Raven hadn't moved from the eastern wall since the courier disappeared over the ridge two days ago. Not continuously — she'd eaten, slept in the chair Marcus had hauled up to the observation post without being asked, reviewed reports, signed authorizations. But she kept coming back to this stretch of parapet, the one that looked east toward the road that climbed out of the valley and wound through the foothills toward the lowland districts. The road that, according to Naida's relay network, was no longer empty.
"Fourteen relay stations have reported movement in the last six hours," 7T9 said from her shoulder. His voice carried the particular cadence he used when organizing data he suspected she'd find distressing. "The composition is predominantly civilian. Family units. Livestock. Draft animals. The pace is consistent with foot travel carrying heavy loads."
