Chapter 213 - Meeting The Teacher

The morning mist clung to Training Ground 12 like a veil, its pale tendrils drifting between the trees and settling across the dew-covered grass. The training posts stood silent and patient, their surfaces scarred by years of use; kunai marks, scorch patterns, and the deep gouges of practice swords. The air was cool and clean, carrying the scent of damp earth and the distant chirping of birds beginning their morning songs. Public Training Ground 12 was quiet, its stillness a sharp contrast to the controlled chaos of the Intelligence Headquarters and the tense atmosphere of the Uchiha District.

Satoru arrived well before the agreed time. He had deliberately wanted to arrive first, to settle his thoughts, to acclimate to the space, to avoid the awkwardness of greeting Shisui while still carrying the tension of the morning. He placed his bag down on a flat rock near the edge of the clearing, its surface smooth and worn by countless shinobi who had rested there before him. He took a slow breath, letting the stillness of the training ground settle around him.

He looked around, his gaze drifting across the familiar landmarks. The clearing where Shisui had first demonstrated the Great Fireball, its flames bright and fierce, its heat a tangible presence. A damaged training post that Itachi had accidentally scorched during a practice session, its surface blackened, its edges charred. The tree they had once rested beneath, its branches spreading wide, its shade a welcome relief from the summer sun. He remembered being an Academy student, looking up to both Shisui and Itachi, their easy conversations, and how naturally everything had flowed back then. He even remembered how they started out using this public training ground since Satoru was still in the orphanage's care at the time.

Now, he quietly wondered if choosing Shisui had actually been the right decision. Not because he doubted Shisui's ability, but because so much time had passed. They were no longer simply acquaintances as they were before. Shisui had become a famous jonin, his reputation growing with each mission, his name spoken with respect and admiration. Satoru himself had changed; he was no longer the eager Academy student, but a chunin, an intelligence officer, a shinobi who had learned to see the world through the lens of observation and analysis. The distance between them had grown, and he was not sure if it could be bridged.

Leaves rustled overhead. Shisui landed lightly on a nearby branch, his movements silent, his presence a sudden intrusion into the stillness. He dropped to the ground, his landing soft, his smile appearing as if it had always been there. Satoru immediately noticed the changes; Shisui was taller, his frame more mature, his carriage more confident. His smile was still genuine, but it seemed slightly tired, almost practised. Not fake, just heavier, as if it carried the weight of things he did not speak.

Satoru's internal observation was sharp. Something is bothering him. The smile does not reach his eyes as easily anymore. ANBU workload? Difficult missions? Exhaustion?

He briefly considered the Uchiha situation, then dismissed it. The political deterioration should still be years away; things should not be serious yet. So what was weighing on Shisui?

The silence stretched between them, awkward and uncertain. Neither knew how to begin.

Shisui spoke first, his voice light but carrying a note of genuine warmth. "You have grown."

Satoru's response was measured. "So have you."

A pause. Shisui's gaze was steady. "How have you been after becoming a chunin?"

Satoru's voice was flat. "Busy."

Another pause. "You?"

Shisui's smile flickered. "…Also busy."

Another silence. Both internally realised that this was far more awkward than expected. The easy camaraderie of their earlier days had been replaced by something more formal, mo

While the silence lingered, Satoru studied Shisui more carefully. He noticed the darker circles beneath his eyes, the slight stiffness around his shoulders, the less carefree body language. The smile doesn't reach his eyes as easily anymore, he thought. Something is bothering him. The political fallout between the Uchiha and the clan should still be years away. Things shouldn't be serious yet. So what is weighing on Shisui?

Shisui studied Satoru in return. He observed the calmer posture, the more measured speech, the more disciplined movements. Satoru thought before answering, his responses deliberate, his observations precise. He realised that Satoru carried himself much more like a Yamanaka than an Uchiha now; not physically, but mentally. Everything about him suggested observation first, reaction second. When did that happen? he wondered. He remembered the energetic Academy student, the Fire Release practice, the friendly conversations before the Chunin Exams. Now, there was more professional distance between them. He quietly regretted letting so much time pass.

The conversation gradually improved, the ice slowly breaking. Shisui asked about the Chunin Exams and the Intelligence rotation. Satoru briefly summarised his experiences, his voice measured, his observations precise. Satoru asked about ANBU. Shisui smiled, a familiar expression that carried a note of secrecy. "I cannot answer that." Satoru chuckled, the sound genuine. "Fair enough." Small laughter followed, the atmosphere easing slightly.

After another pause, Shisui asked casually, "Has ANBU approached you yet?"

Satoru froze for a fraction of a second. His internal thoughts raced. Is this a test? Does ANBU already know something? Is he allowed to answer? Was this question meant to gauge loyalty? He answered simply, his voice flat, "No."

Shisui blinked. He had not been testing him; his surprise was real. Every exceptional genin he had known eventually attracted ANBU. Satoru has won the Chunin Exams, awakened Sharingan, mastered Yamanaka techniques, completed Intelligence training, and built an excellent reputation. So why hasn't ANBU approached him? Possibilities began forming in his mind. Was someone deliberately steering Satoru away from ANBU? Or was someone blocking him? Even worse, did someone inside village leadership not trust Satoru? His expression changed only slightly, but Satoru noticed, though he did not understand why.

Rather than pressing further, Shisui let it go. He smiled again; this one felt more natural. "Well, that is not today's problem." Satoru relaxed slightly.

Shisui explained his teaching philosophy, his voice calm, his words deliberate. "I have read your mission reports. I have heard about the Exams." He paused, his gaze steady.

He had been there during the final matches, but that had been ANBU work, something he could not divulge.

"But reports do not fight, and reputations do not tell me how you move." He gestured toward the training ground. "Before teaching, I need to know exactly where you stand. Not where others say you stand."

Satoru understood. He nodded, his expression focused.

Shisui's voice was simple, direct. "Let us spar."

Satoru nodded again. "Alright."

They walked toward opposite ends of the training ground, their steps measured, their movements deliberate. Neither activated chakra yet, nor did either draw weapons. Just two shinobi taking their positions. The morning sunlight finally broke through the trees, casting long shadows across the grass. Shisui smiled, and this time, it felt genuine.

"Show me who you have become."
