They entered the chalet to find the living area had been transformed into an impromptu magical study space—Sirius's vacation library of twenty-three books arranged systematically on the coffee table, several magical artifacts displayed for educational demonstration purposes, and someone had set up refreshments including hot chocolate and what appeared to be an entire selection of Swiss pastries.

"Welcome back," Pepper greeted from her position near the window where she'd been working on her tablet. "I see you brought your new friend for continued educational discussions."

"This is Hermione Granger," Harry introduced formally. "She's almost eight, remarkably intelligent, recently discovered she has magical abilities, and wants to learn everything possible about magical theory and practical applications before formal education begins next year. Also she has seventeen follow-up questions about quantum field theory."

"Nineteen now," Hermione corrected. "I thought of two more on the walk over."

"Excellent. We'll address those after we cover fundamental magical principles."

"So basically you in female form with eleven months' additional life experience," Sirius observed with obvious amusement from his sprawl in an armchair. "I approve of this friendship already. Two intellectually gifted children collaborating on magical innovation sounds either absolutely brilliant or potentially catastrophic depending on supervision quality."

"Why not both?" Harry asked reasonably. "Brilliant innovations are often initially catastrophic. That's how progress works."

"That's not reassuring," Remus said from nearby.

"It's not meant to be reassuring. It's meant to be accurate."

"We're supervising," Remus assured Sirius despite this exchange. "Though I admit watching two remarkably intelligent children discuss advanced magical theory is considerably more entertaining than most vacation activities I'd anticipated."

Hermione was staring around the chalet with obvious appreciation for what was essentially a mobile magical research facility.

"This is extraordinary," she said with wonder. "You have actual magical artifacts just casually displayed for educational purposes? And an entire library of advanced magical texts available for reference during vacation? Harry wasn't exaggerating about access to extraordinary educational resources."

"Tony believes in supporting intellectual curiosity through unlimited access to relevant materials," Harry explained with obvious pride. "Plus Sirius has an extensive magical library from his family's collection and apparently couldn't resist bringing substantial portions of it for a two-week vacation despite reasonable arguments that twenty-three books represents excessive packing for recreational travel."

"Twenty-three books is not excessive," Sirius protested with wounded dignity. "It's thorough preparation for extended reading opportunities during Alpine winter evenings."

"It's excessive," Remus corrected with gentle amusement. "But it's also completely in character for someone who treats knowledge acquisition as a competitive sport rather than casual leisure activity."

"If knowledge acquisition isn't competitive, you're doing it wrong," Harry said seriously.

"That explains so much about you," Tony muttered.

"Thank you!"

"Still not a compliment."

"Competitive sport sounds accurate," Hermione agreed with obvious appreciation for that particular approach. "I've been known to read fifteen books during standard two-week vacation periods, which my parents consider excessive but I view as optimal resource utilization for extended free time."

"Fifteen books in two weeks is impressive," Harry said with genuine respect. "I managed twelve during my last vacation period, though several were rather technical mathematical texts that required slower processing than narrative literature would have demanded."

"What level mathematics?" Hermione asked with interest.

"Introductory calculus and some differential equations. Nothing too advanced yet, but I'm working up to it."

"You're *seven*."

"Yes, but age is largely irrelevant to mathematical comprehension if you have proper foundational understanding and adequate instructional resources."

"I like you more with every sentence you speak," Hermione announced.

"The feeling is entirely mutual."

"Technical mathematical texts absolutely require slower processing," Hermione confirmed with scholarly authority. "Attempting to speed-read advanced mathematical frameworks results in insufficient comprehension and necessitates multiple re-readings that actually waste more time than careful initial study would have required. False efficiency is worse than honest slowness."

"Yes!" Harry agreed enthusiastically. "That's exactly it! False efficiency is the worst. People keep trying to rush through complex material and then wonder why they don't actually understand it. It's maddening."

"Completely maddening," Hermione agreed. "Proper learning requires time and careful attention. There are no shortcuts to genuine understanding."

Tony had been watching this exchange with an expression suggesting he was both proud of his son finding an intellectual peer and slightly concerned about what two remarkably intelligent children might accomplish when given access to magical reference materials and minimal supervision.

