The dimmed lights of the indoor arena gave way to a kaleidoscope of colours that danced across the expansive space, illuminating the eager faces of thousands of basketball fans. Anticipation filled the air as the crowd roared, their cheers and chants a cacophony of support for the two schools
At the heart of the arena, the gleaming hardwood court beckoned the players, its polished surface a testament to the countless battles that had been fought and won. The basketball hoops stood like faithful guardians at either end, their nets swaying gently, ready to receive the fruits of victory
The state-of-the-art lighting system cast an ethereal glow on the proceedings, its shifting hues painting a surreal canvas above the court. Giant screens suspended from the rafters flickered with graphics, statistics, and replays, while the pulsating beat of the sound system matched the rhythm of the fans' pounding hearts
The high-stake high school basketball playoffs final had arrived - a decisive battle that would determine the regional champion for Lagos. The tension in the air was almost tangible, the excitement of the crowd palpable as they waited for the teams to emerge to emerge for their pre-match warmup.
The teams filed out to the court for their pre-match warmup. The players, each holding a ball in a bloodthirsty mood, took their position on the court, ready to display their prowess and determination
As the warmup concluded, the players gathered around their Coaches hanging on to the last words advice and encourage. These wise mentors, bore the weight of expectation on their shoulders impacting invaluable wisdom and experience to their young charges. The players absorbed these words, their steely resolve evident in their determined expressions
As the announcer's voice reverberated through the arena, introducing the teams and their line-ups, each player was met with a thunderous ovation from the crowd. Respectful nods and handshakes were exchanged between opponents, a display of sportsmanship amidst the fierce rivalry
As the players assumed their positions on the court for the opening tip off, Eno stepped forward, her eyes locked on the ball. She was determined to secure the jump ball, especially since she was facing off against Victoria, a player she has never beaten since their primary school years
Victoria, seeing Eno, couldn't resist the urge to taunt her. "Oh, if it isn't the weak little loser herself. We meet again. Are you ready for another lesson?"
Unfazed by Victoria's attempt to rattle her, Eno responded, "Victoria, I may have lost to you in our previous game, but don't think I'll remain on the losing end forever"
With a dismissive laugh, Victoria retorted, "Yeah, right. That's what you always say, but I always come out on top. You can talk when you can actually back your words up with some serious actions." Her words hung in the air, irritating Eno but also serving to fuel her determination
The referee's whistle pierced the tense atmosphere, and the ball was tossed high into the air. Eno, anticipating the ball's trajectory, jumped at precisely the right moment, and successfully won the jump ball. She quickly tapped the ball towards Oluchi, who was perfectly positioned to receive it. Victoria could only watch in disbelief as the Queens seized the advantage
"Alright, let's take the first points" Oluchi declared, wasting no time in tossing the ball towards Tolu. In a flash, Tolu propelled the ball towards the hoop, where the soaring figure of Tosin intercepted it. Her new sneakers sparkled under the bright lights of the court as she slammed it into the hoop, earning the Queens the first points of the game
Victoria, momentarily stunned by Eno's growth, muttered to herself, "Wow, it seems Eno has actually gotten better. She managed to beat me to the jump ball. But it's not enough"
As the game resumed, Fisayo, the point guard of the Rose Newton High School Basketball Team, led the attack. The entire arena was taken aback by something utterly unprecedented in the world of basketball – Victoria, instead of joining her teammates in the attack, leaned against the team's hoop, seemingly uninterested in participating
Oluchi, puzzled by Victoria's behaviour, asked Fisayo, "Why isn't she joining the attack?"
Fisayo explained, "Well, Victoria doesn't see the point in playing this game since we've already qualified. She thinks it's a waste of her time."
Dumbfounded, Oluchi pressed further, "Then, why is she even on the court?"
"Our Coach forced her to play," Fisayo continued. "She figures that as long as she's technically on the court, there won't be any issues"
Realizing that the Rose Newton High School Female Basketball Team would be attacking with only four players, Oluchi asked, "So, the four of you will manage attacks without her?"
