Chapter 34 - Contingency

Batman (Bruce Wayne) POV

Someone was playing the long game; it was obvious. The only answer was who, exactly.

People would go to great lengths for those they cared about—Batman knew exactly how far they would go. But what was happening wasn't normal… Someone had placed the spark, and everything else ignited on its own.

The situation around S.T.A.R. Labs had stabilized to a certain degree with the intervention of a few figures from the League. Although, it wasn't pretty, as the people blamed the heroes—which wasn't anything new. People always tended to blame them when things went wrong.

Batman hated to admit it, but his attention was stretched thin. If Batman focused on a single case or purpose, there are very few things that he can't solve or fix.

Batman frowned as he looked at the screen of the Batcomputer. If someone was to look at Batman, they would see his suit had many tears in a few places and even injuries. His face, which was revealed as he pushed his mask off, was bruised, while dark circles were forming under his eyes.

Most of his injuries were from Bane causing chaos across Gotham, and only now, with Bane back behind bars, was Batman able to come back to try to deal with whatever mess was happening with S.T.A.R. Labs. It had been two days since he slept, which wasn't anything new for him, to be honest.

His fingers moved to the Batcomputer, pressing a few buttons as the contingency files came into view. Batman had reviewed the information of the fight of Pink Diamond with Wonder Woman for as much as possible, while reading all the files of Cadmus. The information didn't change, but it wasn't the point… The point was to allow him to think, to focus.

And even if he was completely confident in his memory, Batman never allowed chances for luck or arrogance to blind him… And only when he was done, he decided to start placing the basics for the Pink Diamond contingency plan. It wasn't done yet, but he needed to place the outlines for her file.

File titled: contingency PD

Name: Pink Diamond (There is doubt if the name resembles more of a social status; the hypothesis remains untested due to lack of information)

Height: 12.5 feet tall

((Notes to be considered))

1. Physical Capabilities: Subject exhibits strength beyond known human or enhanced baselines. Direct confrontation records indicate the ability to match opponents on the level of Wonder Woman through raw physical force alone. No reliance on external amplification observed.

2. Endurance: No signs of fatigue, perspiration, or physical strain have been recorded in any engagement. Subject likely possesses near-limitless stamina. Standard attrition tactics are unlikely to be effective.

3. Construct Generation — "Bubbles": Subject can generate pink, semi-translucent spherical constructs. Properties: High durability (withstanding significant force), capable of levitation, and responsive to subject's command. Primary uses appear defensive and containment-oriented.

4. Vibrational / Seismic Output: Subject can emit vibrations reaching or exceeding magnitude 7.5 on the earthquake scale. Upper threshold unknown. Limiting factor appears not to be energy supply, but the subject's tolerance to recoil/backlash.

5. The diamond of the target has been proven to carry a limitless amount of energy, and if the target's abilities use this energy, then it is possible that the target could increase the power output behind her powers by simply multiplying the energy output itself.

6. The target is capable of using her diamond like a space for storage, which invites the theory that the shield that, according to the testimony of Wonder Woman, is unbreakable, is stored in the target's diamond.

7. The target has shown more abilities, from flight and similar capabilities, like the magical effects of the target's tears or the powers to form constructs from the air.

Which invites the possibility that the target's infinite energy source could be used to simply power any capabilities that the target can think of. Which means the target could possibly form many more powers; since the source for all the target's powers is the diamond itself, then the only limiter is the target's mentality.

Mentality: The target proved to lack most adult emotional intelligence and naivety in most cases, and the target has been proven to lack any form of control on her emotions or the ability to hide them, which also proved to cause her to be volatile; and if enraged, she could go to a mental breakdown state where she would rampage against the target of her emotional outrage… Which makes the target very dangerous and weak against emotional manipulation.

(The lack of emotional intelligence suggests that the target has always lived in a state where emotional intelligence wasn't required, which could indicate a sign of the target being some sort of being of a high status on their planet. Which would support the name hypothesis about Diamond being more of a status, and it would explain why the target possesses such versatile capabilities.)

(It is also to be noted that the target shows signs of depression and extreme attachment to her pet, which could originate from her missing her home or some hidden trauma that remains unresolved.)

(If the hypothesis is true, then the target could be a very important individual of high status, yet not the ruler of the species, since she has obviously been sheltered from the need to face troubles directly herself or the need to lie and worry about consequences.)

(If the diamond is truly a status, then it begs the question of how many Diamonds are out there? And how long will it take for them to realize what is assumed to be the newest or youngest Diamond of them is on this planet and currently in containment?)

(If that was to be true… Then the state of Pink Diamond when they arrive could be the line between Earth facing a new alien threat.)

Batman's fingers stopped typing as he added the newest information in the computer. He stood up from his seat near the Batcomputer and he walked slowly to his newest project.

Batman noticed the few times that Pink Diamond called her body a "Lightform" during casual conversations. And if it is to be true, then his newest project will be to her just as Kryptonite is to Kryptonians. Which is why he voted against freeing Pink Diamond or questioning her directly until his project was done.

