Chapter 164 - Additional Rewards

The light caught the characters on the open scrolls, casting them in amber relief. Konoha's intelligence network had done its work. Now it was his turn.

He read in silence, his Sharingan activated, his mind absorbing every detail.

[Shigan Sabaku — Sunagakure

Clan: Sabaku. Known for: Extreme close combat ability. Confirmed Kekkei Genkai: Scorch Release. Combat Style: Aggressive, pressuring, closes distance rapidly.

The fact that Shigan defeated opponents without relying on Scorch Release means his physical ability is already elite. His Kekkei Genkai is likely an enhancement rather than his foundation. ]

Satoru wrote in the margins of his own notes: Do not allow close-range combat. Use genjutsu or long-range techniques. Force him to reveal Scorch Release first. If he is forced to use it, he loses the element of surprise.

[Maki Arashi — Sunagakure

Clan: Arashi. Confirmed Kekkei Genkai: Typhoon Release. Combat Style: Unknown. Notable: Her bloodline is considered dangerous. Her techniques are difficult to observe. She has a history of creating large-scale wind phenomena. Information: Extremely limited.]

Satoru paused. Limited information. That is the most dangerous entry in the entire scroll. Not because of raw power, but because her ability bypassed my Sharingan. If I cannot see it, how do I fight it?

He wrote: Avoid giving her time to prepare. Force her into predictable movements. Use sensory abilities alongside Sharingan. If I cannot see her technique, I need to feel it.

[Mio Hoki — Sunagakure

Clan: Hoki. Specialisation: Medical ninjutsu, Wind Release. Notable: Exceptional chakra control. Weapons: War fan (compressed air storage and release). Combat Style: Ranged pressure, attrition, battlefield control.]

Satoru's assessment was precise. Her chakra efficiency is terrifying. She wastes almost nothing. The war fan is her primary weapon; if I can close the distance before she can open it, I can neutralise her advantage.

He wrote: Close distance. Prevent fan usage. Avoid fighting a ranged battle. She will try to keep me at mid-range; I need to deny her that.

[Souta Kazuki — Amegakure

Clan: Unknown. Notable: Strange liquid metal ability. Kekkei Genkai (Water/Lightning combination). Combat Style: Defensive, patient, battlefield control. Information: Extremely limited.]

Satoru's eyes narrowed. Unknown bloodline a. Likely a combination of Water and Lightning Release. Extremely dangerous because he can control the battlefield without obvious techniques. He let his opponent cut him repeatedly; that means he is willing to take damage to win.

He wrote: Do not allow contact with the substance. End the fight before he establishes control. If he spreads his liquid across the arena, the terrain becomes his weapon.

[Daiki Yato — Kusagakure

Clan: Yato. Notable: Rare plant-based Kekkei Genkai (Spore Release). Combat Style: Area control, biological warfare, attrition. Techniques: Spore-based tracking, hallucination induction, paralysis agents.

Satoru's analysis was grim. The biggest danger is not his direct attacks. It is the environment itself becoming hostile. His spores can track chakra, induce hallucinations, and cause paralysis. A mask might help, but the spores can also be absorbed through the skin.]

He wrote: Finish quickly. Avoid breathing the spores. Use fire techniques if necessary. Do not let him establish control of the battlefield or get close to you.

[Kaito Kugutsu — Sunagakure

Clan: Kugutsu. Specialisation: Puppet mastery. Known: Multiple puppet control. Poison usage likely. Combat Style: Precision, distance control, attrition.]

Satoru considered. Difficult opponent because of distance control. His puppets can attack from multiple angles simultaneously. If I focus on the puppets, he attacks from behind. If I focus on him, the puppets overwhelm me.

He wrote: Destroy puppets. Target the puppeteer. Avoid being dragged into a battle of attrition. He will try to exhaust me before committing himself.

Satoru set down the scroll. The intelligence was comprehensive, but it was also incomplete. Every entry had gaps; unknown techniques, unconfirmed abilities, variables that could not be accounted for. He had learned to expect the unexpected. But knowing that something was coming was not the same as knowing what it was.

He turned his attention inward.

What do I have? he asked himself. What tools can I bring to the tournament?

He began listing his own arsenal, his thoughts methodical, his ego absent.

Sharingan — Capabilities: Predict movement. Copy techniques. Analyze chakra flow. Detect genjutsu.

It is my greatest advantage, he reflected. But Maki proved a weakness. Seeing something is not the same as understanding it. If I cannot perceive her technique, the Sharingan is useless.

