Chapter 70 - The Ones Above

Chapter 71 — The Ones Above

The crack did not spread.

It deepened.

What hung above them was not a tear in space, not a distortion, not even an opening.

It was an absence.

A place where reality simply stopped being enough.

John stared upward, his body refusing to move, not because he was restrained—but because something inside him understood.

This was not something meant to be faced.

Scar stood beside him, his aura flickering again, not from instability, but from rejection.

"…this pressure…" Scar muttered.

"It's not power."

John's voice came low.

"…it's authority."

The man behind them said nothing.

For the first time since the battle began, he had stepped back completely.

No longer part of the fight.

Only a witness.

The crack above shifted.

Not widening.

Not breaking.

Just… focusing.

As if something beyond it had turned its attention directly toward them.

John felt it instantly.

A gaze.

Not physical.

Not visible.

But absolute.

His breath tightened.

"…it's looking at us."

Scar clenched his fists.

"…then let it."

But even he didn't sound certain.

The man finally spoke.

"You should be careful."

John didn't look at him.

"…why?"

A pause.

"Because being seen by them… is not the same as being noticed by an enemy."

Silence.

The weight in the air changed again.

Not heavier.

Clearer.

More defined.

As if everything unnecessary had been stripped away.

Only existence remained.

Only truth.

Only… judgment.

Then—

A voice.

Not loud.

Not quiet.

Not near.

Not far.

It didn't travel.

It simply appeared.

"Two variables… confirmed."

John's eyes widened.

Scar's body tensed.

The man lowered his head slightly.

Respect.

Not fear.

Respect.

"They can speak…?" John whispered.

The man answered calmly.

"They always could."

The voice continued.

"Deviation from projected outcome… significant."

The air trembled.

Not from force.

From recognition.

Scar stepped forward.

"…show yourself."

Silence.

Then—

"Unnecessary."

The answer came instantly.

Cold.

Absolute.

John's fists tightened.

"…then why are you here?"

A pause.

Longer this time.

As if the question itself required consideration.

"Observation."

The word echoed through everything.

Not as sound.

As fact.

Scar's eyes hardened.

"…we're not your experiment."

No response.

Not immediately.

Then—

"Incorrect."

The space shifted.

Not violently.

Not forcefully.

Just enough to make the truth undeniable.

"You were always part of the system."

John stepped forward despite the weight pressing against him.

"…then we'll break that too."

Silence.

Then—

For the first time—

Something changed.

Not around them.

Above them.

The crack pulsed.

Once.

A response.

"Statement acknowledged."

John's breathing steadied.

Scar's aura sharpened again.

For a brief moment—

It felt like they had pushed back.

But then—

The voice continued.

"Outcome… improbable."

Reality trembled.

Scar smirked slightly.

"…good."

John nodded once.

"Then watch closely."

The air grew still again.

Not calm.

Waiting.

Then—

The man behind them spoke once more.

"They won't stop you."

John glanced back.

"…why?"

"Because this is what they want."

A pause.

"They want to see how far you go."

Scar's expression darkened.

"…and when we reach the end?"

Silence.

The man didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"They decide if you should exist beyond it."

The words landed heavier than anything before.

John looked up again.

At the crack.

At the presence beyond it.

His eyes no longer shook.

No fear.

No hesitation.

Only resolve.

"…then we don't stop."

Scar stepped beside him.

"…we don't fall."

The voice above remained silent.

Watching.

Measuring.

Waiting.

And for the first time—

John understood.

This wasn't a fight anymore.

Not just a war.

Not revenge.

Not survival.

This—

Was a challenge.

Against something that defined existence itself.

And they had just stepped into it.

To be continued…
