The formation network registered them before anyone saw them — a wave of spiritual signatures rising from the southern passes like heat off stone. Not the depleted, fear-thinned patterns of the eastern refugees or the dense, ordered signatures of Imperial military personnel. These were woven into the land itself, tangled with root systems and water courses and the deep geological pulse of mountain rock, as though the people carrying them had never learned to separate their energy from the world around them.
"Confederacy," Silas said, looking up from the formation monitoring station where he'd been calibrating the latest scanner installation. "Southern approach. Multiple groups. I'm reading..." He paused, recounted. "Forty to sixty distinct signature clusters. Moving in parallel along at least three separate routes."
"They're here," Raven said.
