Chapter 78 - Chapter 72:- Edward Cullen and His Complete Lack of Human Survival Instincts

For several long seconds after Edward landed on top of the truck—

Nobody moved. Nobody spoke. Nobody blinked.

Bella and Amara simply stared at him. Not in admiration. Not in shock. Just...

The kind of stare people gave when witnessing something deeply concerning.

Edward remained crouched on top of the truck.

Bella stared. Amara stared. Edward stared back. The silence became increasingly awkward.

Then even more awkward. Then somehow even worse. Because neither girl seemed interested in helping him.

Instead, they continued looking at him like he was a particularly strange animal that had escaped from a zoo.

Edward finally cleared his throat. Then gracefully jumped down from the truck.Acting as though everything was completely normal.

As though he hadn't just appeared from the heavens like a pale supernatural pigeon.

Amara was the first to recover. She pointed at him. "What is wrong with you?"

Edward blinked. "What?"

"Can't you behave like a human?"

Bella nodded immediately."Actually, yes."

Edward looked personally betrayed.

Amara continued. "You know we're living among humans, right?"

"I am aware."

"Then why do you keep doing things like this?"

Edward opened his mouth. Closed it. Opened it again. Nothing came out.

Amara pointed dramatically toward the truck. "You just dropped from nowhere like some low-budget Batman."

Bella immediately snorted. Edward looked offended."I do not look like Batman."

"Exactly."Amara nodded seriously. "You don't even have the looks."

Bella lost the battle and laughed. Edward sighed.

Amara wasn't finished."And let's be honest. You don't have the intelligence either."

Edward narrowed his eyes. Amara pointed at him again. "So what are you?" Silence.

Then she delivered the finishing blow.

"You're basically Batman without the looks and without the intelligence."

Bella almost dropped the hose laughing. Edward stared at Amara. Amara stared back. Completely fearless.

Because she had discovered something important months ago.

Edward Cullen could kill her. But social embarrassment could kill him first.

Edward pinched the bridge of his nose."Before doing that, I made sure nobody was watching."

Amara immediately replied, "Yeah, sure, Ed-Weirdo."

Bella made a choking sound. Edward's eye twitched.

He looked ready to fire back. And honestly? He probably had something good prepared. Unfortunately for him—

Bella stepped between them. "Okay. Stop."

Edward looked annoyed. Amara looked victorious. Bella looked exhausted.

Edward sighed dramatically.

Amara immediately raised one eyebrow toward him. A look that clearly said:

See, Dumbward? I won.

Edward looked as though he wanted to throw her into the nearest lake.

Bella wisely ignored both of them.

Then—

To Amara's horror—

Bella suddenly transformed.

One moment she was normal Bella. The next moment she became... Girlfriend Bella.

The difference was terrifying. She started fidgeting with her sleeves. Playing with her hair. Biting her lip. Avoiding eye contact.

Amara watched this transformation happen in real time. And honestly? It was fascinating. Like witnessing a rare animal documentary.

Edward wasn't any better. His expression immediately softened into that lovesick look. The one that made him appear simultaneously happy, emotional, and constipated. He stepped closer to Bella.

Amara felt the urge to leave the planet.

"I wanted to invite you somewhere," Edward said softly. Bella looked up. "Where?"

"My house. Friday."

Bella blinked. Edward smiled. "Everyone wants to spend more time with you properly."

Amara stood there. Watching. Suffering. Internally screaming.

Because hadn't they already gone to his house, why he is making such a big deal of this?

Hadn't they already met his whole family? Visited? Talked? Eaten food? Existed together?

Bella apparently shared at least part of her confusion. "But... haven't I already met your family?"

Edward nodded. "Yes."

"And I've already been to your house."

"Yes."

Bella looked confused. Edward smiled. "But now you're my girlfriend." Silence. Bella immediately became pink.

Amara immediately wanted to throw up. Not literally. Emotionally.

Bella bit her lip. Edward smiled. Amara looked toward the sky.

The universe remained silent. Cowards.

Then Bella looked toward Amara. Amara blinked. "What?" Bella shrugged. "Aren't you coming too?"

Amara pointed at herself. "Why are you asking me?"Bella blinked.

Edward looked at Amara. Then unexpectedly said, "You can come too."

Amara froze. For a second—

A very small, very embarrassing part of her had actually been wondering why nobody invited her.

Not because she wanted to go. Obviously. But still. It was the principle. Now she felt stupid.

Naturally, she doubled down. "No thanks. I have plans with jessica that day ."

Bella frowned. "You already have plans?"

"Yep."

"What plans?"

Amara answered immediately."Jessica and I are checking out that new shop downtown."

Bella nodded."Oh."That actually sounded believable.Mostly because it was true.Jessica had mentioned it.

Amara had immediately agreed because shopping required very little emotional vulnerability.

Bella smiled."Have fun."Completely oblivious.

Amara almost laughed.

Bella truly had no idea what was happening half the time. Then again—

Neither did Amara. So maybe that wasn't fair.

"Anyway," Amara said dramatically, "I'm leaving before you two start staring into each other's souls."

Bella looked embarrassed.Edward looked amused.

Amara pointed at both of them. "I have homework."

"Responsible," Edward said.

Amara gasped. "You take that back."

Then she turned and marched inside. The moment she entered the house she was greeted by chaos.

Charlie was yelling at the television. Billy was arguing with Charlie.Harry was laughing so hard he looked ten seconds away from falling off the couch.

Nobody even noticed her walk through. Perfect. Amara slipped upstairs quietly.

Back outside—

Edward watched her retreating figure through the window. A small smirk appeared on his face.

Bella immediately noticed. "What?"

Edward looked away. "Nothing."

Bella narrowed her eyes suspiciously.

Edward smoothly changed the topic.

And Bella, being Bella, allowed herself to be distracted.Upstairs, meanwhile—

Amara entered her room.Closed the door. And immediately flopped face-first onto her bed.

For several seconds she remained there. Motionless. Sulking."Fine."

She lifted her head. "Maybe I wasn't invited first."

Pause.

"Maybe Lucien hasn't called."

Another pause.

"Maybe he hasn't texted."

Long pause.

"Maybe I ignored him multiple times this week."

Silence.

Amara frowned."That's not the point."She rolled onto her back.

The ceiling offered no wisdom."I have trust issues."

She pointed accusingly upward."He should be more consistent." The ceiling remained unsupportive.

Amara sighed dramatically. "No. We're not thinking about this."

Immediately—

She thought about it more. Then she groaned. "Nope." Homework. Homework was safe.

Homework didn't cause emotional damage. Homework didn't make her question her feelings.

Homework couldn't look at her with ridiculous devotion. Homework was reliable.

Unfortunately—

Homework was also homework. And because Amara was Amara—

She had naturally waited until the absolute last possible moment to do it. Now she had no choice.

With the sorrow of a condemned prisoner walking toward execution, Amara pulled out her books.

And finally started her homework.
