Chapter 207 - LIONS

Feeling the immense weight of the massive hand upon his shoulder, Legion Commander Miles was instantly struck with a deep sense of reverence. He dropped smoothly onto one knee. "My Lord."

"We are in a war zone; do not concern yourself with protocol."

Blazkowicz took an exquisitely crafted black obsidian case from an attendant and retrieved a Third-Class Medal. "This is your reward."

"A testament to the supreme valor of you and your legion."

At the mention of his legion, Miles threw his shoulders back and stood at rigid attention, a profound, unyielding pride swelling within his chest.

He had spent his early life serving in the military of Pseudo-Earth, before being contracted by the RDA to lead a contingent of mercenaries on Pandora. He had dedicated his entire life to the crucible of combat, yet never before had he felt a sense of honor as absolute as this.

Most of his service under the Pseudo-Earth government had involved suppression actions—deploying to crush desperate, starving civilians who had taken up arms simply to survive. Those operations were frequently little more than massacres, utterly devoid of honor. At its core, it was a fully mechanized military turning its wargear upon its own destitute kin, exterminating fellow humans.

It was only when he arrived on Pandora that he encountered intelligent alien life and felt the true calling of a soldier: expanding the frontiers of Mankind.

Yet those scientists—corporate functionaries sequestered away in their ivory towers—had decried the mercenary army's actions against the natives as a slaughter. They perched upon their moral high ground, hurling self-righteous criticisms, while conveniently forgetting that countless human brothers and sisters were perishing back on their dying homeworld every passing second.

The heavens had shown mercy.

Just as he was slipping into a profound crisis of purpose, the Imperium of Man materialized. A magnificent empire had surged forth from the deep void, bringing a glorious new mandate to the isolated branches of humanity: purge the xenos, reclaim the galaxy!

Now, he was actively contributing to the grand resurgence of Mankind, standing upon a real battlefield to eradicate xenos filth. This flavor of glory was the true purpose of a soldier!

"A Third-Class Medal, to honor the courage you have demonstrated."

With the ambient artillery thundering in the distance like celebratory fireworks, Blazkowicz pressed the medal onto Miles's chest plate, its laser-fused base biting securely into the alloy armor.

With the presentation complete, Blazkowicz continued his march toward the next trench line; the first wave of frontline decorations had only just begun.

Miles snapped a crisp salute to the towering silhouette. Once the King of Novik had faded into the smoke, his armored fingers gently traced the contours of the medal, feeling the true weight of honor for the first time.

He had led a spearhead of heroes deep into the xenos lines, systematically sabotaging a primary shield generator array and allowing the subsequent orbital bombardments to vaporize over a million enemy thralls. To risk body and soul for such a staggering tactical victory, and yet it only met the baseline criteria for a Third-Class citation.

"Incredible," Miles muttered, finding it impossible to fathom what manner of reality-shattering exploit would be required to earn a First-Class or a Grand Citation. The brief spark of individual vanity vanished completely; from that moment on, Miles would never dare look down upon the heroes of this empire.

Across a sprawling, five-hundred-kilometer frontline, legends were as common as the sand, and the true titans hidden within the billion-strong host were rapidly forging their names in the fires of conflict.

"Legion, prepare for extraction! We are logged in the primary rotation sequence."

The long-awaited deployment break had arrived.

Miles raised his wrist to check his tactical terminal, finding that time moved in erratic, unpredictable rhythms under the high-intensity stress of total war. Over three long months, their physical stamina and psychological fortitude had been stretched to the absolute breaking point. This rotation would allow them to reconstitute their numbers; once tempered in this level of fire, the legion's overall combat capability would skyrocket.

As the fresh relief divisions marched into the trenches, Miles looked up into the smoke-choked sky one final time before falling back. Grimacing, he accessed his tactical interface to review the orbital telemetry of the star system.

Planets Five and Six would reach their absolute orbital convergence in exactly two months.

His pupils contracted sharply. Miles knew with absolute certainty that the most savage phase of the campaign was looming—the theater was about to see the introduction of transcendent power.

He looked toward the far horizon. At the edge of his vision, squads of Night Sentinels were moving forward in disciplined files, while out from the dense silhouette of the iron works, towering Titan units were rising grandly against the skyline!

The true battle was only just beginning.

A war of pure attrition is a rigid affair, yet it serves as the ultimate benchmark of military capability.

Over the course of six grueling months, Planet Five had yielded a spectacular kill ratio: the elite columns of Nur had systematically obliterated a hundred billion xenos auxiliaries, while sustaining barely a hundred million casualties of their own.

A ratio of 1:1,000. On any standard battlefield, such numbers would be deemed an absolute triumph.

Yet the command staff knew the cold reality behind the data: alongside those hundred million mortal lives, several billion tactical automata had been completely written off. Though the relentless recovery and recasting operations had mitigated the material drain significantly, the sheer volume of structural loss remained an undeniable fact.

Inside the primary command theater, the atmosphere was suffocatingly solemn.

Blazkowicz stood upon a raised observation platform, his arms crossed over his chest plate, his piercing eyes locked onto the sprawling holographic sand table. His expression was completely unreadable. Senior staff officers flanked the Archon, while Junior held the vanguard position at the apex of the display, scanning the theater with a clean, expressionless visage.

Across the holographic projection, countless shifting vectors traced the shifting reality of the system.

The primary orbital convergence had arrived!

In terms of pure astronomical scale, the two planets were practically brushing against one another, their respective gravitational fields interlocking in a violent embrace. Under normal circumstances, they would have traded momentum, their mutual pull warping their original trajectories before the massive gravitational well of the pulsar dragged them back into alignment.

