On the agricultural world of U-1, a massive number of transport vessels crowded the orbital spaceport, loading supplies and provisions bound for the front lines.
An ancient scanner swept across the system, rendering a stellar overview. As the scanning deepened, the holographic display updated, steadily filling in every detail.
The system was teeming with activity. Fleets of cargo freighters streamed in from the rear, while an endless line of ships departed the spaceport, ferrying logistical supplies toward the war zone.
"Advance the Blackstone Fortress. Deploy Exterminatus."
Blazkowicz touched the holographic projection of the world, executing the viral cleansing order upon the bountiful agricultural planet.
Scanning the overview of the U-1 system, Blazkowicz noted the sheer abundance of supply stations and the automated machinery working tirelessly to load and unload the freighters. It was evident the Rangdan Empire had operated here for at least two decades, thoroughly prepared for an invasion of the Imperium of Man. Even while concealing their true strength, the Rangdan had never forgotten their ambition to invade and conquer humanity.
The invasion alarms blared before the fleet even translated into realspace. The local defense fleet surged to full thrust, rushing to reinforce the sector experiencing the warp fluctuations.
The Rangdan defenders showed no hesitation or panic. They did not waste time obsessing over how the human fleet had bypassed their forward defensive lines to strike directly at a logistics hub. Whatever the cause, the human arrival meant a full-scale war was now underway.
Defense platforms activated across the system as the local fleet threw itself at the human fortress-ship. The Rangdan fought fiercely to protect their homeland, launching a rapid and aggressive assault.
In the pyramidal command bridge, an ancient cogitator completed a swift calculation, concluding that the system's defensive firepower was insufficient to breach the fortress's psychic void shields. Backed by this tactical data, Blazkowicz refrained from deploying his escort fleet to engage the enemy, refusing to waste precious time in a prolonged skirmish.
The eight-pointed star of the Blackstone Fortress began to rotate. Lacking conventional external engine thrusters, the vessel utilized ancient technology to manipulate anchoring gravity fields, propelling itself rapidly toward the agricultural world.
A pale violet psychic shield flared to life. Countless energy beams and torpedoes slammed into the barrier, sending rippling waves across its surface, yet failing to shake the shield's integrity.
Seeing that their firepower was yielding negligible results, the commanding Rangdan officer did not hesitate. He ordered the entire fleet to retreat, abandoning the supply world.
The Blackstone Fortress ground to a halt.
Before withdrawing, the Rangdan fleet detonated the space stations and saturated the agricultural world with radiation bombs, wiping out all life to ensure these critical logistical nodes would not fall into human hands.
As the agricultural world turned a sickly, toxic green, Blazkowicz pondered the situation before issuing his next command: "Bypass U-2. Proceed directly to U-3."
"The resolve of the Rangdan is striking," Blazkowicz remarked. "This alien empire is far more resilient than we anticipated."
"We aren't striking U-2?" Harlan asked, pulling up the intelligence data. U-2 was an industrial world responsible for producing forward ammunition supplies—another highly critical geographic node.
"Correct." Blazkowicz nodded, summoning the starmap with a wave of his hand to adjust the offensive parameters. "A plan is just a plan. War is never static; it demands adaptation based on real-time developments."
Ahead of the Blackstone Fortress, realspace tore open, and the massive citadel slowly crossed the threshold into the warp.
Inside the command bridge, Blazkowicz turned to Harlan. "Where do you think we and the Rangdan will find ourselves by the mid-to-late stages of this war?"
"A decisive confrontation. A pitched battle," Harlan answered without hesitation. It was a straightforward question.
Though the Champion Swordsman took no pleasure in grand strategy, he had commanded fleets before. He possessed a sharp intuition for the flow of war and boasted ample experience.
Warfare waged within a span of a few hundred light-years was manageable. Forces could be deployed fluidly, allowing opposing commanders to test their tactical wits against one another across a dozen systems. But once the scale expanded further, stretching lines of communication beyond their breaking points, massive campaigns inevitably culminated in a singular, decisive engagement. Both sides would tacitly agree on a specific strategic point, pouring in immense forces to compel the opponent into a direct, frontal clash.
"But what does that have to do with bypassing these systems?" Harlan asked.
The starmap glowed brilliantly, marking every critical world provided by Solas. Harlan moved his fingers quickly across the display, tracing an attack route. It was a conventional trajectory encompassing over a hundred industrial worlds and several forge worlds—the absolute lifeblood of the Rangdan in the Fourth Sector.
"A pitched battle requires the concentration of forces," Blazkowicz said as the holographic lights shifted, automatically generating a viable operational model based on his dictation. "And the Rangdan are already adjusting their posture."
Another projection flared to life, looping footage of the Rangdan fleet's rapid retreat and their ruthless destruction of the agricultural world.
Looking at the display, Blazkowicz spoke in a low, commanding voice. "If we simply barrel through, systematically demolishing every vital Rangdan world, we will indeed weaken them significantly."
"However," Blazkowicz continued, "doing so also relieves the Rangdan of their defensive burdens. Their void fleets would be freed from maintaining endless defensive lines and patrol routes. This would accelerate the alien mobilization, forcing that decisive confrontation much sooner."