"Right," he said with decision-making tone that suggested establishing ground rules before children accidentally revolutionized magical theory or caused some kind of localized reality distortion. "You two can absolutely continue your discussions and study whatever magical texts seem interesting. But—and this is important—no practical experimentation with magic without explicit adult supervision. Reading about magical theory is fine, attempting to cast spells or manipulate magical energy is prohibited until you have proper instruction. Are we clear?"

"Crystal clear," both children replied in perfect unison with enough synchronization to suggest they'd already established remarkable rapport.

"That was slightly creepy," Sirius observed.

"That was efficient communication," Harry corrected. "There's a difference."

"Also," Pepper added with practical parenting concern, "Hermione needs to go home by six o'clock for family dinner, which means you have approximately four hours of study time before she needs to return. That should be adequate for initial magical education introduction without overwhelming either of you with information overload."

"Four hours is perfect," Hermione said with satisfaction. "Harry, where should we start? Fundamental magical theory? Practical applications? Historical development of magical communities? Comparative analysis of international magical education systems? Examination of the intersection between magical and scientific frameworks?"

"All of the above, but in logical order," Harry replied. "We should start with fundamentals and build systematically rather than jumping around topics randomly like some kind of intellectual pinball game."

"Agreed. Systematic progression is essential for proper understanding."

"I love that you understand that. Most people want to jump straight to 'cool spells' without understanding underlying principles."

"People who prioritize 'cool spells' over theoretical foundations are missing the entire point of magical education."

"EXACTLY."

"Start with the basics," Remus suggested gently, moving toward the coffee table where magical texts had been arranged with systematic organization. "I'd recommend this one—'Introduction to Magical Theory and Practical Foundations.' It's written for young witches and wizards just learning about magic, covers fundamental principles without overwhelming technical complexity, and provides excellent foundation for more advanced study."

He selected a leather-bound volume that appeared considerably less intimidating than some of the other texts in Sirius's vacation library, then settled into a nearby chair with clear intention of remaining available for questions.

"I'll stay here for supervision and to answer questions as they arise," he continued with warm professorial presence. "There are no stupid questions when learning about completely new subject matter, and I promise to provide answers without condescension or unnecessary simplification. You deserve proper explanations, not watered-down versions that assume children can't handle complexity."

"Thank you," Hermione said with genuine gratitude that transcended polite courtesy. "Having access to a qualified instructor willing to answer questions without patronizing simplification represents an extraordinary educational advantage that most Muggleborn children don't receive before formal schooling begins. I really appreciate it."

"Which is exactly why I'm offering," Remus replied with gentle conviction. "Every magical child deserves proper introduction to magical communities and basic theoretical understanding before they're thrust into formal education systems that assume prior knowledge most Muggleborn students haven't had opportunity to acquire. The current system is fundamentally unfair, and I can at least help address that inequity in small ways."

"The current system is rubbish," Harry agreed. "But at least we can work around it through self-directed study and access to qualified instructors willing to answer excessive questions."

"Your questions aren't excessive," Remus said patiently. "They're thorough."

"Some people consider thorough and excessive to be synonyms."

"Those people are wrong."

"I agree, but they're surprisingly common."

As Harry and Hermione settled onto the couch with their selected text, opening it with the kind of reverent care usually reserved for ancient artifacts, the adults in the room exchanged glances suggesting recognition that something significant was developing beyond simple childhood friendship.

"They're going to be absolutely terrifying together," Sirius observed with obvious satisfaction at the prospect. "Two remarkably intelligent children with complementary knowledge bases and shared enthusiasm for systematic magical innovation. Hogwarts isn't going to know what hit it when these two arrive for first year."

"Assuming they both attend Hogwarts," Penny noted with diplomatic caution about international complications. "Hermione's British citizenship means she'll receive a Hogwarts letter, but Harry's situation is considerably more complex given his dual citizenship and family connections to both American and British magical communities."

"We'll figure that out when the time comes," Tony said with confidence born from successfully navigating considerably more complex logistical challenges than educational enrollment. "For now, let's just appreciate that Harry's found someone who shares his particular brand of intellectual intensity and can actually keep up with his enthusiasm for theoretical analysis."

