Chapter 16 - Where the Void Loosens

They kept moving.

The girl's steps had slowed, her breathing no longer steady. She blinked more often now, her gaze struggling to hold onto the shapes ahead. The strain was no longer subtle it showed in the way her shoulders tightened, in the way her focus wavered between each step.

"We need to find a place," she said, her voice lower than before. "It won't hold much longer."

The man didn't respond immediately, but his pace shifted slower, more deliberate. His eyes scanned the darkness carefully now, not just watching, but searching.

"For a place where the flow is weaker," he said after a moment.

They changed direction slightly.

Not randomly.

Carefully.

As if even their path had to be chosen with precision.

Izumi followed without question. He didn't fully understand what they were looking for, but he could feel the difference in their movements. This wasn't wandering. This was selection.

The mist around them shifted constantly, thickening and thinning in uneven waves. At times, it curled tightly around their legs, clinging as if trying to slow them down. At others, it drifted away, leaving behind brief stretches of uneasy clarity.

The man paused once, only for a second, his gaze sweeping across the ground ahead.

"Not here," he muttered.

They continued.

Time stretched, uncertain and unmeasured. The girl's steps faltered once, just slightly, but enough to notice.

"Soon," the man said quietly.

And then

He stopped.

"This will do."

The place wasn't safe, but it was different. The mist here moved in slow, shallow currents, drifting low across the ground without rising too high. The air felt thinner, less suffocating, as if the pressure of the Void had eased just enough to allow a moment of stillness.

The ground beneath them was uneven but stable, formed of smooth, dark stone that did not pulse or shift. Faint, shallow lines ran across its surface too uniform to be natural, too worn to be recent, like markings left behind by something long forgotten.

There were no sounds.

Not even the faint hum that lingered elsewhere in the Void.

Just silence.

Complete.

Still.

Even the mist seemed quieter here.

The girl exhaled. "Here," she said, almost to herself.

The man glanced at her briefly, then back into the darkness. "Restore it first," he said quietly. "We don't have long."

"I know," she replied, her voice steadier now, focused.

Without wasting another moment, she lowered herself onto one knee. Her fingers hovered above the ground briefly before touching it lightly, as if testing its response.

Izumi watched.

The mist reacted.

Subtly.

Thin strands gathered near her hand, not rushing, not resisting just drifting closer, drawn in by something unseen. Her breathing slowed as she closed her eyes, focusing inward, steadying herself.

The man stepped back slightly not far, just enough. His attention never left the darkness beyond them, his posture tightening as he stood guard, ready for anything that might emerge.

Izumi remained where he was, still and silent, observing everything without interruption.

The girl inhaled deeply.

The air around her shifted not visibly, but enough to be felt. A faint distortion passed through the space near her hand, like heat bending light in a world where no warmth existed. The mist thinned in that spot, stretching, as if something within it was being drawn away.

Her fingers trembled.

"Almost…" she whispered.

The man didn't move. Didn't speak. But the tension in his stance sharpened.

Izumi's gaze drifted briefly across the surroundings. Nothing had changed for him. The darkness remained clear, the shapes around him sharp and undisturbed.

Minutes passed or something like minutes.

Then the distortion steadied.

The girl exhaled slowly, her shoulders relaxing just slightly. "It's holding… for now."

Silence returned.

But it wasn't the same silence as before.

The man turned.

Slowly.

His gaze settled on Izumi.

For a brief moment, he said nothing, as if measuring something unseen, something he couldn't yet confirm.

Then he spoke.

"How did you come this deep into the Void… alone?"

The question settled into the space between them, heavy and unavoidable.

Izumi didn't answer.

Not yet.
