Chapter 27 - Chapter 27— Whisper of Forgotten Flames

Chapter 27 – Whisper of Forgotten Flames

The sand still steamed from the last corpse when the iron gong rang out.

Its deep toll cut through the arena, drowning even the howls of the bloodthirsty crowd. Warriors staggered, those still standing gasping for air, bleeding from a hundred wounds.

Of the hundred and thirty-two fighters who entered, barely fifty remained.

Chen Yue, Velira, and Ayara stood together near the center. Their clothes were torn, their skin bruised, but their eyes—burning with defiance—were unbroken.

The Tournament Master rose from his obsidian throne, his golden eyes gleaming with savage approval.

"Strong," he thundered, his voice reverberating in the bones of every man and woman below. "Stronger than most. But this was only the first taste. The Blood Moon demands more."

The crowd roared in answer, stamping their feet until the stands trembled like an earthquake.

Chen Yue inhaled slowly, the Chaos Meridian humming quietly in his chest. His muscles ached, his aura frayed, but beneath the exhaustion burned a strange exhilaration. The Triad Flow still whispered at the edge of his senses, faint echoes of Ayara's heartbeat and Velira's smoldering fury bleeding faintly into his own.

A Quiet Aftermath

When the gates closed and the surviving fighters were herded into the rest chambers, silence replaced the noise. The arena's stench of death clung to them even in the perfumed halls.

Ayara collapsed onto the stone bench, clutching her staff as though it were the only thing keeping her upright. Her emerald eyes trembled—not with weakness, but with the weight of what they had just done.

Velira dropped beside her, her sword resting across her knees. Her armor was cracked, her braid disheveled, but her presence burned as fiercely as always.

Chen Yue sat across from them, hands folded. For a moment, the three of them said nothing, the silence filled only with their uneven breaths.

Finally, Ayara whispered, "That… bond. The Triad Flow. It's too much."

Chen Yue's gaze flicked to her. "Explain."

Ayara's lips quivered. "When you struck the brute, I felt your fire scorch my veins. When you pushed your will into the chaos, I heard your thoughts—your anger. And—" She stopped, her cheeks flushing. "And something else. Something… deeper."

Velira's eyes narrowed, her fingers tightening on her hilt. "I felt it too. Not just thoughts—feelings. Your will pressed against mine. You wanted to protect us. To destroy anyone who threatened us. It was…" Her voice dipped low, dangerous. "…overwhelming."

Chen Yue leaned back, exhaling slowly. The System's voice flickered in his mind.

[Triad Flow Analysis]

Bond Synchronization: 41%

Emotional Overlap: Increasing

Warning: Overuse may cause loss of personal barriers between bonded partners.

So it was true. The bond wasn't just power—it was intimacy, forced into their souls.

Chen Yue met their eyes, one by one. "Then we'll use it carefully. Only when necessary."

Ayara's shoulders sagged in relief, though her flush remained. Velira, however, gave him a long, unreadable stare.

"Careful or not," she muttered, "you've already stepped past walls I never meant to lower."

Chen Yue said nothing.

The First Challenge

The next day dawned blood-red, the Blood Moon still hanging over the horizon like a wound in the sky.

The gong rang again, summoning them back to the arena.

But this time, instead of chaos, the survivors stood in groups, facing one another like wolves forced into the same cage. The crowd was quieter now, their hunger sharper, waiting.

The Tournament Master's booming voice cut across the silence.

"Round Two—The Duels."

The arena floor split into twelve smaller platforms of black stone, each surrounded by shimmering barriers of light. Fighters were chosen at random, dragged into one of the circles to face a single opponent until one could no longer stand.

Names were called. Warriors entered. Blood spilled. The crowd feasted on every scream.

And then—

"Chen Yue!"

The roar of the crowd shook the amphitheater as his name was announced.

Chen Yue stepped forward, his violet-silver aura flickering faintly. Ayara and Velira reached for him instinctively, but he shook his head. "Stay. Watch. If I fall, the bond will break anyway."

Velira cursed under her breath, but she didn't argue.

The Forgotten Flame

Chen Yue entered the circle.

His opponent stood waiting—a tall, lean man draped in tattered black robes, his face half-hidden by a cowl. His eyes glowed not with mana's shimmer, but with a deeper, older fire.

Chen Yue froze.

He felt it immediately. The resonance. The unmistakable pulse.

Cultivation energy.

The man smirked, his voice low and mocking. "So it's true. Another like me."

The crowd didn't notice the difference, cheering wildly as if this were any other duel. But Chen Yue's blood ran cold.

This man wasn't a mana-warrior. He was something else. Something from before.

"Who are you?" Chen Yue demanded.

The man chuckled. "Names are for the living. Call me what I am—the flame that your world forgot."

He lifted his hand. Flames erupted, not red, not blue, but golden-black, burning hotter and purer than any mana-born fire. The arena's barrier shuddered at the heat.

Ayara gasped in the stands. "That… that's not mana!"

Velira's eyes widened. "Impossible."

Chen Yue's system whispered in his mind.

[Alert: Unknown Cultivation Signature Detected.]

Style: Ember of the Eternal Sun Sect

Cultivation Level: Core Formation (Suppressed)

Threat Level: Extreme.

The man's smirk widened. "I thought I was alone in this graveyard of a world. But now… I see the heavens have sent me prey."

Chen Yue clenched his fists, Chaos Meridian roaring in response. "Prey? No. Rival."

And the duel began.

The Battle of Flames

The cultivator moved first. His golden-black fire lashed outward, coiling into a serpent that struck with the force of a tidal wave.

Chen Yue's body blurred, Voidfire exploding around him. He countered with a sweeping palm strike, his silver-violet flame meeting golden-black in a violent clash that split the arena floor.

The crowd screamed as the barrier cracked, barely holding back the destructive waves.

"Another flame!" the Tournament Master boomed, laughter echoing. "This will be glorious!"

Chen Yue gritted his teeth, sweat beading his brow. This wasn't like fighting mana-users—the man's cultivation energy carried the same profound weight as his own, the same defiance of natural law.

The cultivator sneered. "Your flame is unstable. Chaotic. It will devour you before it ever devours me."

He thrust his hand forward, the golden fire condensing into a spear. It shot toward Chen Yue like a star falling from the heavens.

Chen Yue's eyes sharpened. The Triad Flow pulsed at the edge of his senses, even though Ayara and Velira weren't inside the ring. Their voices, their will, echoed faintly in him.

Velira's fury. Ayara's resolve. His own chaos.

He gathered it all.

"Chaos Meridian—Second Release!"

The void around him howled as violet-silver flames burst outward, forming a storm that swallowed the golden spear whole. He dashed through the storm, fist blazing, and slammed it toward the man's chest.

Impact.

The cultivator staggered back, coughing blood, his robe torn. But his smile didn't fade.

"Good," he rasped. "Very good. Perhaps you are worthy of the truth."

Chen Yue froze, panting. "What truth?"

The man wiped the blood from his lips. His golden eyes gleamed. "That cultivation was never lost in this world. It was stolen."

Before Chen Yue could respond, the gong thundered again—signaling the end of the duel. The barriers snapped shut, dragging them apart.

The crowd roared, drowning out his words.

But Chen Yue's heart hammered in his chest.

Stolen?