"Keep up?" Sirius said with amusement. "She might actually surpass him. She's got eleven months' additional life experience and seems just as intellectually voracious. This could be healthy competition."

"Harry doesn't do competition," Tony said. "He does collaboration or complete intellectual domination. There's no middle ground."

"I prefer to think of it as 'thorough excellence,'" Harry called from the couch without looking up from the book. "Domination sounds unnecessarily aggressive."

"You're eavesdropping," Tony accused.

"I'm demonstrating superior auditory processing while simultaneously absorbing written information. It's called multitasking."

"It's called being nosy."

"That too."

"Plus," Pepper added warmly, ignoring this exchange, "it's nice to see him making friends with someone his own age rather than just engaging with adults who humor his advanced vocabulary and sophisticated reasoning."

"She's not his own age," Sirius pointed out with aristocratic precision about detail accuracy. "She's eleven months older, which at their ages represents a potentially significant developmental difference."

"Eleven months is irrelevant when you're discussing quantum field theory," Harry said, still not looking up. "Intellectual compatibility transcends chronological age differences."

"How are you following two conversations simultaneously?" Hermione asked with fascination.

"Practice. Also spite. People kept having conversations about me like I couldn't hear them, so I learned to actively listen to multiple discussions while appearing focused on other tasks. It's very useful."

"That's brilliant. Can you teach me?"

"Absolutely. It's mostly about auditory filtering and practice."

"You two are definitely going to be trouble," Remus said with fond resignation.

"We prefer 'intellectually ambitious,'" Harry replied primly.

"That's a very diplomatic way of saying trouble," Sirius observed.

"Thank you!"

"STILL not a compliment."

"I'm aware. I'm choosing to interpret it positively anyway because my self-esteem is excellent."

Hermione laughed—a genuine, delighted sound that suggested she'd found someone who matched her particular brand of precocious intensity.

"Right," she said, turning her attention fully to the book in front of them. "Chapter One: Fundamental Principles of Magical Energy. This looks promising."

"Very promising," Harry agreed. "Though I should warn you, the author has tendency toward unnecessarily florid prose in places. We may need to translate some sections from 'overwrought magical mysticism' into 'actual useful information.'"

"I appreciate the warning. I have limited patience for unnecessary mysticism when straightforward explanation would be more effective."

"We're going to get along brilliantly."

As they bent over the text together, heads close as they examined diagrams and argued cheerfully about interpretations of theoretical frameworks, the adults settled into comfortable observation of what was clearly the beginning of a remarkable friendship.

"Twenty galleons says they're running Hogwarts within three years of enrollment," Sirius said quietly.

"I'm not taking that bet," Remus replied. "That's not even a question. The only question is whether they'll do it through official channels or elaborate systems of their own devising."

"Elaborate systems," Tony said with certainty. "Harry doesn't do official channels if he can avoid them. Too many unnecessary rules."

"Hermione seems like she'd prefer working within established frameworks," Pepper observed.

"Until those frameworks prove inadequate for her purposes," Tony countered. "Then she'll absolutely work around them. She's got that same look Harry gets when he's decided something is inefficient and needs improvement."

"God help us all," Sirius said cheerfully. "Two brilliant children convinced they can improve everything. This is going to be *spectacular*."

On the couch, completely oblivious to adult speculation about their future academic chaos, Harry and Hermione had already moved past the introductory chapter and were engaged in enthusiastic debate about whether magical energy manipulation was more analogous to electromagnetic field theory or quantum mechanical wave functions.

"It can't be purely wave-based," Hermione argued, pointing at a diagram. "The behavior described here suggests particle-like properties under certain conditions. That implies wave-particle duality similar to photons or electrons."

"We probably need access to more advanced texts with actual empirical data."

"Agreed. Remus, do any of these books contain actual experimental data about magical energy behavior rather than just vague mystical descriptions?"

Remus looked up from his own reading with an expression of fond exasperation.

"You've been studying for approximately seven minutes."

"Yes, and we've already identified significant gaps in the foundational text's explanatory framework," Harry replied reasonably. "That seems like efficient problem identification to me."

"Most students take weeks to recognize those gaps."

