Chapter 293 - Chapter 293

A day changes things. Not the memory of the drones, not the ringing that still comes and goes in my left ear when the room gets quiet, but the shape of it. Yesterday was noise and motion. Today is just tired.

We meet at DataStream Dynamics because Gwen didn't feel like sitting through Stark Industries security to get into a conference room, and Tony didn't argue. He shows up in jeans and a shirt that probably costs more than my rent, no entourage, no cameras. Just him.

Peter's got a bruise along his jaw he keeps touching like he forgot it's there. Gwen sits with her tablet closed in front of her, which never happens. Jessica leans against the wall near the window instead of taking a chair, arms crossed, watching the door like something might come through it.

I feel it too. That flat, worn-down quiet that settles in after your body finally stops running on adrenaline and remembers it's allowed to hurt.

Tony doesn't open with a joke.

That's the first sign something's different. He sets a tablet on the table, taps it once, and looks at each of us before he starts talking.

"I had JARVIS pull everything he could find. Figured you'd want to know who did this before the news cycle decides to tell you a worse version."

Gwen straightens. "Find on who? Hammer already gave a name."

"Hammer gave a first impression. JARVIS gave the file."

He taps the tablet again. A photo comes up. An older man, prison tattoos climbing up his neck, a face that looks like it's been carved out of something harder than skin.

"Ivan Vanko," Tony says. "Goes by Whiplash, apparently, if you ask him. I didn't."

Peter leans forward. "That's the guy from the warehouse?"

"That's the guy."

Tony doesn't sit down. He stands at the head of the table with one hand braced against it, and for once the performance drops out of him completely.

"His father was Anton Vanko. Worked with my dad, way back. Helped build the original arc reactor tech, from what JARVIS can piece together. Something went wrong between them, a falling out, a betrayal, depends who's telling it, and Anton got deported. Spent the rest of his life in Russia, poor, forgotten, drinking himself into the ground while my father kept getting richer and more famous for the same work they built together."

He says it flat, like a man reading someone else's obituary.

"Anton died bitter. And Ivan grew up on that bitterness like it was scripture. Every story he ever heard about my dad, he heard as a story about what got stolen from his."

"So this is revenge," Gwen says. "Against your father."

"Against the name." Tony's jaw works. "My dad's not around to hate anymore. I'm what's left."

Nobody says anything for a second. I already know this whole story.

"So he's not working for Hammer," I say. "Hammer's working for him."

"Hammer's an idiot who thought he found a genius willing to make him relevant," Tony says. "Vanko needed resources, a stage, an army of drones with my name stamped on the parts list. Hammer handed him all three and thought he was the one in charge."

"And he came after you specifically," Jessica says from the wall. Her arms stay crossed.

"He came after me specifically." Tony's mouth twitches, not quite a smile. "Guess I should feel special."

"Do you know what he wants now?" Peter asks. "Like, endgame. Is he done, or..."

"I don't know." Tony says it plain, no spin on it. "He got away clean. No idea where he's holed up, no idea what he's planning next. All I've got is a name and a grudge that's been simmering for thirty years."

The room sits with that. It's not the kind of answer anyone wanted, but it's the honest one, and honest doesn't come with a bow on it.

Gwen's the first to move, pulling her tablet back toward her like her hands need something to do. Peter stares at the photo a beat too long before looking away. Jessica watches Tony without saying anything else, filing this away next to every other thing this year has taught her about the world not being safe just because you want it to be.

Tony straightens up, and some of the showman creeps back into his posture, like he's decided the room's had enough weight dropped on it for one afternoon.

"Anyway. That's the update. Try not to lose sleep over a guy with a Russian prison tattoo collection."

"Great pep talk," Gwen says.

"I contain multitudes."

He gathers the tablet, claps Peter on the shoulder on his way past, and heads for the door with Rhodey's name already halfway out of his mouth into his phone. The room exhales once he's gone, that specific kind of quiet that only shows up after someone with that much presence leaves it.

Peter and Gwen drift out together, already talking in low voices about server logs and whether Vanko could've touched EDEN's systems while he was at it. I hang back by the window, and Jessica doesn't follow them either.

"You okay?" I ask.

"Ask me something easier."

She almost smiles. Almost.

"I keep thinking about how close it could've gone," she says. "Yesterday. All of it."

"It didn't, though."

"This time." She looks at me. "What happens next time?"

I don't have an answer that isn't a lie dressed up as comfort. So I don't give her one.

"I don't know," I say. "But you're not doing it alone. None of us are."

She holds my eyes a second longer than she needs to, then nods, like that's enough for now even if it isn't really an answer at all.
