Chapter 138 - Chapter 138 — Ishita’s Collapse

The battlefield had become a crucible of heat, wind, and shadow. Dust and shattered debris swirled through the air, obscuring vision, twisting perceptions, and threatening to swallow anyone unprepared. The combined efforts of Akira, Li Wei, and Ishita had pushed Kaerath and the Lord Ghost Demon back, forcing them onto the defensive, but the strain was visible, creeping into every muscle and nerve of the young fighters.

Ishita's heart pounded violently in her chest. Her breaths came short, ragged, as if the very act of inhaling cost her more than she could spare. Her scarlet aura flickered, growing unstable with every movement, with every strike she threw. She had been pushing herself beyond what she knew she could endure.

"You're overextending!" Li Wei shouted, his voice cutting through the roar of the battlefield. His eyes scanned every shadow tendril, every flicker of red flame from Kaerath. "Ishita, pull back! You can't sustain this!"

"I can!" she gasped, refusing to let him see her fear. Her hand tightened around her blade, her aura flaring wildly as she prepared to launch another volley of scarlet energy at the Lord Ghost Demon. "We can end this now! If I hold them off—just a little longer—Akira can finish Kaerath!"

Her eyes locked on the Lord Ghost Demon. The shadows surrounding him twisted unnaturally, forming jagged spears aimed directly at her. The demon's voice echoed through the chaos, cold and cutting.

"You're tiring yourself unnecessarily, child. Energy spent recklessly is wasted… and a wasted warrior is dead."

Ishita gritted her teeth, forcing herself to ignore the warning. She had already felt exhaustion clawing at her muscles, her aura threatening to collapse under the pressure, yet she refused to stop. She couldn't—not when Akira was relying on her. Not when Li Wei was counting on her.

She inhaled sharply, focusing every ounce of energy, and released a concentrated beam of scarlet light toward the Lord Ghost Demon. The attack was precise, explosive, and deadly. It connected, striking his shadowy form squarely in the chest.

For a moment, even the Lord Ghost Demon flinched.

But it was fleeting.

With a casual movement, he redirected the impact, twisting it back into the surrounding shadows. The energy exploded against the ruins, sending shockwaves that knocked Ishita off balance. Her aura flickered violently, and she staggered, barely managing to stay upright.

"Stay with me, Ishita!" Li Wei shouted, rushing to her side, wind slicing through the debris around them. His hand touched her shoulder, stabilizing her just long enough for her to regain footing.

"I… I'm fine," she gasped, though her body screamed otherwise. Her scarlet aura was sputtering now, jagged and unstable, threatening to collapse entirely.

Akira's gaze flicked toward her briefly, his blue flames surging instinctively in response. He had noticed her instability—not that he could voice concern. There was no room for hesitation. Kaerath had regrouped, his red fire blazing brighter, and the Lord Ghost Demon had shifted his attention, preparing a new attack.

Ishita raised her blade again, forcing her aura to stabilize as she moved into position. The Lord Ghost Demon's shadow tendrils surged forward in unison, a coordinated strike designed to overwhelm and crush.

Li Wei reacted instantly, creating a spiraling wind barrier to deflect several tendrils, while Akira swung his blue-flamed sword to intercept another. But Ishita's concentration was fraying. Each strike took more from her than she realized, every movement costing her strength she no longer had.

Her body trembled. Sweat stung her eyes. Her aura flickered violently, screaming silently as it struggled to maintain cohesion.

"Li Wei… I… can't hold much longer," she admitted, her voice barely audible over the chaos.

He shot her a glance, sharp and calculating, but edged with panic. "You've pushed too far, Ishita! Pull back or you'll—"

Before he could finish, her aura spiked violently, an uncontrolled surge of energy erupting from her in every direction. The sheer force destabilized the battlefield momentarily. Rocks and debris floated, suspended by the energy fluctuations, as a brilliant scarlet vortex expanded around her.

The Lord Ghost Demon's eyes narrowed, and a smile twisted across his face. "Perfect," he whispered. "Exactly what I wanted. Release everything… and collapse."

He lifted one hand, forming a massive sphere of condensed darkness, pulsing ominously. Shadows twisted around it like living snakes, each movement predatory. The sphere expanded slowly at first, then rapidly, aimed directly at Ishita and Li Wei. Its energy was suffocating, compressing the air around them, warping space in a way that made movement nearly impossible.

Ishita's eyes widened. She stumbled, trying to stabilize her aura, but the exhaustion was too great. Her strength faltered, and she collapsed to one knee. Her blade slipped slightly from her grip.

Li Wei's mind raced. The sphere would strike in less than two seconds. He had no time to think, only act.

"Ishita!" he shouted. "Get up! Now!"

"I… can't—" she gasped.

Before she could respond, a figure erupted through the collapsing energy—a streak of blue fire cutting through the darkness like a comet.

Akira.

The boy, the flame, the unbroken force of vengeance, positioned himself between Ishita and the oncoming sphere. His blue flames wrapped around his body, coiling outward like living tendrils, intercepting the sphere mid-air. The collision sent a shockwave so violent it pushed back Kaerath and the Lord Ghost Demon, forcing them both to stagger.

The sphere shattered on contact, fragments of darkness spiraling harmlessly into the air. Kaerath gritted his teeth, bloodied and scorched from the impact, but he did not fall. The Lord Ghost Demon's shadows writhed violently, trying to stabilize, but Akira's flames burned too brightly, too fully, forcing their attention and energy away from Ishita.

Li Wei's hand reached out instinctively to steady Ishita. Her body trembled violently, aura flickering in and out of control. She was collapsing from overexertion, but the interference of Akira's blue flames bought her a precious few seconds to regain balance.

Ishita's eyes filled with tears—exhaustion, fear, and relief all intertwined. She glanced at Akira, his back still turned to her, flames blazing, body battered but unwavering. She understood: he had saved her—not just with power, but with calculated intent, prioritizing her survival over his own pain.

She inhaled shakily, regaining her posture. Her aura flared weakly but stably, her blade returning to her hand. Li Wei exhaled, tension leaving him just slightly, his eyes meeting hers. A silent communication passed between them: she was alive, for now.

Akira turned toward them, his single eye glimmering beneath the blue flames. There was no smile. There was no warmth. Only determination.

The battlefield had shifted. The demons were forced to reconsider their strategies. For the first time, the combined might of Akira, Li Wei, and Ishita truly challenged the apex forces of darkness.

And yet, the fight was far from over.

The Lord Ghost Demon's voice cut through the tension like a blade. "Your defiance is entertaining, but fragile. Very fragile."

Kaerath rose, one arm bloodied, the other three still ablaze with red fire. "Impressive. But the human spirit has limits… and you, children, are nearing yours."

Ishita steadied her grip, chest heaving. Li Wei's wind surged to protect her, while Akira's flames flared like a beacon.

Together, they would stand. Together, they would fight.

The trio had survived Ishita's collapse, endured the overwhelming power of Kaerath and the Lord Ghost Demon, and recalibrated.

The next move—whatever it might be—would decide the momentum of the battle.

And none of them would falter.
