The house was too quiet this morning.
Not peaceful quiet. Not the kind that settles on your shoulders like a blanket. This was the other kind,the sharp quiet. The kind that makes every breath sound too loud. A pin could drop on the carpet and the whole damn place would hear it.
I hated it.
Last night I spent hours staring at the ceiling, completely aware Julian was safe in the next room… and still feeling like something was wrong. Like the space beside me shouldn't have been empty. I kept waiting for the sound of his steps, that soft knock he does when he's pretending he's not desperate to see me. It never came. And I didn't go to him either. I wasn't sure which of us was avoiding the other, but it ended with both of us awake longer than we should've been.
I eventually slept. Barely. A few hours. Enough to function but not enough to quiet whatever the hell was twisting inside me.
