Chapter 25 - Chapter 26: The Office

Walking into Harper-Steele together felt different. Before, they had often arrived separately, maintaining a carefully constructed public image. Later, during the crisis, they arrived together as united generals marching into war.

Today, they arrived as a couple. Marcus's hand rested on the small of Lily's back, a simple, possessive gesture that sent a thrill through her. The lobby staff did a poor job of hiding their double-takes. The change was subtle but seismic.

In the elevator, alone, he turned to her. "My meeting should be over by eleven. Meet me for lunch? The usual place?"

"The usual place" was a tiny, exclusive bistro two blocks over where they'd had countless "business lunches" under the contract, conversations stiff with subtext and unspoken rules.

"I'd like that," she said.

The doors opened on her floor first, where 'Lily's Signature' now occupied a sleek office suite, a tangible result of their successful alliance. He squeezed her hand before she stepped out. "See you at eleven."

Her morning was a whirlwind. Sarah, her partner, pounced the moment Lily walked in.

"Okay, details. Now. You have a new glow. And don't try to tell me it's just post-victory endorphins," Sarah demanded, shutting the office door.

Lily felt a blush creep up her neck. "The contract… it's over. The term ended."

Sarah's eyes widened. "And? Don't you dare leave me hanging."

"And… we've decided to… continue. For real."

Sarah's squeal could probably be heard in Marcus's top-floor office. She launched into a barrage of questions about living arrangements, which Lily parried with laughing evasions.

At five to eleven, Lily felt a nervous flutter. This felt like a first date. She reapplied her lipstick, smoothed her dress, and took the elevator down.

He was already there, waiting outside the bistro, looking impossibly handsome in his tailored suit. He wasn't on his phone. He was just waiting. For her.

He pulled her into a quick, hard kiss right there on the sidewalk, oblivious to the world. "I've been thinking about doing that all morning," he murmured against her lips.

The lunch was nothing like what had come before. The conversation was easy and light. They talked about her difficult bride, his tedious board meeting, and whether they should get a dog. It was normal. It was everything.

As they were leaving, Marcus nodded at a man passing by. "Thompson," he said, his tone coolly professional.

The man, a business associate, stopped. "Marcus! And… Lily. Lovely to see you both." His eyes flickered between them, noticing the way Marcus's hand rested on the back of her chair, the easy intimacy. "I heard you two were quite the formidable team during that recent… unpleasantness."

"We were," Marcus said, his gaze shifting to Lily. The cold professionalism in his eyes melted into something warm and private. "But the best part was after."

The man looked slightly confused but nodded and moved on. Lily looked at Marcus, her heart full. He had just drawn a line for the entire world to see. The battle was separate. What they had now was everything.