"Most students aren't trying hard enough," Hermione said with the casual confidence of someone who'd never doubted her own intellectual capabilities. "We're motivated learners with systematic approaches to knowledge acquisition."

"You're insufferable," Sirius said with obvious affection.

"Thank you!" both children replied in perfect unison again.

"That's definitely creepy," Pepper said.

"That's definitely efficient," Harry corrected. "Why waste time with individual responses when synchronized communication conveys the message more effectively?"

"Because it's weird," Tony said.

"Weird but efficient."

"Those aren't mutually exclusive."

"Exactly my point!"

Remus pulled himself out of his chair with the air of someone resigning himself to an afternoon of answering extraordinarily complex questions from extraordinarily bright children.

"All right," he said, selecting another text from Sirius's collection. "This one—'Advanced Theories in Magical Energy Manipulation'—contains more empirical data and less mystical poetry. But I'm warning you now, it's written at NEWT level, which means it assumes knowledge you don't have yet."

"We'll figure it out," Harry said with complete confidence.

"Or ask questions when we encounter terms we don't recognize," Hermione added more diplomatically.

"So many questions," Harry agreed cheerfully. "Prepare yourself for interrogation."

"I'm always prepared for interrogation with you," Remus said with resignation. "It's basically my default state at this point."

As he handed over the more advanced text and settled back to supervise what promised to be an intensive afternoon of magical theory study, Remus couldn't help but smile at the way both children immediately bent over the new book with identical expressions of focused intensity.

Yes, they were going to be absolutely terrifying together.

But they were also going to be *brilliant*.

And really, when it came to magical education and innovation, a bit of terror was probably a small price to pay for genuine brilliance.

Outside, the Swiss Alps stood eternal and unbothered, their peaks catching the afternoon light as two remarkable children began what would become years of collaborative learning, mutual encouragement, and absolutely insufferable intellectual partnership that would drive their future teachers to distraction and probably revolutionize magical theory in the process.

Some friendships were inevitable.

This one was going to change everything.

# Chalet Edelweiss – Tony's Study – 3:15 PM CET

Tony had been watching Harry and Hermione's increasingly animated discussion about magical energy theory with the kind of parental satisfaction that came from seeing your kid genuinely happy, when Pepper appeared in the doorway with her tablet and that particular expression that meant vacation time was officially over.

"Don't give me that look," Tony said preemptively.

"I haven't said anything yet," Pepper replied with perfect innocence that fooled absolutely nobody.

"You don't have to. That's your 'I'm about to remind you about work responsibilities' face. I know that face. I've been avoiding that face for three days."

"Three very productive days of avoiding that face," Pepper agreed. "But unfortunately, the Jericho team has been trying to reach you for approximately eighteen hours, and I've run out of diplomatic ways to explain why the lead developer on the project is currently unavailable due to 'Alpine recreational activities.'"

"That's a perfectly reasonable explanation."

"They think you're skiing."

"I could be skiing."

"You're not skiing. You're supervising two seven-year-olds—"

"One's almost eight," Harry called from the couch without looking up.

"—two children," Pepper corrected, "having theoretical discussions about quantum magical physics or whatever impossibility they're currently debating."

"Quantum magical field theory," Hermione clarified helpfully. "We've moved past basic energy manipulation into discussion of potential fundamental force interactions."

"See? Educational supervision," Tony said. "Very important parenting work."

"And yet, somehow the Jericho team remains unconvinced that parenting work excuses you from the video conference you scheduled for today," Pepper said with the kind of patient firmness that had successfully managed Tony Stark for years. "You know, the conference you personally requested? About the targeting system modifications you insisted needed your direct input?"

Tony groaned with the dramatic suffering of someone being forced to do something he'd literally scheduled himself.

"I hate responsible past-me," he muttered. "Past-me is terrible at considering future-me's preferences."

"Past-you is why present-you has a functional company," Pepper pointed out. "Also, past-you specifically told me to 'make sure I don't skip this one even if I complain,' so really you have only yourself to blame."

"Past-me is a traitor."

"Past-you was realistic about present-you's tendencies."

"Remus, can you please explain to Pepper that abandoning children during critical educational moments is irresponsible parenting?" Tony appealed to the werewolf, who was watching this exchange with obvious amusement.

