Chapter 697: Captain Obito, Are You Sober?
Early the next morning, Obito woke up, ate breakfast, and hurried toward Training Ground Two.
Along the way, whenever he encountered an elderly villager who needed help, he created a Shadow Clone to assist them while his main body continued toward the training ground.
After all, he was the one who had asked Kakashi and Rin for help.
As the person who arranged everything, how could he possibly arrive late?
Thanks to getting up early and rushing over, Obito successfully reached the training ground while it was still empty, accomplishing his first goal of the day.
About six or seven minutes later, Izumo Kamizuki, Kotetsu Hagane, and the others began arriving one after another.
"Good morning, Captain Obito. You're here really early today," Kotetsu greeted him.
Ninja squads normally had fixed meeting times, so everyone usually arrived around the same time.
"Not bad. I am the captain, after all," Obito replied with a nod.
Before long, all three of his squad members had arrived.
Kakashi and Rin had not shown up yet, but that was not because they were late.
Obito had deliberately given them a later meeting time.
"Captain Obito, which ninja did you find to teach us Ninjutsu?" Kotetsu asked expectantly.
Ishizaka Yoshio did not even use Lightning Release, much less know how to teach Kotetsu powerful Lightning Release Ninjutsu.
Naturally, Kotetsu was extremely excited about the reward Obito had promised.
"You're all my future Hokage Guard Platoon members. How could I possibly treat you badly?" Obito said proudly, patting Kotetsu on the shoulder.
"The person I found is definitely a powerful jonin. Even across the entire Ninja World, he can be considered one of the top elites. His skill in Lightning Release is beyond question."
Kotetsu's eyes immediately lit up.
Although thinking this felt somewhat unfair to Ishizaka Yoshio, Kotetsu had to admit that, as a captain, Obito was currently much cooler.
He had no doubts about Obito possessing connections like that.
Obito himself was a famous super genius, a member of the Uchiha, Konoha's strongest clan, and also a direct disciple of the Hokage.
Kakashi had just arrived at the training ground when he happened to hear Obito's speech.
"Of course, his strength is still a little below mine, but he can definitely be considered an expert in Lightning Release," Obito added with a chuckle.
Kakashi immediately revealed an expression that said he had expected nothing less.
So that was why Obito had praised him so highly.
It was purely to elevate himself afterward.
Still, there was technically nothing wrong with Obito's words.
At present, Kakashi truly could not defeat him.
Of course, facts were facts.
That did not mean Kakashi had to feel happy about hearing them.
"It's Senior Kakashi!"
Izumo happened to notice Kakashi approaching and exclaimed in surprise.
If Obito was the unforgettable genius of their own first year at the Ninja Academy, then Kakashi was practically a legendary genius to them.
Kakashi had entered the Ninja Academy at five years old and graduated at five.
By the time Kakashi graduated, Izumo and the others were still only two year old children.
Although they had never attended the Academy alongside him, Kakashi had left behind so many legends that his name had become deeply engraved in their memories.
Kotetsu's grin nearly stretched from ear to ear.
Although Kakashi was most famous for his Lightning Release swordsmanship, mastering powerful Lightning Release sword techniques naturally required extraordinary Lightning Release skill.
Besides, it was not as if Kotetsu could never learn swordsmanship himself.
"Oh, it's all of you. Anko, long time no see," Rin greeted them with a smile.
Rin was not unfamiliar with Anko, Kotetsu, and Izumo.
When Mugetsu had conducted special training at the Ninja Academy, it had not been limited to the graduating fourth year students.
Outstanding first year students had also been allowed to participate, and Anko and the others had all been among them.
"It really has been a while. Let's go eat dango together sometime," Anko replied enthusiastically.
"So Senior Rin must be the one teaching me," Izumo quickly concluded.
He glanced at Kotetsu with a little envy.
Rin was certainly not an ordinary Konoha jonin, but when compared to Kakashi, there was still a considerable gap.
Moreover, Rin was far more famous for Medical Ninjutsu than Water Release.
Rumor had it that she had inherited Tsunade's true teachings, and her medical abilities were impressive enough to make even experienced veteran medical jonin feel inferior.
Seeing two of his squad members and future Hokage guards praising Kakashi so highly, Obito immediately turned toward him.
"Kakashi, even though you lost to me in our last battle, don't get discouraged. Keep working hard and maybe you'll still have a chance to catch up with me."
Kakashi stared at him.
What did that have to do with anything?
"As expected of Captain Obito. That must have been an incredible battle. It's a shame I couldn't watch it personally," Izumo said, generously giving Obito the reaction he wanted.
Obito smiled in satisfaction.
"It's fine. There'll always be another chance in the future."
"Which one of you is learning Lightning Release from me?" Kakashi asked, looking at Kotetsu and the others.
He was not particularly familiar with the three of them and had no idea what techniques they currently knew.
"Senior Kakashi, it's me," Kotetsu immediately stepped forward.
"Study seriously. If you perform well, I have a mysterious reward for you," Kakashi said with a faint smile.
"As expected of Senior Kakashi, the ninja known as Lightning Fang! Actually, I've been your fan since the day I was born!" Kotetsu exclaimed excitedly.
Being personally taught by Kakashi was already a reward from Obito.
Now Kakashi was offering another reward on top of it.
This was a reward stacked on another reward.
"What kind of reward? Can I have one too?" Anko asked curiously.
