Iron rang on iron below the north wall, a dull short note and then another, all down the line of the camp.
Raven heard it from the terrace with the cup in her hands. It had come up to her every morning since the frost came in. The camp drove its tent pegs back in at first light, every day, the whole length of the line, because the ground froze in the night and pushed them up out of itself a finger's width, sometimes more, and a tent with its pegs half out would go over in the first wind. Somebody had told her that in the eleventh month. She had nodded and gone on with whatever she had been doing.
Iron on iron. Then quiet. Then somebody further along starting again.