"I think the children are fine," Remus replied diplomatically. "They've got three adults supervising them, access to age-appropriate educational materials, and sufficient snacks to prevent low blood sugar crankiness. You're cleared for temporary departure."

"Betrayed by my own magical consultant," Tony said tragically. "This is what I get for providing excellent Alpine accommodations."

"The accommodations are lovely," Remus agreed. "Which is why I'm happy to supervise your son while you handle necessary business communications."

"How long?" Tony asked Pepper with resignation.

"They've estimated ninety minutes for comprehensive review of the modifications, though knowing you, you'll probably derail into tangential improvements and extend it to two hours."

"That's not derailing, that's iterative innovation."

"That's derailing," Pepper corrected. "But fine, call it iterative innovation if it makes you feel better about your inability to stay on topic."

"I stay perfectly on topic. I just have very expansive definitions of what constitutes relevant topic areas."

"That's definitely derailing."

Tony looked over at Harry, who had finally looked up from his intense study session with Hermione, both children watching the adult conversation with interest.

"You good here for a couple hours?" Tony asked. "I've got work stuff that apparently can't wait despite being on vacation in the Swiss Alps surrounded by actual magic and theoretical impossibilities."

"We're fine," Harry assured him. "We've got Remus for questions, Sirius for entertainment, and approximately four more chapters of theoretical frameworks to argue about. Plus Hermione's teaching me her system for organizing research notes, which is honestly superior to my current methodology."

"Color coding is essential for efficient information retrieval," Hermione said seriously. "I don't understand why more people don't utilize systematic organizational frameworks."

"Because most people lack commitment to proper academic methodology," Harry replied. "It's tragic, really."

"You two are definitely going to run the world someday," Tony observed. "Possibly through elaborate color-coded systems and superior organizational frameworks."

"That's the plan," Harry agreed cheerfully.

"Terrifying. Absolutely terrifying." Tony pushed himself up from his chair. "Right, I'm going to go deal with weapons development because apparently even billionaire geniuses can't escape conference calls. Remus, if anything explodes or catches fire—"

"Nothing's going to explode," Remus interrupted patiently. "They're reading about theory, not conducting practical experiments."

"Yet," Sirius added helpfully from his armchair. "They're not conducting practical experiments *yet*. The day is young."

"Not helping," Remus told him.

"Wasn't trying to."

"If anything seems even remotely problematic, come get me immediately," Tony continued, ignoring this byplay. "I don't care if I'm mid-sentence explaining targeting algorithms. Kid safety trumps everything."

"Obviously," Remus agreed. "Though I promise, we're just reading and discussing. Very safe activities."

"Reading and discussing," Harry repeated innocently. "The most dangerous thing we might do is develop revolutionary theoretical frameworks that challenge established magical paradigms."

"That's not physically dangerous though," Hermione added. "Just intellectually threatening to people invested in maintaining traditional approaches."

"You two are the worst," Tony said with obvious affection. "Pepper, lead me to the technological responsibilities I'm apparently unable to escape."

Tony's study was considerably quieter than the main living area—Pepper had efficiently set up the video conferencing equipment with the kind of smooth competence that made complicated technology look effortless. The large monitor displayed the Stark Industries logo while the system connected to the secure channel the Jericho development team used for classified communications.

"Coffee?" Pepper offered, gesturing to the machine she'd apparently had installed in the study specifically for these kinds of situations.

"You're a goddess among mortals," Tony said with genuine gratitude. "Have I mentioned recently that you're the only thing preventing my life from descending into complete chaos?"

"Not recently enough," Pepper replied, but she was smiling as she prepared his coffee exactly how he liked it—which she'd memorized years ago despite his preferences changing approximately every six months.

"Worth a try."

The monitor flickered as the connection established, and suddenly Tony was looking at the familiar conference room in Stark Industries' weapons development division. Six people sat around the table—his lead engineers on the Jericho project, all of whom looked varying degrees of stressed about whatever problems had necessitated dragging their boss away from vacation.

"Stark," Dr. Ellen Rodriguez greeted him with visible relief. She was his head of ballistics, brilliant engineer who'd been with the company for fifteen years and had absolutely no patience for unnecessary drama. "Thanks for making time. I know you're technically on vacation."

