Chapter 142 - Chapter 142 — Meeting Arashi

The streets of Beijing were unforgiving, a labyrinth of shadowed alleys, narrow pathways, and the distant cries of the city's forgotten. Ten-year-old Li Wei moved like a ghost among the crowds—thin, ragged, and nearly invisible to the bustling world around him. Hunger gnawed at his stomach, and his small hands shook as he eyed a wealthy merchant strolling past with a full pouch of coins jingling at his belt.

Instinct took over. Survival had always been instinct. He darted forward, fingers nimble and practiced despite his youth, aiming for the man's pouch. His heart pounded—not just from exertion, but from the adrenaline-fueled fear of getting caught.

But before he could make off with the coins, a hand as fast as lightning clamped over his wrist. The grip was firm, unyielding, yet not violent. Li Wei froze, eyes wide with fear.

"You have courage," said a calm, deep voice, "but courage without guidance is wasted."

The boy's chest heaved as he struggled against the firm hold, but the hand did not loosen. He dared to look up. A man stood before him—tall, muscular, with an aura of quiet authority that made the chaos of the streets feel almost distant. His dark eyes were sharp but not cruel; instead, they held something that Li Wei had not seen in years: understanding.

"Who… who are you?" Li Wei stammered, his small voice cracking. "Why… why are you stopping me?"

The man crouched slightly to meet the boy's gaze, his expression calm yet piercing. "I am Arashi," he said. "And I could let you go, punish you, or teach you. But I see potential in you, Li Wei. You have the spark of strength, but you do not yet understand it."

Li Wei's brows furrowed in confusion. "Potential? Spark? I… I don't understand."

Arashi smiled faintly, shaking his head. "Not yet. But that will come in time. First… you must survive today." He reached into a small satchel at his side and pulled out a steamed bun, still warm. "Eat," he commanded gently. "You need your strength before you can learn anything else."

The boy hesitated, unsure of the intent. No one had ever offered him food without a price, a threat, or a hidden condition. He glanced around the bustling street, expecting someone to yell or attack, but all was silent. Hesitation gave way to hunger. He grabbed the bun and devoured it greedily, crumbs falling onto his worn clothes.

Arashi observed quietly, letting him eat. Once Li Wei had finished, he spoke again, his voice calm and deliberate. "You are alone. No parents, no home, no one to guide you. You've learned to survive on the streets, yes? But that is not enough. Survival alone will not awaken your true strength."

Li Wei swallowed hard, the weight of truth in the man's words pressing down on him. "I… I have no one. No one to help me…"

"That is why I am here," Arashi said. He extended his hand, massive and firm, yet open, offering more than just guidance. "Come with me. I will teach you. I will protect you. And one day, you will understand what it means to awaken your strength."

The boy looked at the hand, then at the streets around him—the alleys, the shadows, the cries of hunger, despair, and poverty. He had survived here for ten years, but survival had never offered hope. Not truly. Yet something in the man's eyes, in the calm authority he exuded, felt different.

Tentatively, he took the hand.

And that simple act changed everything.

Arashi guided him through the narrow streets, moving with a fluidity that seemed unnatural, almost predatory in the quiet efficiency of each step. Li Wei followed, feeling a mixture of fear and awe. They passed the crowded markets, the street children, the beggars, and the hungry merchants, yet it was as if they were invisible, moving through the city with purpose.

Finally, they reached a small, secluded building tucked away from the noise of the streets. Inside, it was modest—bare floors, simple furnishings, and a hearth that sent warmth spilling into the space. Li Wei had never experienced warmth like this. The kind that seeped into the bones and the soul alike.

"You will stay here," Arashi said, gesturing to a small corner where a simple blanket lay. "Eat, rest, and regain your strength. Then, we begin your training."

Li Wei lowered himself onto the blanket, still trembling slightly from exhaustion and disbelief. He stared at the man, searching for some sign of cruelty, but found none. Only patience, only the promise of guidance.

Days passed. At first, training was simple—focus, awareness, observation. Arashi observed Li Wei closely, correcting his movements, shaping his posture, guiding his breathing. But even in these mundane exercises, Li Wei began to feel a strange energy stirring within him, a warmth in his chest that pulsed with possibility.

"You are not ordinary," Arashi said one morning, watching Li Wei struggle to maintain balance on a narrow beam. "You have the potential to awaken power beyond your comprehension. But power without discipline will destroy you. Do you understand?"

Li Wei nodded vigorously, sweat dripping down his face. "I… I understand. I want to be strong. I want to survive… and more."

Arashi's eyes softened, a rare display of warmth breaking through his normally stern exterior. "Good. Then listen carefully. One day, the Lord Ghost Demon will awaken. When he does, chaos will follow. Destruction, death, suffering… all of it will fall upon the innocent. You must be ready. And when that day comes, you must protect those who cannot protect themselves. Do you understand, Li Wei?"

Li Wei's small chest rose and fell, his eyes blazing with the first sparks of determination he had ever felt. "I… I will. I will protect them. I promise."

Arashi nodded. "Good. Then we begin."

From that day, Li Wei's life changed forever. The streets of Beijing, the hunger, the loneliness—they remained a part of him, etched into his memory and character. But with Arashi, he learned discipline, control, and the beginnings of awakening. Lessons of strength, awareness, and the burden of responsibility. The boy who had once survived by cunning and desperation was slowly becoming a young warrior, guided by the hand of a master who had seen potential where the world had seen none.

Even in the chaos of his childhood, even amidst the streets of poverty and hunger, Li Wei began to understand something crucial: survival was only the first step. To protect, to fight, to awaken the power within—that required more. That required guidance. That required courage.

And for the first time in his life, Li Wei believed that he could rise above the streets. That he could rise above the orphan he had been. That he could face a future filled with unimaginable challenges… and survive.

Because Arashi had chosen him.

Because he had chosen to accept guidance.

Because he had chosen to awaken.
