Chapter 13 - Chapter 13- A place to breath

Leonard looked around at the exhausted faces surrounding him. Everyone had survived the battle, but the fight had taken more from them than they wanted to admit. Even though their bodies somehow felt stronger and most of their visible injuries had disappeared, their minds were still carrying the weight of everything they had experienced.

"We'll rest for a few days," Leonard finally said. "Let's find a good and safe place first."

Nobody argued.

Everyone simply nodded.

They had been surviving for at least a month, constantly moving from one place to another, never knowing what waited beyond the next tree or across the next river. After the battle with the beast, they needed more than physical recovery. They needed a moment where they could breathe without expecting something to attack them.

So they began searching.

Aarav was still limping slightly, and Manan walked beside him, allowing Aarav to use his shoulder for support. A few steps ahead, Aditya carried Abhimanyu carefully on his back. Abhimanyu was conscious now, but every movement still caused discomfort, so he had no choice but to accept the help.

"Sorry," Abhimanyu muttered.

Aditya chuckled. "Stop apologizing. You're lighter than the backpack I used to carry."

Abhimanyu gave him a tired look. "You're enjoying this, aren't you?"

"Maybe a little," Aditya said.

After walking for nearly an hour, they finally heard the sound of flowing water.

Everyone followed the sound and soon emerged from the thick jungle.

A wide river stretched before them, its clear water flowing peacefully between the trees. Large smooth stones covered parts of the riverbank, while smaller stones glittered beneath the shallow water. Tall trees surrounded the area, creating a natural wall of greenery behind them. Sunlight slipped through the leaves and danced across the surface of the river, while a cool breeze carried the fresh smell of water and forest through the air.

The place felt completely different from the dangerous parts of the jungle they had grown used to.

Riya slowly looked around.

"Wow... this place is beautiful."

"It actually is," Meera agreed, looking toward the river.

Hana smiled. "It feels peaceful."

Ravi placed his hands on his hips and looked around dramatically. "Finally, a place where something isn't trying to eat us."

Aarav glanced at him.

"Give it five minutes. Maybe the river is hungry."

Everyone froze for a second.

Then laughter burst through the group.

Riya covered her mouth while laughing. "Aarav! That was horrible!"

Aarav grinned. "I'm injured. I'm allowed one dark joke."

"You're allowed nothing!"

Riya bent down, grabbed a small stone, and threw it at him.

Aarav quickly moved aside.

"Missed!"

Another stone flew.

"Still missed!"

"Stand still!"

"I can't. I'm too talented."

Riya picked up another stone.

"You're literally limping!"

Aarav dodged again.

"And yet you still can't hit me."

"ARRRGH!"

The others laughed as Riya chased him around the stones while Aarav continued dodging her attacks, his limp making the whole scene even more ridiculous.

"Careful!" Manan called out. "You're going to fall!"

"I'm more worried about Aarav," Riya shouted.

Aarav laughed. "You should worry about your aim!"

Eventually, everyone managed to calm down.

The group decided that this was the place they would stay.

They began preparing their temporary camp. Some gathered dry branches and started a campfire, while others collected thick bushes and strong sticks to create simple boundaries around the area. They didn't want a wall large enough to stop a powerful beast, but it could at least make it harder for smaller creatures to enter unnoticed.

Others began making simple weapons from wood and sharpened stones.

As they worked, something strange slowly became noticeable.

Manan walked toward a fallen tree branch and grabbed it.

"Someone help me move this."

He pulled.

The large wooden log suddenly lifted off the ground.

Manan froze.

Everyone stared.

"...Did I just do that?"

Aditya looked at the log.

"You just lifted that by yourself."

Manan slowly placed it down.

"That was heavy."

Karan walked over and picked up another thick branch.

He raised it with surprising ease.

"What the...?"

Riya tried lifting a large stone.

It came up much easier than she expected.

She stared at it.

"Okay... that's definitely not normal."

Even Aarav noticed the difference in himself despite his injury. His balance felt better, and the strength in his remaining arm seemed greater than before.

Nobody had an explanation.

They remembered the strange changes they had felt that morning.

Maybe whatever had happened during the night had affected all of them.

"Whatever it is," Aditya said, dropping another branch beside the fire, "I'm not complaining."

"Same," Manan replied. "More strength means better chances of surviving."

Everyone silently agreed.

By evening, their small camp was ready.

The fire burned brightly in the center while the river flowed quietly nearby. The simple boundaries surrounded their resting area, and the thick jungle beyond them slowly darkened as the sun disappeared.