Batman's hands gripped a very modern-looking rifle, although it was nothing close to a rifle in function. It was the first piece. Batman simply needed three more weeks to prepare the finishing touches and add it to the defensive mechanism of the Watchtower, and then Pink can be questioned without any risks involved. And if things got out of control, then Batman will put her right back inside that magical bubble—this time for good… Of course, this was considering that the possibility of other Diamonds proved to be wrong.

The reason Batman doubted the possibility of other Diamonds was simple… There was a difference in Pink's tone each time she introduced herself. A small difference in tone; a small difference in how her back straightened just a little; the small pride that she can't hide when she introduces herself each time.

This happens in people in two cases:

• A. When the person is very prideful and arrogant about themselves.

• B. When they are, in actuality, declaring a title… not a name.

Or in her case, as Batman suspects… Both… A title and a name.

Batman's gaze locked down at the rifle in his hand, his mind racing with different paranoias as he shook it off… First, he needed to find where the patch of Pink's tears that was stolen from S.T.A.R. Labs is, and help with assignments of the missions of the team of young heroes.

The rifle was placed right back in its place as Batman, with confident steps, walked to the Batwing. The Batman may have countless things demanding his attention, which causes him to be overwhelmed, and villains use the cracks that form to slip through his keen mind. But once the Bat's attention was drawn and his suspicion and paranoia started ticking, it doesn't matter how deep they hide; it only becomes a matter of time before the Bat pays them a visit.

As Batman sat in the Batwing preparing to take off, a barely noticeable grin formed on his lips as his mind, that was working nonstop, finally figured out who was likely behind the riots.

'Lex Luthor, huh? I hope he won't mind me paying him a visit.'

'All I have to do is find where he is hiding… Shouldn't be difficult… I just have to ask the right questions to the right people after convincing them to cooperate.'

As the Batwing took off, leaving the Batcave in silence except for a faint footstep sound, a moment later, Alfred arrived carrying a freshly prepared hot meal. Alfred stood in the silence for a long minute.

'He has left already, hasn't he?'

With practiced patience, Alfred covered the meal while he sighed heavily.

"Very well, Master Bruce… I hope you won't blame me if I accidentally slipped some sleeping pills in your soup the next time you arrive…"

As Alfred turned back and started leaving the Batcave, he started thinking of ways to make sure that Bruce will take a good sleep.

"Three times the normal dose should be enough… Let's see Batman shrugging that… and if he did, then I will start using tranquilizer darts."

"Yes, that would do nicely."

The butler, satisfied with his sinister plan, left the Batcave humming an old song to himself.

Harley Quinn POV

Harley was having a terrible time. She was having such a good time with her Puddin' before that evil Lion sent her to who-knows-where!

She has been walking and cursing her luck nonstop for the last week in this unending forest! Harley was one step away from deciding to burn the forest with some good old gasoline. But her small friendship with Ivy stopped her, since she knew those plants were snitches… Well, it was that, and the fact that she didn't have gasoline, and the fact that she would probably burn alongside the forest.

She had a few wild guesses about where she could be, but nothing certain. But what she was certain of is that she would be the number one fan for deforestation after today. Green color is overrated anyway! And even Ivy wouldn't be able to change her mind on this!

'Sigh.'

Harley stopped as she climbed a tall tree just to see nothing but forest nonstop for miles, and with a deep breath and a calm expression, she exploded, screaming at the sky with her full might, "I AM BORED!"

But unfortunately for Harley, she would be stuck for quite a while; after all, the Amazonian forests were rather huge.

Unknown POV

An old man was walking home with a smile on his face after a hard day of work at the construction site. Thankfully, his friendship with his boss was quite solid, so he got the job back quite easily.

He arrived home as he took a shower and a cold cup of water. He checked on his granddaughter upstairs, seeing her room a small mess of books; she was currently asleep on her book, a pen still in her left hand as she slept peacefully. With a laugh, he slipped inside for a second, placing a blanket on his granddaughter as he collected the books on the ground and placed them on the bed.

With a small look to make sure he didn't forget anything, he left as he went downstairs to watch the news. He was satisfied with his life; what that Pink Woman did to him made his body feel like it was in his old twenties.

'Pink Diamond'… He made sure to memorize the name; it was the least he could do. He really hoped that she got the Joker and that she got out of there safe and sound. Although, he doubted that she was in danger in any way.

As he watched the news, seeing the chaos that was spreading near S.T.A.R. Labs, his face showed a frown as he read the news.

"Wait, what?… Those no-good heroes apprehended her? What for!"

His frown only deepened as his good mood was completely ruined.

"She was taking down the Joker! If she killed him, then she did the world a favor!"

Although he thankfully got out quick enough due to Pink Diamond helping him, he was there long enough to have an impression of the Joker, his old boss, and his colleagues. There were some like himself who simply had nothing to lose and were backed into a corner. But most were outright psychopaths.

But Pink didn't kill them; she only did that strange thing where she makes bubbles with them. Sure, it looked painful, but they deserved it. So if he had to guess, she probably wanted the Joker dead… And he completely supported the idea.

And now, the Justice League goes and places Pink in containment.

"What a joke… I better not see them so-called heroes, or I will give them a piece of my mind."

In fact, he already prepared very colorful sentences to say if he saw them.

"This is alien racism… Pink is innocent, I don't care about their justice!"