Fisayo nodded, "Yes, we will. You guys are the legendary Charlie Queens Academy Female Basketball Team, known for your miraculous performances. Please, go easy on us"
Just then, Tolu tapped the ball from Fisayo's grasp, frustrating her. "Hey, I said to go easy on us!
Seizing the loose ball, Tosin, sprinted towards the opposite end of the court. Glancing at Victoria, she thought, "I don't care if you're a member of the Victorious Varsity or whatever; I'm not losing to anyone!" She leaped into the air, executing a powerful two-handed slam dunk. However, in mid-air, Tosin realized that Victoria hadn't even attempted to stop her, which only irritated her further
Fisayo elaborated, "Well, we four will take care of both offense and defense throughout this game. Victoria believes she's too good to play every game. She thinks if she plays this game, we'd definitely win. So, she's intentionally trying to make us lose here. Her goal is to face a team with a member of the Victorious Varsity in our first game in the Christmas Champions Cup. Victoria doesn't just seek victory; she also seeks tough opponents. If we win this game, our first game in the Christmas Champions Cup is sure to be a walk in the park. In other to get a more challenging game, she intentionally makes us lose in the playoffs final. She pulled this off two years ago and last year as well"
Upset and frustrated, Tosin yelled, "I don't want to win like this! Why won't she take this seriously?!"
Victoria turned to Tosin with a biting remark, "There you go again. I hate men, but I hate pushy women like you even more. Women who chase after stupid men who don't love them are a disgrace so stop it!"
Confused by Victoria's words, Tosin began thinking about John, wondering what Victoria could possibly know. Concluding that Victoria didn't know John, she brushed it off. However, her teammates quickly came to her defense, ready to confront Victoria, but the referee swiftly intervened, separating the feuding players before the situation could escalate further
The game continued in a similar fashion, with the Charlie Queens dominating the unfairly matched game against the four active players of Rose Newton High School. The blame for their predicament rested solely on their ace, Victoria, who refused to participate wholeheartedly. As a result, the Queens' lead steadily widened
Shalom called out, "Hey! Over here!"
Oluchi responded by passing the ball to Shalom, who expertly dribbled past two opponents and executed a flawless layup. The ball swished through the hoop as the buzzer signaled the end of the first half. With a halftime score of 65-20, the Queens were on a clear path to victory. Despite their overwhelming lead, the Queens wore expressions of humiliation rather than joy
"This is humiliating." Tosin commented. Her frustration evident
"Yeah," Oluchi agreed, sharing her teammate's sentiment
Shalom questioned, "Why won't they take this game seriously?"
Eno attempted to provide some insight, saying, "This is how it is against the Victorious Varsity. They are so strong that they can choose when to play and when not to. In this game, Victoria's message is clear enough. She's simply saying that she wants a challenging opponent, hence we are not good enough to make her play seriously"
Mercy, equally frustrated, exclaimed, "I'd rather lose by a hundred points than win like this. It's humiliating!"
Tosin, her frustration boiling over, grabbed a ball and ran towards Victoria, drawing the attention of the entire arena. The atmosphere was tense as the spectators watched the scene unfold
"If the Victorious Varsity is as strong as they say, prove it by stopping me now!" Tosin challenged before jumping from the free throw line. As she soared, through the air, she kept a close eye on Victoria's movements, expecting her to attempt a block. However, Victoria merely stood and stared back, her gaze unwavering
Seeing that Victoria refused to make a move, Tosin's frustration reached its peak. In mid-air, she subconsciously hurled the ball towards the hoop. The force of her throw propelled the ball straight into the hoop, leaving the entire arena in awe of her remarkable skill
As Tosin landed, she angrily taunted, "Is the Victorious Varsity full of cowards who back down from a fight?" With that, she turned away and began to walk off
Victoria's voice rang out, catching Tosin's attention. "Tosin, right? You want me to get serious? Just remember, you asked for it." A sinister grin spread across her face as she pointed the ball towards Tosin
"I won't regret it," Tosin replied resolutely, her eyes locked with Victoria's
