The pendant went cold.
Not scalding. Just cold, brief, the way Natalia did it when she wanted me to know she'd noticed and was choosing not to make it a whole thing.
Skylar caught it. She grinned, and for the first time in twelve hours it reached her eyes.

"Good." She headed for the door. Paused with her hand on the frame. "Hey."
"Yeah."
"Six people stood in front of that door," she said, not turning around. "Remember that on Sunday. When your mom asks you what you are. You didn't walk through it, and it wasn't because you're good. It's because we were in the way." She pulled the door open. "Which is worse for you, honestly. Being good is easy. Being ours is a full time job."
She went inside.
