golden walls disappeared.
She found herself standing in a forest.
She was younger.
Much younger.
A little girl.
A man stood before her.
Her father.
But he was young too.
"Adwoa," he whispered.
She looked at him.
"Where are we going?"
"Somewhere safe."
"Why?"
He knelt before her.
"Because they are coming for you."
"Who?"
Before he could answer, horns sounded in the distance.
The vision changed.
Fire.
Warriors.
Screaming.
A golden crown lying on the ground.
Adwoa reached toward it.
A voice whispered behind her.
"Don't."
She turned.
A young man stood there.
His eyes contained two burning suns.
"Akwasi…"
Adwoa whispered.
The vision shattered.
She fell to the floor.
"Adwoa!"
Kwaku rushed toward her.
She opened her eyes.
"I remember."
Their father froze.
"What did you see?"
Adwoa slowly stood.
"You didn't just save me."
She stared directly at him.
"You were protecting the crown."
Silence filled the chamber.
Kwesi looked at their father.
"What crown?"
Before he could answer, the ancient throne began to move.
Stone scraped against stone.
A hidden compartment opened beneath it.
Inside was a small golden box.
Kwaku reached for it.
Their father shouted:
"Don't open it!"
Kwaku stopped.
"Why?"
"Because that box contains the truth your ancestors died to hide."
Kwaku looked at Kwesi.
Then at Adwoa.
He opened it.
Inside lay a broken piece of golden metal.
The same symbol of the two suns was engraved across it.
Adwoa reached toward the fragment.
The moment her fingers touched it, the piece suddenly floated into the air.
Golden light filled the chamber.
A voice echoed through the walls.
"When the Two Suns rise…"
The chamber began to shake.
"…the Three Bloodlines shall unite."
Kwaku's eyes widened.
"What does that mean?"
The voice continued.
"But beware the one who carries the crown."
The golden fragment dropped.
Kwaku caught it.
Suddenly, footsteps echoed from the staircase.
Their father turned sharply.
"They followed us."
Kwesi raised his sword.
"Who?"
A shadow appeared at the entrance.
Then another.
Then dozens.
Nana Kofi stepped into the chamber.
His golden staff struck the ground.
"You have opened what should have remained sealed."
Kwaku tightened his grip around the fragment.
Nana Kofi's eyes immediately fell upon it.
His expression changed.
"The Crown Fragment…"
Behind him, soldiers entered the chamber.
Adwoa stepped forward.
"You know what it is."
Nana Kofi smiled.
"I know exactly what it is."
He raised his golden staff.
"And I know who is coming for it."
Suddenly, every flame in the chamber went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
A cold wind swept through the chamber.
Everyone became silent.
Then the golden symbols on the walls flickered back to life.
Kwaku looked toward the throne.
A black-cloaked figure stood beside it.
The same man who had watched them from above.
But somehow, he had reached the chamber before them.
His eyes rested on the golden fragment in Kwaku's hand.
Kwaku raised his arm, crimson energy gathering around his fist.
"Who are you?"
The man smiled.
"You will remember me soon."
He took one step forward.
The golden fragment suddenly began to glow.
Kwaku looked down.
"What is happening?"
The fragment lifted from his palm.
It flew across the chamber and disappeared into the stranger's hand.
Kwaku stared at his empty palm.
"Give it back!"
The stranger said nothing.
He closed his fingers around the fragment.
A powerful pulse of golden energy exploded through the chamber.
Everyone was thrown backward.
When the light faded, the stranger was gone.
Kwaku slowly rose.
Their father stared into the darkness.
His voice trembled.
"The Blood Crown has awakened."
To be continued…