"Technically," Tony agreed, settling into his chair with coffee. "Though apparently 'vacation' is a flexible concept when you're trying to revolutionize missile guidance systems. What's the problem?"

"Several problems," Rodriguez replied, pulling up technical schematics on the screen. "First, the targeting modifications you specified are working beautifully in simulation—we're seeing ninety-eight percent accuracy improvement over previous generation systems. But when we moved to live testing, we hit complications."

Tony leaned forward, immediately focused despite being several thousand miles away from the actual development facility. "What kind of complications?"

"The improved precision is causing cascade failures in the proximity sensors," James Park explained. He was younger than Rodriguez, brilliant software engineer who specialized in weapons integration systems. "Basically, we made the targeting so accurate that it's overwhelming the existing sensor arrays with data they weren't designed to process at that speed."

"Mark IX processors add significant cost to each unit," pointed out Michael Chen, the project's financial analyst who attended these meetings specifically to remind everyone that brilliant engineering had to work within budgetary constraints. "We're talking approximately forty thousand dollars per missile."

"Forty thousand per missile to ensure it actually hits its target instead of failing catastrophically mid-flight seems like reasonable investment," Tony countered. "Besides, the improved accuracy means fewer missiles needed per engagement, which actually reduces overall operational costs despite higher per-unit expense."

"He's not wrong," Rodriguez admitted. "Though we'll need to run the numbers to confirm the cost-benefit analysis supports that claim."

"Run the numbers," Tony agreed. "But I'm confident the math works out. What else?"

"Secondary issue is integration with existing launch systems," Park continued, pulling up more technical diagrams. "The modified guidance requires real-time data feed from satellite reconnaissance, which means we need upgraded communication protocols for older launch platforms."

"How old are we talking?"

"Some of the systems we're trying to integrate with are fifteen years old. They're using communication standards that predate modern encryption requirements."

Tony made a face. "So we're trying to interface cutting-edge precision guidance with technology that's older than some of the engineers on this call."

"Essentially, yes."

"That's a nightmare," Tony said bluntly. "But it's a solvable nightmare. We need backwards-compatibility adapters—essentially translation layers that let the new guidance systems talk to old launch platforms without compromising security or performance. Park, you've done similar work on the Hammer integration project, right?"

"I have," Park confirmed. "Though that was considerably less complex than what we're discussing here."

"Same principle, bigger scale," Tony said with confidence. "Draft the adapter specifications based on the Hammer work, then we'll review and modify for the Jericho requirements. Should be straightforward engineering—tedious but not technically complicated."

"Straightforward for you maybe," Rodriguez said with dry amusement. "Some of us actually find integration protocols challenging."

"That's why you have me," Tony replied cheerfully. "To make complicated things sound straightforward and then leave you to figure out the actual implementation details."

"That's definitely your management style," Rodriguez agreed. "Third issue—and this is the big one—we're getting concerning feedback from the Air Force liaison about potential ethical implications of the precision improvements."

Tony's expression shifted from amused to serious. "Ethical implications. Explain."

Rodriguez exchanged glances with her colleagues before continuing. "Essentially, the improved targeting accuracy makes the Jericho system precise enough to hit specific vehicles, buildings, even individual rooms within structures. The liaison is concerned that this level of precision in a weapon system this powerful could be used for targeted assassinations rather than legitimate military operations."

"A weapon system that can reliably hit a specific office in a specific building in a specific city becomes a different kind of tool than area-effect weaponry. It crosses lines between military and intelligence applications."

Tony was quiet for a moment, his expression unreadable. When he spoke, his voice was measured.

"The entire point of precision guidance is to reduce collateral damage," he said carefully. "To allow military operations that minimize civilian casualties and unnecessary destruction. Making weapons more accurate isn't ethically problematic—it's ethically imperative."

"The liaison doesn't disagree with that principle," Rodriguez said. "But they're concerned about mission creep—about a precision strike system being repurposed for operations it wasn't designed for."

"Every weapon system can be misused," Tony countered. "That's not an engineering problem, that's a policy and oversight problem. We build the best possible technology, with the understanding that there are protocols, rules of engagement, and oversight mechanisms governing its deployment. If those systems are inadequate, that needs to be addressed through policy reform, not by deliberately building inferior weapons."