But today was different; the hand of technology had permanently rewritten the laws of nature.

Driven by a shared tactical consensus, the dark sides of both planets erupted with blinding brilliance. Colossal, super-scaled plasma propulsion arrays flared into life, spewing out radiant exhaust plumes that stretched for hundreds of thousands of kilometers into the void! Hundreds of mountain-sized engine complexes labored simultaneously, anchoring the planets in space and pinning them so firmly that the surrounding celestial bodies seemed to freeze in place.

The two worlds moved into perfect synchronization, facing each other like two titanic predators, their sheer lethality condensing into something almost tangible across the vacuum.

"FIRE!" the Rangdan Overlords screamed into their command voxes.

"FIRE!" the Lion bellowed with cold, merciless authority.

Along the equatorial ridges of both worlds, continental chains of macro-cannons erupted in a synchronized fury. The staggering kinetic recoil caused the crusts of the planets to shudder, subtly warping their synchronized orbits. The collective glare lit up the sector as thousand-meter-caliber macro-artillery arrays thundered, launching shells accelerated to ninety percent of the speed of light. These rounds streaked across the void like shooting stars, slamming directly into the defensive grid.

In an instant, several layers of planetary-grade void shields shattered, the concussive force rattling the cores of the worlds. Between the two planets, super-heavy lance strikes and roaring torrents of plasma were traded continuously, their immense energy combining into a stellar storm that threatened to incinerate anything caught in its wake.

This mutual bombardment served as the definitive opening salvo; the tense standstill gripping the J-11 system was shattered, and total war had broken loose.

[Primary void fleet is engaging. Objective: Suppress the Rangdan fleet and prevent enemy drop-keeps from making landfall on World Seven.]

[World Seven will bear the brunt of the incoming pressure. Dark Angels Legion, victory or defeat rests entirely upon your shoulders.]

[Salamanders Legion, your primary directive is the defense of World Eight. Your fleet elements must remain poised to provide immediate reinforcement to World Seven.]

[The conflict on Planet Five will intensify; its geographical vector remains critical. Maintain absolute defensive vigilance.]

[Iron Hands are positioned along the outer rim. Maintain your defensive perimeter while seeking opportunities to launch flanking support for your brothers.]

[The operational burden is immense; do not grow complacent. At this stage, the primary fire of the Blackstone Fortresses and Ark Mechanicus vessels will not be introduced into the active engagement sequence.]

[Brothers, the armories are fully unlocked; there is no longer any need for restraint. High Command guarantees that no strategic liability will be pursued after the war.]

Alongside these clinical digital directives came a deep, resonant blessing: "Brothers, our hearts beat as one. Together, we shall cast down this apex foe!"

Across the command centers of every world, the glowing runes of the operational mandate conveyed a singular, absolute command: unleash hell!

"Relinquishing fleet command," the Master of the Drakes boomed, his heavy voice echoing through the vox. "My focus remains entirely upon the ground theater; I leave the fleet elements to Brother Ferrus."

"Aside from the core Legion warships, all auxiliary fleets are hereby transferred to High Command."

[I shall wield this massive asset with absolute precision.]

The J-11 system was now a chaotic vortex of destruction. More than twenty thousand capital ships were locked in close-quarters butchery across the vacuum of space. Both factions anchored their positions against massive star-fortresses and heavily fortified worlds, launching savage offensives and exploiting the briefest microsecond of data lag to deliver devastating strikes.

The decision to pull the Iron Hands Legion away from the central ground theater, allowing Ferrus to focus entirely on orchestrating the theater-wide void war, proved to be a masterstroke. Utilizing the celestial bodies as anchors and heavy star-fortresses as leverage points, he engaged the Rangdan fleet in an unrelenting dance of kinetic maneuvering and structural attrition. The Primarch did not fail his brothers, locking down the xenos void fleets and maintaining a secure sky above their heads.

"My Lord, enemy drop-keeps are descending amidst the orbital debris."

Inside the primary command theater of World Seven, the cogitator arrays delivered real-time updates, throwing the visuals onto the central holographic table. Sheltered within the drifting wreckage of shattered starships, xenos troop drop-keeps were plunging toward the surface, utilizing the fields of debris as kinetic shields.

Lion El'Jonson had long since vacated his command throne. Encased in his magnificent power armor, he stood directly beside the tactical map; the primary theater left no room for complacency, and he would command this battle on his feet.

The Lion let out a low, menacing growl. "Coordinate our forces for a systematic purge. Do not allow the xenos to establish a single foothold within the territory of the Lion."

"Elite Rangdan shock-hosts are making landfall; their primary vector is the destruction of our surface installations."

He narrowed his eyes, contemplating the tactical layout for a brief microsecond. "Order the Ravenwing to deploy immediately for a hunting sweep. Authorization for the utilization of Relic weaponry is granted."

"You know exactly what result I expect," the Lion growled, pointing a finger directly at the Grand Master of the Ravenwing. "Show them the true power of the First Legion!"

"For the Emperor! For the Lion!"

The Grand Master of the Ravenwing let out a fierce battle cry, his fist slamming against his chest plate in a concussive ring of ceramite. He strode swiftly to a dedicated section of the primary command console, immediately broadcasting the deployment orders to his specialized columns to initiate the systematic hunting of the Rangdan drop-hosts.

The Ravenwing—one of the specialized "Six Wings" of the Legion restructured after the Lion's return—possessed an unparalleled expertise in high-speed, devastating shock strikes.

As the tactical directives flashed across the system, the pride of lions under the command of the First Primarch bared its claws to the dark.