"When that happens, we would be forced to return and reinforce our own front lines, meaning our overall destruction of the Rangdan war potential would actually decrease due to our hasty withdrawal."
"Furthermore, as their fleets consolidate from successive evacuations, the Rangdan defensive forces waiting for us would grow progressively stronger at every turn, eventually dragging us into a grueling war of attrition."
Harlan studied the evolving tactical projection, slowly grasping the strategic flaws of sticking to a rigid, linear path.
"So you mean to say... we strike a select few worlds, leave the others intact, and effectively stall them—perhaps even forcing the Rangdan to commit reinforcements?"
"Precisely." Blazkowicz nodded, sweeping away the previous attack plan and letting the Blackstone's cogitator generate a randomized sequence of target coordinates. "Hit and run. We fully exploit our mobility advantage, forcing the Rangdan to expend immense energy anticipating our next strike."
"Meanwhile, the worlds we leave behind will act as anchors, pinning the Rangdan fleets down in their respective sectors and preventing them from joining the main theater of war."
"I see." Harlan grinned, rubbing his hands together in anticipation. "Let's fight it their way!"
By shifting from a standard war of extermination to a guerrilla campaign behind enemy lines, the fleet would be dancing on the edge of a blade, significantly increasing the danger. Yet the Champion Swordsman felt a surge of excitement. The Blackstone Fortress would serve as the ultimate tactical pivot, dragging the Rangdan by the nose while constantly operating in high-risk territory.
"Show us the path." Blazkowicz unclipped a Chaos artifact from his waist and tossed it to Harlan. "Let it reveal a route—a warp fissure that can bypass the Rangdan defensive lines."
Harlan caught the eight-pointed star of Chaos. As he focused his intent, the relic's pointer flared to life, projecting a hidden warp conduit and guiding the fortress forward.
The citadel's automated systems logged the coordinates, turning the Blackstone Fortress toward the roiling currents of the Immaterium until it vanished into the endless tides.
In the warp, the currents churned eternally, a realm of hazards none could fully foresee. However, within the Rangdan Empire, there existed a specialized client race known as the Stargazers, who provided the fundamental basis for the Rangdan's warp navigation capabilities.
The Stargazers possessed an extraordinary anatomy, closely resembling the disembodied eyeballs of some intelligent species. They floated in the void, highly adept in the use of psychic arts. In realspace, these ocular entities could discharge destructive energy beams; when they cast their gaze into the Immaterium, they could peer through the warp's hazards, guiding fleets safely through the currents.
When stationed along defensive perimeters, the Stargazers occupied high spires, watching the warp to prevent sudden ambushes by enemy fleets.
With the Imperium of Man and the Rangdan Empire locked in total war, the Stargazers had been ordered to maintain the highest state of alert across the domain, watching for any sign of warp-borne incursions. As a subjugated species, they loyally executed the dictates of their masters, focusing their collective gaze upon the Immaterium to serve as an early warning system.
Yet today, an uncanny sight met their vision. The visibility within the warp was exceptionally poor.
A massive warp storm was sweeping through the region, blinding their long-range senses. Deep within the tempest, vast swarms of warp entities were fleeing frantically in all directions.
Initially, the Stargazer paid little heed. The tentacles beneath its main body picked up a data slate to log the psychic anomaly, feeding the information into the archive cogitator. The flight of warp beasts did not inherently signal a military threat; it could easily be a migration triggered by the destruction of their native warp habitats.
Furthermore, this location sat deep within the interior of the empire. It was deemed impossible for humans to bypass the early-warning networks, let alone ride the currents of a localized warp storm to mount an invasion.
But what occurred next caused the Stargazer's tentacles to freeze. The data slate slipped from its grasp, shattering against the floor.
Out of the violent tempest, all manner of twisted warp beasts fled for their lives. Though faceless, their contorted movements radiated absolute terror. And right behind them, flanked by billions of crackling warp lightning bolts, a massive black fortress loomed right before its eyes.
"Ene—"
In the next instant, the warning cut short.
Having stared into the warp for too long, the Stargazer failed to blind its senses in time amidst its shock, and its soul was violently torn away by the surging warp entities.
In realspace, without any warning transmitted by the Stargazer, a warp rift suddenly tore open.
"Enemy engagement!" Screams erupted across the communication channels as patrol personnel detected the sudden death of the Stargazer.
The Rangdan soldiers did not know what had slain the watcher, but ahead of the spire, a warp fissure had already stabilized, and energy readings were spiking exponentially.
From the tear, the fury of the warp storm cascaded outward, baring its fangs within the material realm. Unbound lightning crackled violently, triggering a powerful electromagnetic storm that caused technological sensors to fail one after another.
Unnatural fires erupted into existence. Those who cast their eyes upon the profane flames found their vision incinerated, their very souls reduced to ash.
Closest to the rift, a space station began to buckle as structural steel twisted into mutating flesh and sensory organs. In an instant, the installation transformed into a mass of biological horror, opening a gaping maw to roar into the vacuum of space.
With just a single glance, the minds of the Rangdan elites plunged into an absolute abyss. Their sensitive psychic awareness was flooded with an overwhelming torrent of corruptive filth, drowning them entirely within the madness.
