Chapter 71 - Chapter 71 - Two Words

Inside the room, four people sat together: Kagerou, Kanae, Kagaya, and Amane, who had quietly joined not long after Kanae's arrival.

Kagaya and Amane sat side by side, their posture composed, their expressions serene... yet there was something unmistakably amused beneath the surface.

They were watching.

Enjoying it.

Not out of cruelty, but with the quiet satisfaction of seeing something long overdue finally unfold.

Across from them, however, the atmosphere was entirely different.

Kagerou and Kanae sat side by side, the space between them just 'slightly' too wide, and neither looked entirely at ease.

They wanted to leave... They couldn't.

They wanted to stay, but thhey didn't know how.

And that contradiction showed, subtly, but clearly.

For someone like Kagerou, who had always been able to control his expressions with near-perfect ease… the tension now visible on his face was almost unfamiliar.

Kagaya noticed.

Amane noticed.

For a brief moment, amusement showed plainly on their faces and neither of them attempted to hide it.

*Clap*

The soft sound cut through the room.

Kagaya brought his hands together once, gently, as though resetting the atmosphere before it could spiral any further.

"Now that everyone is here," he said, his voice as calm as ever, "let us proceed to the main matter"

"Kaga-… Oyakata-sama," Kagerou corrected himself mid-sentence, straightening slightly as he forced his tone into something more respectful. "What exactly does this mean?"

"Hm? Yes, Kagerou-kun?" Kagaya replied, tilting his head ever so slightly.

"I mean…" Kagerou hesitated.

His gaze flickered, just for a moment, toward Kanae… then away again.

He frowned faintly, clearly struggling to choose his words.

"Is there… a particular reason the two of us were called here together?"

"There is," Kagaya answered without delay. "The mission I intend to assign is too dangerous for a single individual. It requires at least two capable Demon Slayers"

A small pause.

"That is why I have chosen both of you"

Kagerou's fingers shifted slightly against his knee.

"But… does it have to be Kan-" He stopped himself, jaw tightening briefly. "... Kocho-san?"

The air changed.

Subtly.

But unmistakably.

Kagaya had just begun to respond...

"No-"

... But another voice cut in first.

"What do you mean by that, Rengoku-san?" Kanae's tone was soft.

Polite.

Perfectly measured.

She turned her head just enough to look at him directly.

Her smile was still there.

But this time… it reached her eyes.

And that made it far more dangerous.

Kagerou stiffened.

"Yes?" he replied, a bit too quickly.

Kanae tilted her head slightly, her gaze steady.

"What is it about me that makes you hesitate?" she asked gently.

A pause.

"Do you think I'm not capable?"

"N-No, that's not-"

"Then…"

She shifted just a little, her hands tightening faintly in her lap before relaxing again.

"Are you uncomfortable being paired with me?"

Kagerou opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Kanae watched him.

Closely.

There was no anger in her expression.

No visible hostility.

And yet… something beneath it wasn't steady.

"Or is it…" she continued, more quietly now, "that you feel guilty?"

"Wai-"

"You don't have to answer immediately," she added, cutting him off, not sharply, but firmly enough that he stopped.

A brief silence settled between them.

Then...

"Rengoku-san…"

Her voice softened.

Just slightly.

But this time, it didn't sound composed.

It sounded… strained.

She held his gaze.

And for the first time since she entered the room... There was a crack.

Small.

Barely there.

But real.

"Do you even… understand what I'm feeling right now?"

Kagerou froze.

Completely.

Because for once... He didn't have an answer.

---

While the tension unfolded before them, Kagaya and Amane made no move to intervene.

They watched.

Not out of cruelty… but because this moment was necessary.

The two before them were not ordinary slayers. Kagerou had already begun to stand apart, and Kanae, too, carried the quiet potential to one day reach that same height.

Their paths would cross again and again in the future.

If something fractured here… it would not remain small.

Kagaya understood that.

And yet, beyond duty… There was something more personal.

Kagerou was his friend.

So just this once… he allowed himself to interfere.

Even if only by doing nothing.

A faint, almost imperceptible smile touched his lips as he watched the rare sight of Kagerou struggling to maintain composure.

'…Forgive me, my friend,' Kagaya thought quietly. 'This is for both your sake… and hers'

Beside him, Amane remained silent, but the calm steadiness in her gaze reflected the same understanding.

---

Kanae's voice broke the stillness once more.

"Do you even… understand what I'm feeling right now?"

This time, she didn't press further.

She waited.

Kagerou's lips parted.

Closed.

Then parted again.

For the first time, hesitation was visible, not in his posture, but in the way his thoughts seemed to falter before they could become words.

"I…"

His voice caught.

A brief pause.

"I don't know what to say…"

The admission came out quieter than he intended.

Not defensive.

Not deflecting.

Just… honest.

His fingers tightened slightly.

"...I'm sorry"

That was all he could offer.

No explanation.

No justification.

Just those two words, hanging in the space between them.

Fragile.

And insufficient.

For a moment, nothing moved.

Kanae was still there, sat across from him, her posture still composed, her expression unchanged at first glance. But her eyes lingered on him… searching, as if trying to find something behind those words.

Something more.

Something that wasn't there.

Slowly, her gaze lowered.

Not in acceptance.

Not in rejection.

Just… away.

Silence settled between them.

Heavy.

Unresolved.

It wasn't that there was nothing left to say.

It was that neither of them knew how to say it.

And forcing it now… would only make it worse.

---

From where he sat, Kagaya watched the exchange in quiet understanding.

The distance between them had not grown... but it had not closed either.

For now... This was as far as they could go.

Beside him, Amane remained silent as well, her gaze gentle, yet observant.

Neither of them intervened.

Not yet.

Then...

*clap*

Kagaya brought his hands together once more, the sound light, almost casual, yet enough to draw both of their attention back to the present.

"Let's put this aside for now," he said calmly, his voice as gentle as ever, "let us move on to the matter at hand"

The shift was seamless.

As if the moment from before had been quietly set aside… but not forgotten.

Kagerou straightened slightly, the earlier tension still lingering in his shoulders.

Kanae adjusted her posture as well, her composure returning, flawless as ever.

Yet neither of them spoke.

And neither of them looked at the other.
