The paste smelled of foxglove and old wax and, underneath, of the pig fat Lira Feng had used as a base four years ago for something else entirely, and Lin Yue had smelled it in a hundred rooms by now and had never once smelled it in a room where a child was frightened.
Joss Halbrook was not frightened. He was bored. He had been sitting with his arm out on the table for a quarter of an hour and had spent the whole of it explaining to her, in detail, the failings of a dog named Pitch.
"He won't go in the water. Not even in summer. Not even if you throw the stick right where he can see it."
"That seems reasonable of him."
"It isn't reasonable; it's the whole job." He turned his wrist without being asked, which was the fourth time, which was three times more than necessary. "Sedge goes in. Sedge goes in for nothing. Sedge goes in when there isn't a stick."
