Chapter 253 - The flames of youth cannot be rushed, young Satoru!

The sun hadn't risen yet.

Satoru entered Training Ground 3 with his body still aching from yesterday. Every step reminded him of the previous day's spar. His shoulder was sore. His muscles remained fatigued. His chakra pathways still had residual discomfort. He had slept poorly because of the pain.

I should have expected this. Guy told me to return tomorrow. Apparently he didn't specify that tomorrow would begin at an ungodly hour because he assumed I already understood the meaning of "morning."

He looked toward the field.

Guy was already there.

Naturally, he had been training for some time. Satoru watched him perform his ridiculous morning exercises. Guy noticed Satoru almost immediately.

"Excellent!" Guy's voice boomed across the clearing. "You have returned! Your spirit has not been extinguished by yesterday's battle!"

Satoru internally sighed. I wasn't aware that surviving one spar qualified as a test of spiritual endurance.

Guy immediately told him to warm up. Satoru realised Guy considered yesterday's fight essentially irrelevant to today's schedule.

Guy didn't begin by teaching the Second Gate. Instead, he started with the most important principle. The Gates were not simply techniques. They were the culmination of physical training.

Guy explained that every human body had natural restrictions. Those restrictions protected the body. The Gates temporarily removed those restrictions. The stronger the body, the more safely it could exploit what lay beyond those limits.

"The human body places limits upon itself so that it can survive!" Guy's voice carried the same dramatic energy as always. "But youth is the desire to challenge those limits! The Eight Gates allow you to tear away those restraints, but only a body forged through training can withstand what lies beyond them!"

Satoru recognised that Guy was essentially saying the same thing as his own research, but from a practitioner's perspective.

Guy's expression became more serious. He asked Satoru how long ago he had been injured. Satoru explained enough about the poison and his recovery without revealing unnecessary information. Guy immediately connected the dots. The First Gate forced additional demand through pathways that were already damaged.

"Your body is still recovering!" Guy's voice was firm. "If you force the next Gate open now, you will be asking your youthful flame to burn without fuel! That isn't determination. That is simply refusing to give your body the time it needs to grow!"

Satoru recognised the distinction. Guy wasn't telling him to stop because the Gates were inherently too dangerous. He was telling him that Satoru's current foundation wasn't ready.

Satoru had already reached essentially the same conclusion. His First Gate testing had demonstrated that his pathways were the bottleneck. He acknowledged Guy had firsthand knowledge that his own theoretical work lacked.

I spent a week measuring the problem. Guy spent years learning how to prevent it.

This reinforced why he had come here.

Satoru expected a lesson about Gates. Guy instead told him they were going to train.

Satoru realised this meant actual conditioning.

Guy announced the first exercise. Sprinting.

Guy had Satoru run repeated short-distance sprints. Satoru pushed himself. His first few runs were acceptable. His body quickly began showing the effects of yesterday. His legs became heavy. Breathing became difficult. Chakra pathways protested whenever he attempted explosive acceleration.

Satoru expected Guy to reduce the workload.

Guy simply told him, "Again!"

Satoru ran again. And again.

Guy didn't insult him for failing. He simply demanded another attempt.

Failure isn't interesting. The next attempt is.

Transition to push-ups. Satoru's arms were already tired. He completed a respectable number. His form deteriorated. Guy immediately noticed. Rather than letting him continue with poor form, Guy stopped him. Corrected his posture. Then told him to begin again.

Satoru realised Guy cared more about quality of movement than simply reaching a number.

Guy introduced a prolonged horse stance. Satoru initially thought it would be easy.

It wasn't.

His thighs began shaking. Sweat ran down his face. His injured body's compensation patterns became obvious. Guy observed silently. Satoru's legs eventually gave out.

Satoru tried to stand. Guy told him to reset. Satoru managed another attempt. He lasted less time. Guy said, "Again!"

Satoru internally started questioning whether this was training or psychological warfare. But he kept going.

By late morning, Satoru was exhausted. His clothes were soaked with sweat. Arms and legs were trembling. His breathing was rough. He could barely maintain proper posture. He failed another exercise. Fell onto the grass.

Guy didn't immediately encourage him. He studied him.

Satoru expected criticism.

Instead, Guy said something important. "Your body is weak."

Satoru didn't react defensively.

Guy continued. "But your will is not."

This was the first genuine compliment Guy had given him.

