Chapter 56 - Vol 1.5: Side Story Chapter B : Senju's Decision

Year 16

Senju Residence, Council Chamber.

The chamber was dimly lit and its air thick with smoke of burning incense and tension. Scrolls lined the walls, and a large circular table sat at the center carved from ancient cedar. Around it sat the pillars of the Senju clan: Tobirama, Hashirama, Mito, and the three grand elders – Genshiro, Ayame, and Borai.

Tobirama stood with his arms folded, his voice steady and deliberate. He did not beat around the bushes at all.

"We must disband seventy percent of our clan into civilian roles and form new branch families. Let them take new names. This is the only way to prove to the village and the clans that Konoha is not a kingdom ruled by Senju. And it is the only way to prevent Konoha from falling apart from within."

The silence that followed was deafening.

Hashirama and Mito closed their eyes in quiet agreement, already aware of Tobirama's suggestion. The elders… they widened their eyes and exchanged glances, disbelief etched into their expressions.

Genshiro, the oldest, leaned forward as shadow encased his face. His voice was low and sharp tinged with restrained anger.

"You would fracture the clan? Dilute our strength? For what? For some intangible political ideal?"

Tobirama replied calmly as he gestured with his hand.

"It's not simple. We live in new era now. We must–"

Ayame cut him off with a scoff.

"The Uchiha are consolidating. Madara may be gone, but they are not. And you want to weaken ourselves while they gather strength?"

Tobirama's tone sharpened.

"The Uchiha are weak and retreating, not to mention the fact that we subtly pushed them away from Konoha's crucial positions…"

Borai, the youngest but fiercely traditional, slammed his fist on the table.

"This Is Madness! WE are the backbone of Konoha. We built this village. We bled the most for it. And now you want us to scatter like leaves?"

Tobirama's patience ran thin, but his voice remained firm.

"Uncle... We are not scattering. We are evolving. We are no longer in Sengoku Era, where Clan Strength and Clan Unity decide everything. We are no longer competing among clans. We are… no. Konoha is now competing with other hidden villages. Can't you see this bigger picture?"

Genshiro scoffed.

"Tobirama, you and also clan head are still too naïve. Nothing has changed. I won't deny the fact that Konoha is competing with other hidden villages, but even within the village, the clans will always compete. In essence. In core principle of Clan politics and survival, your proposal is downright STUPID."

Ayame and Borai nodded in agreement.

"We reject this proposal."

Tobirama didn't flinch.

"You all make a valid point. But with formation of Iwa, Suna, Kumo, and Kiri. Konoha's strength, stability, and Unity will determine the survival of our clan."

Tobirama spread his arm as he continued. "The village is watching us – judging us. If we continue to act as the ruling clan, we will lose their trust. We will fracture Konoha and weaken it."

But Genshiro and the elders were still unconvinced.

"Then let them doubt. Let them envy." Genshiro spoke in confidence, laced with arrogance. "Konoha is strong because Senju is strong. And We are strong because we are united."

Ayame leaned in.

"I think you've indulged yourself too long in village politics Tobirama. You've lost sight of what matters most. Strength is all that matters. Do you think you'd have any political leverage without the clan leader or the backing of the Senju? If we weaken ourselves, we invite instability."

Borai added, his tone sharp.

"Tobirama, think this through again. What future are you planning for our descendants? What injustice would it be for them to grow up without the Senju name? What would they become without the pride of their lineage?"

Tobirama's eyes narrowed.

"Pride without purpose is poison. The Senju name should mean more than privilege. It should become the symbol and pillar of Konoha. One that unites the village, but at thi–"

Genshiro's voice rose mixed with anger and hint of disgust.

"UNITY? BY Division?"

He stood, his aged body still radiating strength. He raised his head to meet Tobirama's eyes.

"I understand where you are coming from. Respect is earned through actions, but there is one important prerequisite. Strength! In this cruel world, without strength, kindness and mercy is nothing but weakness."

Tobirama instinctively flinched, Genshiro, Ayame, and Borai had once been his and Hashirama's mentors. But he had anticipated such resistance from these stubborn old fools and steeled himself.

"{And a weakness that will be exploited by our enemies and rivals.}, I haven't forgotten your teachings."

Tobirama stepped forward, locking his eyes with Genshiro's, not in defeat or in defiance, but with conviction. He argued back as he curled his hands into a fist.

"Strength is essential. That's universal truth. Right now, we hold overwhelming advantage, mostly because of my brother. But how long will that last?"

The elders furrowed their brows, they knew that Hashirama is an exception among Senju, just as Madara was among the Uchiha. They did not stop Tobirama, instead silently urged Tobirama to continue.

"If we want to maintain Senju's strength and Konoha's unity, we need absolute strength, much like brother here; someone who cannot be defeated even by the combined power of the village."

Hashirama interjected.

"Tobirama. That's–"

"Anija! Let me finish."

Hashirama lowered his head in mock defeat.

"But we all know that's impossible. Once my brother grows older or passes away, other clans will rise."

Borai scoffed.

"Hah! These clans have no chance against us now, and they won't in the future either!"

But Ayame and Genshiro remained silent.

Tobirama pressed on.

"You are right uncle. I have no doubt that other clans won't have a chance to compete against us in the future. But there is a clan that can compete against us."

Genshiro and Ayame muttered simultaneously.

""The Uchiha.""

Tobirama nodded.

Hashirama massaged his temple, sighing.

"Tobirama. Your views are too extreme when it comes to Uchiha. What have I told you before. Uchiha are also part of Konoha and our family now."

"Anija. We are discussing something serious here."

"Even so this–"

"SHUT UP!"

Hashirama slumped in mock depression.

Tobirama turned back to the elders, who now sat in thoughtful silence. They were familiar with the two brothers' antics and ignored it completely.

"What I'm proposing is radical. I know. But this is a new opportunity."

The elders turned toward him.

"By dispersing our clansmen into the civilian population, we diminish suspicion, but more importantly, we expand our influence silently. Not through dominance, but through integration. That is how the Senju endure."

"""?"""

The elders raised their brows, intrigued but still unconvinced.

Tobirama continued.

"Civilian population, whether shinobi or commoner, is bound to grow larger and eclipse the clan shinobi. They might never produce a Kage-level shinobi, but that's not the point. If our families are mixed among them, and make them think like us, live like us, and practice jutsu like us. Then we will evolve into something larger and more powerful than our current capacity."

The room fell silent again.

But this time, it was a silence of contemplation. The elders exchanged glances, their pride warring with unease. Genshiro's jaw tightened, Ayame's eyes narrowed, and Borai's fist trembled against the cedar table.

Yet none spoke.

What Tobirama was suggesting was not just a solution to current political quagmire but also a risk, a gamble, and a turning point for Senju.

Hashirama finally lifted his head, his voice quiet but firm.

"The Senju were born not from a single bloodline but through unity. If we forget that, then we are no longer Senju."

The chamber fell silent. The incense burned low, as shadows stretched across the walls. For the first time, the elders did not argue. Tobirama's words lingered like a smoke in their minds; it was sharp, bitter, and impossible to ignore.