Enhanced Chakra Field — Capabilities: Detect chakra. Sense intent. Identify elemental nature. Track battlefield changes.

Limitations: Hidden techniques can bypass normal sensing.

Riku's fight proved there are unknown variables. I need to combine sight and sense; one is not enough.

Mind Mirror: Reflection — Capabilities: Read surface emotions. Detect killing intent. Understand opponent decisions. Useful against fighters who rely on emotion or aggression. Weakness: Requires eye contact. Strong mental discipline can resist. It is not a finishing move; it is a setup.

Mind Mirror: Echo — Capabilities: Silent communication. Battlefield coordination. Tactical updates. During the tournament, I will not have teammates fighting beside me. Its value is reduced and eliminated.

Mind Mirror: Still Water(Genjutsu) — Capabilities: Disrupt movement. Create openings. Stop an opponent temporarily. Limitations: Short duration. Requires proximity. Strong opponents can resist. Useful, but not something I can rely on against monsters like Maki or Shigan.

Genjutsu Arsenal — Ripple Method. Genjutsu breaking. Haze Clone. Peripheral illusion techniques. Against a normal genjutsu user, I have the advantage. Against someone like Maki or Souta, unknown. Their abilities bypass normal perception.

He stared at the list. It was impressive, for a genin. But every opponent on the board had something that challenged one of his assumptions. Shigan was too smart for genjutsu. Maki was too mysterious for the Sharingan. Mio was too precise for attrition. Souta was too adaptable for prediction. Daiki was too widespread for avoidance. Kaito was too layered for direct assault.

I do not lack weapons, Satoru realized. I lack certainty. The problem is not having options. The problem is choosing the correct one.

"Satoru."

He looked up. Mariko stood in the doorway, her expression unreadable.

"They are summoning us," she said.

Satoru blinked. "Who?"

"The Hokage."

He felt a jolt of surprise. He had not expected to meet Hiruzen Sarutobi until the tournament ended. The Hokage's presence in Sunagakure was diplomatic, ceremonial, designed to project authority without interfering. A private summons was something else.

He rolled up the intelligence scroll, tucked it into his vest, and followed Mariko.

The room was modest by Suna standards; high ceilings, stone walls, a single window looking out over the desert. But the people inside made it feel larger. Hiruzen sat at the center, his Hokage robes a blaze of white and red against the pale sandstone. Shikaku Nara stood beside him, his arms folded, his expression relaxed but his eyes sharp. Sayuri was there with Ren, standing at attention.

Satoru entered, and immediately, he felt something wrong.

Someone is watching me.

His instincts sharpened. He scanned the room; six people visible. The Hokage, Shikaku, Sayuri, Ren, Mariko, himself. But there was a presence; subtle, almost invisible, like a breath held in the corner of the room. He expanded his chakra field, brushing against the edges of awareness.

Nothing. No additional signature. No hidden chakra.

But the feeling persisted.

He did not react. He simply filed the observation away and focused on the Hokage.

Hiruzen smiled, "Team Five. You have performed well." His voice was calm, unhurried, carrying the weight of decades. "You have survived the desert. You have navigated the ruins. You have earned your places in the public tournament."

Satoru felt the weight of the praise. It was not empty; it was precise, the observation of a man who had trained generations of shinobi and knew talent when he saw it.

"You represent Konoha in the tournament," Hiruzen continued. "You are not just fighting for promotion. You are fighting for the reputation of your village. The other villages will be watching. They will measure Konoha by your performance."

He paused, letting the words settle. "And I want to give you something to fight for." He looked at them, his eyes sharp. "If any of you wins the tournament, you will receive immediate chūnin promotion. Additionally, I will personally teach you any jutsu I know."

The room fell silent.

Ren's eyes widened. Mariko's lips parted. Satoru felt a cold shock run through him. Any jutsu he knows.

The Hokage was the Professor of Shinobi. His arsenal was legendary; techniques that had been lost to time, secrets that had been guarded for generations. The offer was not just a reward. It was an incentive. A promise that would push them to their limits.

Satoru looked at Hiruzen. He thought about the gap between them; the chasm that separated a genin from a Kage. He could feel the density of Hiruzen's chakra, even without activating his field; a vast, calm ocean, so deep that its surface barely reflected the light. He wondered, for a moment, whether he would ever reach that level.

The tournament is approaching, he thought. And now, I have something to prove.