Guy explained that Satoru's determination was the only reason he hadn't sent him home. He saw someone who was willing to keep trying despite repeated failure. Guy framed this as the essence of youth.

"A body may stumble! A body may fall! But the flame within you decides whether you rise again!"

Satoru privately thought Guy had probably never heard the word "subtle."

Guy finally gave Satoru permission to rest. Satoru sat beneath a tree, drinking water, focusing inward. He could feel the condition of his pathways. They were exhausted even without opening a Gate.

Guy began the real lesson. He explained that the Second Gate was different from the First. The First Gate primarily released physical restrictions. The Second Gate pushed the body further by releasing additional restraints on stamina and recovery. It allowed the user to continue functioning beyond ordinary exhaustion.

It was not simply First Gate equals more strength. Second Gate equals even more strength. It changed the body's ability to sustain extreme output.

Guy explained the concept without sounding overly technical. "The Second Gate lets your body burn brighter than it should! But every flame needs fuel. When you borrow strength from tomorrow, tomorrow will come asking for it back!"

Satoru internally translated this into his own analytical language. The Gate temporarily accelerated recovery and replenishment. The body paid the cost afterwards. Strong conditioning reduced the severity of that cost.

He immediately remembered the Uchiha annotation. Thirty seconds. Three days unable to stand.

He realised the previous Uchiha user wasn't exaggerating. The Second Gate's danger wasn't just immediate injury. It was the recovery debt afterwards.

Satoru recognised why Guy insisted on physical conditioning before advancement.

Guy told Satoru he could attempt to reach the Second Gate. Not because Guy expected him to open it. The purpose was to teach Satoru what it felt like.

Guy emphasised, "No forcing. No prolonged attempt. Stop immediately if the pathways react badly."

Satoru sat down. Centred himself. Found the familiar internal restraint. Used his established mental posture.

Allow. Permit.

First Gate opened smoothly. Guy watched carefully.

Satoru reached deeper. He found something different. The First Gate was familiar now. Beyond it was another restriction. Deeper. He could sense a second layer of resistance. Unlike the First Gate, this one felt heavier. More deeply embedded.

Satoru tried to approach it. The moment he did, his damaged pathways flared with pain. The sensation was dramatically stronger than with the First Gate. Chakra circulation became unstable. His body immediately signalled danger.

Satoru didn't force it. He pulled back.

The sensation disappeared.

Satoru opened his eyes. He hadn't failed to find it. He had found it. He simply couldn't reach it safely.

The technique isn't beyond me. My current body is.

Guy nodded approvingly. He didn't treat the failed activation as failure. His philosophy was that feeling the Gate was progress. Knowing when to stop was also progress.

"Excellent! You felt the second door and listened to your body! That is the beginning of true mastery!"

Then his expression became serious. Guy told Satoru plainly that he couldn't safely open the Second Gate yet. Not with his current pathways. Not while recovering. He warned that forcing it could turn temporary damage into permanent injury.

Guy emphasised that patience wasn't weakness. In Guy's philosophy, allowing the body to recover was part of training.

Satoru didn't argue. He had enough evidence from his own experiments. His body wasn't ready. He realised Guy wasn't delaying his progress. Guy was making sure there was a future in which Satoru could progress.

Guy stood and stretched. He announced that they were putting Gate training aside temporarily. Tomorrow would begin a proper conditioning program.

Guy outlined the new focus. Running. Strength conditioning. Flexibility. Balance. Explosive movement. Endurance. Taijutsu fundamentals. Recovery.

The purpose wasn't merely to make Satoru stronger. It was to create a body capable of surviving the Gates.

Satoru mentally calculated the workload. His expression became increasingly blank.

I asked Guy to teach me the Eight Gates. He has decided to teach me how to suffer first.

Then he remembered what happened yesterday. Guy's physical ability. His inability to keep up. The First Gate's limitations. His damaged pathways.

He recognised that Guy was right.

Guy told Satoru to recover properly tonight. No Gates. No additional experimentation. No trying to secretly reach the Second Gate.

Satoru agreed.

Guy emphasised that youth wasn't measured by how quickly someone reached the finish line. It was measured by how much effort they put into reaching it.

"The flames of youth cannot be rushed, young Satoru! They must be fed, protected, and made brighter through training! Tomorrow, we begin building the body that can carry your dreams!"

Satoru internally sighed.

He really does talk like this all the time.