"A very interesting photograph. If you want one, I can give you a copy too," Kakashi replied leisurely.
Obito's expression changed dramatically.
"Squad member Kotetsu, I'm not trying to lecture you, but ninja training is about strengthening yourself and protecting the Village. Chasing rewards will only tarnish the purity of your dreams," Obito said with a solemn expression.
Kotetsu looked confused.
What Obito said seemed reasonable.
But had Obito himself not offered them rewards only a few days ago?
Captain Obito, are you sober?
"Squad member Anko, the same applies to you. We, the ninja of Team Six, must put an end to this unhealthy practice! We must preserve the purity of training!" Obito continued with righteous indignation.
Anko thought about the dango Obito had returned to her before and nodded seriously.
"Obito, what you said makes a lot of sense," Kakashi agreed with a nod. "Then I won't use the photo as a reward. I'll simply give everyone a copy directly."
As he spoke, Kakashi reached toward his ninja tool pouch.
Whoosh!
Obito exploded forward with terrifying speed and grabbed Kakashi's hand before he could pull anything out.
"So, Kakashi, you still had something you wanted to discuss with me, right? Let's go talk over there. We shouldn't disturb Rin while she's teaching."
Obito concentrated his breathing to the extreme and dragged Kakashi away.
Anko scratched her head.
"How strange. I always feel like Captain Obito and Senior Kakashi are silently communicating about a bunch of things we know nothing about."
It felt like she had accidentally skipped several pages of a novel and suddenly could no longer understand what the characters were talking about.
"That's just how those two are. They have a very good relationship," Rin explained with a smile.
"I see."
Anko revealed an enlightened expression.
She still had absolutely no idea what Obito and Kakashi had just been talking about.
On the other side, Obito dragged Kakashi behind a large tree.
Kakashi looked at him with a smile.
"What's wrong, Captain Obito? Worried that your glorious image might be ruined?"
"There were too many people over there just now, Kakashi. I apologize. I shouldn't have kept saying you were weaker than me or bringing up the fact that you lost to me."
Obito clasped his hands together and looked at Kakashi with an extremely sincere expression.
Meanwhile, inside his heart, he had already sentenced Kakashi to death countless times.
"When I become Hokage, every white haired person in the Village will have to take a written test every single day!"
That photograph had already been used to threaten him far too many times.
This white haired bastard was not merely evil.
He was catastrophically evil.
He had to be dealt with severely.
"Let's forget about the photo. Anko and the others hate looking at photographs. They really can't stand that kind of thing."
While mentally executing Kakashi, Obito's mouth continued working desperately.
"Is that so? Then they probably need desensitization training. If something goes wrong during a mission because of it, that would be troublesome," Kakashi replied with the same smile.
"I'll add another hundred thousand ryō to the teaching fee!" Obito finally offered through gritted teeth.
That was one hundred thousand ryō.
With only a little more money, he could buy himself a brand new high quality camera.
"Now that I think about it, using a photograph as a reward really isn't very appropriate," Kakashi immediately changed his tone.
He had never genuinely planned to spread the photograph anyway.
Watching Obito's pained expression was simply too amusing.
And so, a satisfied Kakashi and a painfully smiling Obito returned to the team.
"Show me your strongest Lightning Release Ninjutsu," Kakashi told Kotetsu.
Since he had agreed to teach him, Kakashi naturally intended to do so seriously.
He was not going to disgrace Teacher Mugetsu.
"Lightning Release: Electric Shockwave!"
Kotetsu nodded, rapidly formed hand seals, and gathered chakra into both palms.
The instant the seals were completed, all of the gathered chakra transformed into Lightning Release chakra.
Crackle! Crackle!
Yellow lightning rapidly covered Kotetsu's palms.
A bolt of electricity shot from one hand and struck the wooden dummy ten meters away, leaving two scorched marks across its surface.
Kakashi immediately gained a rough understanding of Kotetsu's current Lightning Release proficiency.
However, he did not begin teaching immediately.
Instead, Kakashi tested him several more times before finally deciding which technique would suit him best.
"The Ninjutsu I'm going to teach you is called Lightning Release: Violent Lightning Spear. It's a B Rank Lightning Release technique developed by Teacher Mugetsu," Kakashi explained.
He would have been willing to teach Kotetsu False Darkness or Purple Lightning, but both techniques consumed too much chakra.
At Kotetsu's current level, he simply could not use them properly.
The moment Kotetsu heard that it was a B Rank Lightning Release Ninjutsu, and one personally developed by Mugetsu at that, his head began nodding so quickly that he resembled a chick pecking at grain.
The only B Rank technique he currently knew was the Shadow Clone Technique.
As for Lightning Release, he only knew one C Rank technique and one D Rank technique.
On the other side, after careful consideration, Rin decided to teach Izumo the Raging Current Bundle, another technique developed by Mugetsu.
The Water Release technique possessed considerable power without consuming much chakra.
Its greatest demand was precise chakra shape transformation.
If Izumo successfully mastered it, the technique would remain useful even after he became a jonin.
If trained deeply enough, it could serve as one of his trump cards for the rest of his career.
At first, Izumo had been somewhat envious of Kotetsu.
However, once Rin began teaching him, he quickly realized that she was much stronger than he had imagined.
She was more than qualified to instruct him.
Soon, Izumo completely immersed himself in training.
As for Anko, Obito chose to teach her Flame Vortex.
The technique had both an impressive attack range and respectable power, while also being useful in a supporting role.
