Chapter 7 - The Heir of Stormborn

The storm arrived before dawn.

Thunder rolled across the mountains surrounding the Legacy Academy, each rumble deep enough to shake the glass windows of the seven towers. Lightning tore across the sky in jagged silver veins, turning the clouds into a battlefield of light and shadow.

From the highest window of the Tower of Umbra, Aarav stood watching.

Rain struck the broken stone ledge outside in sharp, relentless waves.

Behind him, the library on the second floor had been partially restored by the tower's ancient magic. The shattered shelves had reformed, the black flames burned brighter than before, and the portraits lining the staircase no longer looked faded.

The tower was waking up.

Slowly.

Piece by piece.

Commander Seraphine stood nearby, now clad in restored black armor bearing the crest of House Umbra.

No longer corrupted.

No longer a wandering spirit.

Her silver eyes remained fixed on the storm outside.

"He is close."

Aarav turned.

"The Stormborn heir?"

She nodded.

"Kael was right. If the academy has sent him now, this is no coincidence."

Kael appeared from the shadows near the staircase, his expression grim.

"They've sensed movement."

"The restoration of the Umbra pillar."

"Your SS-Rank trial."

"The tower reactivating."

His voice lowered.

"The Six Houses will not ignore this."

Aarav's fingers tightened around Nightfall.

"Good."

His voice was cold.

"Let them come."

Seraphine looked at him for a long moment.

"There is a difference between confidence and recklessness, my king."

Aarav's eyes met hers.

"And there is a difference between fear and caution."

For a moment, silence passed between them.

Then Kael's lips curved slightly.

"The royal bloodline truly remains."

By midday, the academy grounds were in chaos.

Students crowded the central plaza, whispering excitedly as dark clouds swirled directly above the main arena.

The air itself crackled with electricity.

Every few seconds, bolts of lightning struck the tall spires around the courtyard, their magical wards absorbing the force.

Aarav stepped out from the western path leading from the Umbra tower.

Instantly, conversations stopped.

The same fear and curiosity from yesterday had only grown stronger.

"That's him."

"The Umbra heir."

"Did you hear? The ruined tower has started glowing again."

"No way…"

Before the whispers could grow louder, a deafening crack split the sky.

BOOM!

A pillar of lightning descended directly into the center of the plaza.

The stone floor shattered.

Dust and sparks exploded outward.

Students stumbled back in panic.

When the light faded, a lone figure stood at the center of the crater.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

A long dark-blue coat moved in the wind.

Silver lightning crawled across his arms like living serpents.

His hair was ash-gray, streaked with silver, and his eyes glowed electric blue.

On his chest gleamed the crest of House Stormborn.

A thunderbolt wrapped around a crown.

The crowd erupted.

"It's him!"

"Kaiden Stormborn!"

"The academy's number one!"

Aarav narrowed his eyes.

So this was the first rank.

Kaiden slowly lifted his head.

His gaze swept over the crowd without interest.

Then it stopped on Aarav.

A faint smile appeared.

"So the rumors were true."

His voice was calm, but every word carried pressure.

"House Umbra has returned."

The students instinctively stepped farther away, creating a circle around the two heirs.

Professor Drake appeared at the edge of the plaza, arms folded.

He made no move to stop what was happening.

Interesting.

This was being allowed.

Kaiden began walking forward.

Every step sparked lightning beneath his boots.

"I came because I was curious."

He stopped a few meters away from Aarav.

"To see whether the shadow heir is worth the noise he has created."

Aarav met his gaze evenly.

"And?"

Kaiden's smile widened slightly.

"I haven't decided yet."

The arrogance in his tone was different from Riyan's.

Not childish.

Controlled.

The arrogance of someone who had never truly been challenged.

Aarav rested one hand on Nightfall.

"Then decide quickly."

The plaza went silent.

Several students gasped.

Even Lyra Moonveil, standing among the Bloodmoon group, watched with unusual focus.

Kaiden's eyes gleamed.

"Good."

Without warning—

He moved.

Lightning exploded beneath his feet.

In a single blink, he was in front of Aarav.

Too fast.

Aarav barely raised Nightfall in time.

CLANG!

A spear of condensed lightning crashed against the blade.

The shockwave cracked the ground around them.

Students were forced back several steps.

Aarav's arms shook.

This was a different level from Riyan.

Kaiden smiled.

"You blocked it."

He vanished again.

Another strike came from the left.

Then above.

Then behind.

A storm of attacks.

Each faster than the last.

Aarav activated Shadow Step repeatedly, slipping through darkness just enough to avoid lethal hits.

But Kaiden kept up.

No.

He was reading the movement.

Kael's voice sharpened.

He's predicting your exit points. Change rhythm.

Aarav's eyes flashed.

Instead of retreating backward, he stepped into Kaiden's next attack.

Nightfall collided with the lightning spear.

A burst of black and silver energy erupted.

For the first time, Kaiden's smile faded.

Aarav whispered.

"Shadow Bind."

Dark tendrils burst from beneath Kaiden's feet.

Lightning crackled violently as he broke them apart almost instantly.

But it was enough.

Aarav slashed.

Nightfall cut across Kaiden's coat, tearing the fabric near his shoulder.

The crowd froze.

A thin line of blood appeared.

Kaiden looked down at it.

Then slowly touched the wound.

For a heartbeat, the entire plaza fell into stunned silence.

The academy's first rank had been injured.

Kaiden looked up.

And laughed.

A low, dangerous laugh.

"Excellent."

The lightning around him intensified.

The clouds above churned faster.

Bolts began striking the plaza barriers.

Professor Drake finally stepped forward.

"That's enough."

His voice boomed across the grounds.

"This is the academy, not a war field."

Kaiden glanced toward him, then slowly dispersed the spear in his hand.

The storm above calmed.

He turned back to Aarav.

His electric blue eyes now held genuine interest.

"You're stronger than I expected."

Aarav lowered Nightfall slightly.

"And you talk too much."

A few students actually laughed before immediately going silent.

Kaiden's lips curved again.

"There will be an official inter-house ranking duel in three days."

His voice dropped.

"I want you in the finals."

Aarav's expression remained unreadable.

"Then make sure you don't lose before that."

Kaiden's smile widened.

For the first time, it looked almost excited.

Then he turned and walked away, lightning dancing around his shoulders.

As the crowd slowly began to disperse, whispers exploded louder than ever.

"He wounded Kaiden!"

"Did you see that?"

"Umbra really is dangerous…"

Lyra approached from the side path, her silver hair swaying gently.

Her moonlit eyes lingered on the torn sleeve of Aarav's jacket.

"You survived."

Aarav glanced at her.

"Barely."

She looked toward the sky where the storm clouds were fading.

"Kaiden never comes personally unless ordered."

Her voice lowered.

"This means the higher houses are already watching you."

Aarav's gaze darkened.

"Good."

Lyra looked at him for a moment.

Then said quietly,

"Be careful."

Her tone was different.

Less warning.

More concern.

Before Aarav could reply, Seraphine's voice echoed in his mind from the tower.

My king, the sealed chamber has opened.

Aarav's eyes narrowed.

The betrayal record.

Finally.

He turned toward the western tower path.

Behind him, far above the academy, unseen by all but Kael—

A figure in crimson robes watched from the rooftop of the Solaris tower.

A cold smile curved beneath his hood.

"The shadow prince is awakening faster than expected."

The game between the houses had truly begun.