"I'm not disagreeing with you," Rodriguez said calmly. "I'm just telling you what concerns have been raised. The liaison wants assurances that the Jericho system includes safeguards against potential misuse."

"What kind of safeguards?"

"Authorization protocols that require multiple levels of approval for precision strikes. Usage logging that creates permanent records of every deployment. Geographic restrictions that prevent use in certain regions without explicit executive authorization. Basically, administrative controls that make it harder to misuse the system."

Tony considered this, turning his coffee cup absently while his brain worked through implications.

"Those are reasonable safeguards," he admitted. "I'm not opposed to building in administrative controls if they actually prevent misuse without compromising legitimate operational effectiveness. Park, can you work with the liaison to develop authorization protocols that meet their requirements?"

"I can," Park confirmed. "Though it'll add development time to the project timeline."

"Add the time," Tony said decisively. "If we're building weapons systems with this level of capability, we have responsibility to ensure they include reasonable safeguards. Better to delay deployment by a few months than to rush out technology that could be easily misused."

Chen was making notes on his tablet. "That's going to impact our delivery commitments to the Air Force."

"The Air Force will understand," Tony replied. "And if they don't, they can take their concerns to someone who cares more about arbitrary timelines than about building ethical weapons systems. Which is not me."

"Noted," Chen said with a slight smile.

"What else?" Tony asked. "Please tell me that's the last major issue, because I'm supposed to be on vacation and I'd like to at least maintain the illusion of recreational leisure."

"One more thing," Rodriguez said, pulling up performance simulations. "The improved accuracy is creating phenomenal results in testing, but we're concerned about performance degradation under adverse conditions. The system works beautifully in clear weather with good satellite coverage, but we haven't adequately tested scenarios with heavy cloud cover, electronic interference, or compromised satellite communications."

"So we need comprehensive adverse conditions testing," Tony said immediately. "Which should have been part of the original testing protocol, by the way. Who approved testing plans that didn't include worst-case scenarios?"

There was an uncomfortable silence.

"Right," Tony said with resignation. "That would be me. Past-me is terrible at comprehensive planning."

"Past-you was focused on basic functionality validation," Rodriguez said diplomatically. "Which is reasonable for initial testing phases."

"Past-me was cutting corners," Tony corrected. "Current-me is annoyed about it. Future-me will probably be similarly annoyed when we discover additional problems we should have anticipated. This is why I shouldn't be allowed to approve my own testing protocols."

"You're the CEO and lead developer," Chen pointed out. "Who else would approve testing protocols?"

"Someone with better judgment and more patience for thorough methodology," Tony replied. "Unfortunately, that person doesn't exist in this organization, so we're stuck with my occasionally inadequate planning. Rodriguez, develop comprehensive adverse conditions testing protocols—I want simulations of every possible worst-case scenario you can imagine. Weather, electronic warfare, satellite failures, GPS jamming, everything."

"That's going to be extensive testing," Rodriguez warned.

"Good. Extensive testing prevents expensive failures in operational deployment. I'll sign off on whatever budget and timeline requirements you need to do it properly."

"Even if it delays delivery by six months?"

"Even if it delays delivery by six months," Tony confirmed. "We're not shipping weapons systems that fail under realistic combat conditions just to meet arbitrary deadlines. The Air Force wants reliable technology, not fast technology. They'll wait."

Rodriguez looked satisfied with that answer. "All right. I think that covers the major issues we needed your input on. Unless anyone else has urgent concerns?"

The other engineers shook their heads, looking considerably less stressed than they had at the start of the meeting.

"Excellent," Tony said. "Then I'm officially returning to my vacation, which involves supervising small children having theoretical discussions about impossible physics. Park, send me the adapter specifications once you've got initial drafts. Rodriguez, I want to see the adverse conditions testing protocols before you implement them. Chen, update the timeline projections accounting for the safeguards development and extended testing, then send them to Pepper for review."

"Will do," Chen confirmed.

"Anything else?" Tony asked. "Last chance to trap me in technical discussions before I escape back to recreational supervision duties."