Abhimanyu eventually came to sit near the fire with Aditya's support. Aanya immediately noticed him and sat beside him, giving him a gentle smile.

"You should still rest," Aanya said.

"I am resting."

"You're sitting."

"That counts."

Aanya smiled softly and shook her head.

Soon, the conversation turned toward the strange changes they had experienced.

"Our bodies are stronger," Meera said thoughtfully. "And somehow we're recovering faster."

"But why?" Leonard asked.

Nobody knew.

"Maybe it has something to do with that energy," Mateo suggested. "The same energy that healed us."

Abhimanyu looked into the fire.

They still had no idea who those mysterious figures were.

Before the conversation could continue, Ravi suddenly looked down at his clothes.

"Wait."

Everyone looked at him.

"Our clothes."

He stood up and examined his torn shirt.

"These things are barely clothes anymore."

He looked at Abhimanyu.

"You especially look like the beggar who used to stand near my street."

A few boys immediately started laughing.

Ravi pointed toward the girls.

"And don't think you're safe. Look at them. They look like the queens of beggars."

The girls slowly stood up.

Ravi's smile disappeared.

"Uh-oh."

Yuna suddenly ran forward.

She jumped and landed a clean kick against Ravi, sending him stumbling backward.

"HEY!"

The other girls joined in, chasing Ravi around the camp.

"Wait! I was joking!"

Nobody helped him.

Everyone laughed.

"Stop!" Abhimanyu finally called out. "Or you girls are going to kill him today!"

The girls finally stopped.

Ravi stood up, laughing despite the pain.

"Thank you, Abhi, buddy."

He paused.

"I almost died like Ethan."

The laughter disappeared.

Silence settled over the camp.

Everyone remembered.

Ethan.

The battle.

The beast.

Ravi's face changed immediately.

"Sorry," he whispered.

Leonard looked at him seriously.

"No, Ravi. You're right about one thing. We need to improve."

He looked around the camp.

"That beast barely needed its full strength to overwhelm us. We were helpless against it."

Mateo nodded. "I was almost killed. If we hadn't made those bombs, none of us might have survived."

"And now we don't even have one bomb left," Manan added.

"What happens if another beast attacks us tomorrow?" someone asked.

Nobody answered.

The fire crackled between them.

Abhimanyu slowly stood.

"We don't know what this world wants from us," he said calmly. "We don't know how many monsters are stronger than the one we just fought, and we don't know whether the path ahead will become easier or worse."

Everyone listened.

"But we do know one thing. We survived."

His eyes moved across the group.

"Not because we were stronger. Not because we were lucky every time. We survived because when one person fell, someone else reached out a hand. When one person was afraid, someone stood beside them. And when we had nothing left, we still refused to give up."

His voice became firmer.

"We cannot control this world. But we can control what we become in it. So tomorrow, we rest. After that, we learn. We train. We become stronger. Not because we want to fight everything we see, but because the next time danger comes, I want every one of us to have a chance to protect ourselves and each other."

He looked toward the dark jungle.

"We may have lost our old lives, but we haven't lost our future."

The group remained silent for a moment.

Then Aditya nodded.

"We'll get stronger."

One by one, the others nodded as well.

They decided to remain there for two days.

That night, everyone slowly settled down around the camp. Some slept on soft bushes, some on the ground, and others used the large stones near the river as makeshift beds.

Mason sat quietly beside Aditya, listening to everything.

He had barely spoken during the evening.

Aditya noticed his expression.

"Hey, Mason. What's wrong? Your face looks a little twisted."

Everyone looked toward him.

Mason hesitated before lowering his eyes.

"I... lost a good friend," he said quietly. "I'm still angry about it."

The group understood.

Ravi looked at him and smiled faintly.

"No matter how much of a bunch of jerks you guys were... you were still our friends."

A few people immediately covered their mouths, trying not to laugh.

Mason's teeth clenched for a moment.

But he forced a smile.

"Thank you."

Leonard stood up.

"Enough for tonight. We have plenty to do tomorrow. Go to sleep."

Everyone nodded.

Slowly, the camp became quiet.

The river continued flowing beneath the moonlight.

The fire burned lower.

One by one, everyone fell asleep.

Everyone except Mason.

He looked toward Ravi's sleeping figure.

"You insulted me... and everyone laughed at me."

A faint smile appeared on his face.

"I'll remember that."

Then he finally lay down.

The jungle grew silent around them.

For the first time in many days, they slept without moving forward.

They did not know what the next two days would bring.

But for now, they had found something rare in this strange world.

A place to breathe.
