It wasn't a face card that appeared before her. Muller hadn't chosen the card she feared, rather the number nine of diamonds.
The moment the card landed on the table, the air around Jane seemed to grow heavy. Staring at it, she could hear her own heart sinking deep into the bottom of her stomach, dropping lower and lower until it felt impossible to breathe properly. Her fingers curled slightly against her lap. She hadn't expected it. She truly hadn't expected that the card Victor had told the truth about would actually turn out to be the Joker card.
It meant that all this time, Victor had given himself away without even lying once. Every word that came out from his mouth had been the truth from the very beginning and yet nobody had believed him.
And if only Muller had.
If only Muller had known Victor better... wouldn't he have chosen the card? Wouldn't he have realized that Victor was the kind of person who could speak honestly while making everyone think he was deceiving them?
