Chapter 3 - The First Step into Enemy Ground

The city didn't sleep.

Jin Tae noticed that the longer he walked.

At first, there were still people—laughing, arguing, stumbling out of bars, living their lives like nothing in the world could touch them. But as time passed, as the minutes stretched and the distance grew, the crowds thinned.

The lights got dimmer.

The streets got quieter.

And the feeling in his chest—

It didn't go away.

His shoes tapped steadily against the pavement as he followed the route in his head.

Eungam-dong.

He didn't need the system to guide every step… yet. He knew the general direction. Or at least, he thought he did.

The cold air brushed against his face, sobering him up more than the walk already had. The alcohol from earlier was fading, leaving behind a clear, uncomfortable awareness of everything around him.

"…This is a bad idea."

He muttered it under his breath, but his feet didn't stop.

He adjusted his jacket slightly.

Still in his work suit.

Wrinkled now. A bit dirty from earlier. But still—

Noticeable.

Out of place.

He shoved his hands into his pockets and kept walking.

After a while, even the convenience stores became scarce.

Streetlights flickered instead of shining steady.

A couple of alleys he passed were completely swallowed in darkness.

That's when it hit him.

"…I stand out."

He slowed his pace slightly.

A guy in a suit.

Walking alone.

Late at night.

In an area like this?

"…Yeah. That's not good."

[Observation: Increased risk detected.]

The system's voice cut in suddenly.

Jin didn't even flinch this time.

"…No kidding."

[Recommendation: Adjust route or reduce visibility.]

"…Reduce visibility how? I can't exactly change clothes right now."

[Suggestion: Avoid open streets. Utilize low-traffic paths.]

Jin glanced ahead.

Then to the side.

A narrow alley.

Dark.

Quiet.

"…You're telling me to go in there?"

[Lower probability of encounter: 63%]

"…That's not exactly comforting."

Still—

He hesitated for a second.

Then turned.

The alley smelled like damp concrete and old trash.

His footsteps slowed automatically, more careful now.

Each step quieter.

More controlled.

The city noise faded behind him, replaced by the faint hum of distant traffic and the occasional drip of water somewhere in the dark.

"…Feels like I'm asking to get stabbed."

[Current path reduces exposure.]

"…Yeah, yeah."

He exhaled quietly.

He moved through the alley and out the other side, stepping onto another street.

This one was worse.

Less light.

More silence.

A couple of figures lingered far down the road, but they didn't pay him any attention.

Jin kept walking.

Steady.

Trying not to look nervous.

Trying not to look like a target.

Then—

"Hey."

The voice came from his right.

Jin stopped.

Slowly turned his head.

Two guys.

Leaning near a shuttered storefront.

Watching him.

One of them pushed himself off the wall, stepping forward slightly.

"…You lost or something?"

Jin didn't answer right away.

His eyes scanned them quickly.

Casual clothes.

But not casual posture.

The way they stood.

The way they looked at him.

Yeah.

Not good.

[Threat assessment: Moderate.]

"…I can see that."

Jin replied under his breath.

"Nice suit," the second guy added, smirking a little. "Bit late for office hours, don't you think?"

Jin forced a small shrug.

"Just heading home."

"Home?" The first guy tilted his head. "Through here?"

Jin didn't respond.

The silence stretched.

Then—

The first guy took another step forward.

"Why don't you stop for a second?"

Jin's heartbeat picked up.

Not panic.

Not yet.

But close.

[Recommendation: Disengage immediately.]

"…Yeah, I was thinking the same thing."

Jin nodded slightly.

"Sorry, I'm in a hurry."

He turned—

And started walking.

Not running.

Not yet.

Just walking.

"Hey."

The tone changed.

Sharper.

Closer.

"Did we say you could go?"

Jin didn't look back.

But his pace—

It picked up.

Footsteps behind him.

"Yo—stop!"

That was enough.

Jin broke into a run.

His shoes slammed against the pavement as adrenaline hit him hard.

The quiet street exploded with sound—footsteps chasing behind him, voices shouting.

"Catch him!"

"Don't let him get away!"

"…Shit."

His breathing turned heavy almost instantly.

He wasn't built for this.

Office job.

Long hours sitting down.

Not running for his life.

[Route update: Turn left in 10 meters.]

"What—?"

He didn't question it.

At the corner—

He turned.

The alley he entered was tighter than the last.

Darker.

Messier.

His shoulder brushed against the wall as he pushed forward.

Footsteps behind him again.

Closer now.

"Where the hell are you going?!"

Jin gritted his teeth.

[Maintain current speed.]

[Do not stop.]

"…I wasn't planning to!"

His lungs burned.

His legs screamed.

But he kept moving.

Another turn.

Another narrow path.

The city blurred around him, reduced to corners and shadows and the sound of pursuit.

Then—

[Hide.]

"What?"

[Immediate right. Concealment available.]

He didn't argue.

He darted right—

And slammed himself behind a stack of old crates tucked into a dark corner.

He dropped low.

Pressed himself still.

Held his breath.

Footsteps—

Rushed past the alley entrance.

Slowed.

Then stopped.

"…Where'd he go?"

"…He came this way."

Silence.

Jin didn't move.

Didn't breathe.

Didn't think.

Seconds stretched.

Felt like minutes.

"…Tch. Forget it."

Footsteps again.

Moving away this time.

Fading.

Jin stayed still a little longer.

Just to be sure.

Then finally—

He exhaled.

Quiet.

Shaky.

"…Holy shit…"

[Threat avoided.]

"…Yeah. No thanks to my cardio."

He leaned his head back against the wall, closing his eyes for a second.

His whole body felt heavy.

Drained.

But alive.

After a moment, he pushed himself up.

Slowly.

Carefully.

"…Let's not do that again."

[Agreed.]

"…You could've warned me earlier."

[Warning issued upon detection.]

"…Next time, detect earlier."

[Acknowledged.]

Jin let out a tired breath.

"…Good."

He stepped out from his hiding spot, glancing around once more before continuing.

This time—

More careful.

More aware.

The rest of the walk felt longer.

Quieter.

Like the city itself was watching him now.

Eventually—

The buildings changed again.

Less maintained.

More broken.

Graffiti on walls.

Windows shattered.

Entire places abandoned like they were forgotten.

"…This should be it…"

[Location confirmed: Eungam-dong warehouse.]

Jin slowed his steps.

Then stopped.

There it was.

The warehouse.

Big.

Dark.

Empty.

The entrance slightly open, like it hadn't been touched in years.

He stared at it.

Taking it in.

"…This place…"

It wasn't safe.

That much was obvious.

But—

It was quiet.

Hidden.

Ignored.

"…Guess this works."

He stepped forward.

Pushed the door open further.

The hinges creaked loudly in the silence.

Inside—

Dust.

Broken pallets.

Old equipment scattered around.

But space.

Plenty of space.

Jin walked in slowly.

Each step echoing faintly.

He stopped near the center.

Looked around.

"…So…"

He swallowed.

"…This counts, right?"

The screen appeared.

Right in front of him.

[Location registered.]

[Conditions met.]

A brief pause.

[Quest Complete.]

Jin stared at the words.

For a second—

He didn't react.

Didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Then—

"…I actually did it."

His voice was quiet.

Almost disbelieving.

The empty warehouse stood around him.

Silent.

Still.

And for the first time that night—

Jin Tae wasn't running.

He was standing.

At the center of something new.

Something dangerous.

Something that had just begun.