"We're good," Rodriguez confirmed. "Enjoy the rest of your vacation, Stark."

"I plan to," Tony replied. "I'll be available by email if urgent issues arise, but please try not to have urgent issues. I'm supposed to be on vacation."

"We'll do our best," Rodriguez promised with a smile.

The connection terminated, leaving Tony staring at the blank screen with his now-cold coffee.

"That went well," Pepper observed from the doorway.

"It went fine," Tony agreed. "Though I'm annoyed at past-me for inadequate testing protocols and future-me is probably going to be annoyed about something current-me is failing to anticipate properly."

"The eternal cycle of Tony Stark being frustrated with other versions of Tony Stark," Pepper said with amusement.

"It's a real problem. I should invent time travel just so I can go yell at past-me about better planning."

"Please don't invent time travel just to yell at yourself. That sounds like a catastrophically bad idea."

"You're probably right," Tony admitted. "Though it would be satisfying."

He stood, stretching after ninety minutes of sitting still—which was approximately eighty-five minutes longer than he preferred for any single activity.

"Right," he said decisively. "Back to the important work of supervising brilliant children having theoretical discussions about impossible physics. Much more interesting than missile guidance systems."

"Both are important," Pepper corrected gently. "You're allowed to care about multiple things simultaneously."

"I know," Tony said, more seriously. "I just... I spent decades building weapons. Really good weapons. And I'm still doing it, because apparently I can't stop being good at things I'm good at. But now I've also got a kid who can do actual magic, and honestly? The magic is more interesting. More potential. More possibility for genuine innovation rather than just better ways to blow things up."

"You can do both," Pepper said firmly. "Build better weapons that minimize harm while supporting your son's magical education. They're not mutually exclusive."

"I know," Tony repeated. "Doesn't mean I don't feel weird about it sometimes."

"Feeling weird about building weapons that kill people is probably healthy," Pepper pointed out. "It means you're thinking about ethical implications rather than just engineering challenges."

"When did you become my moral compass?"

"Approximately fifteen years ago when you hired me," Pepper replied. "I believe the job description included 'preventing Tony Stark from making catastrophically bad decisions' as a core responsibility."

"Best hiring decision I ever made," Tony said with genuine warmth. "Come on. Let's go see what revolutionary theoretical frameworks the children have developed while I was dealing with boring missile modifications."

They headed back toward the main living area, where the sounds of animated discussion suggested that Harry and Hermione were still deeply engaged in their magical education session.

"Twenty bucks says they've moved past basic theory into speculative applications," Tony said.

"Not taking that bet," Pepper replied. "That's not even a question."

"Smart woman."

"That's why you hired me."

As they entered the living area, they found Harry and Hermione surrounded by approximately six open books, furiously scribbling notes while Remus attempted to moderate a debate about whether magical energy manipulation could theoretically interface with electromagnetic fields to create hybrid magical-technological systems.

"We're back," Tony announced. "And I see the educational supervision has evolved into speculative theoretical innovation. Right on schedule."

"Harry thinks magical energy could be channeled through conductive materials to create permanent enchantments on electronic devices," Hermione explained excitedly. "Which would solve the problem of magic interfering with technology by creating intentional integration rather than accidental interference."

"That's brilliant," Tony said immediately, his engineering brain already jumping ahead to implications. "Also probably incredibly dangerous and requiring extensive testing, but brilliant."

"We're not planning to test anything," Harry assured him. "Just developing theoretical frameworks for potential future experimentation under proper supervision."

"Good," Tony said. "Because I just spent ninety minutes discussing weapons safety protocols and I'd rather not immediately follow that with discussions about my son accidentally electrocuting himself through experimental magical-technological integration."

"That's a very specific concern," Harry observed.

"It's a very reasonable concern given your demonstrated enthusiasm for theoretical innovation," Tony countered. "But I'm glad you're having fun and learning things. That's the point of educational vacation."

"Best vacation ever," Harry agreed cheerfully, returning to his notes.

Tony settled back into his observation position, watching his son collaborate with his new friend on revolutionary theoretical frameworks that would probably give their future teachers stress headaches.

Yeah, he thought with satisfaction.

Definitely the best vacation ever.
