Chapter 47 - THE LEVELS

The morning after the Costa Rica match, Armani woke in the team hotel to fifty three missed calls and a hundred and twelve messages and the particular disorientation of a man whose life had changed while he was sleeping.

The goal had traveled. The Gleaner had run it as their lead sports story: "Wilson Scores on Debut as Jamaica Stun Costa Rica." The Jamaica Observer had a feature: "From MoBay to the Reggae Boyz: Armani Wilson's Remarkable Journey." Yard to Pitch had recorded a special episode. Marcus Reid's voice, usually measured and podcast calm, was audibly emotional in the opening segment that someone had clipped and sent to Armani: "This is what we cover this sport for. This is why we do this. A boy from Montego Bay, twenty years old, scoring on his senior debut against Costa Rica in a World Cup qualifier. This is Jamaican football."

He lay in bed and scrolled through the messages. Kofi had sent seventeen voice notes, each one louder than the last, the final one just screaming. His mother had sent a photograph: herself in the stadium, tears on her face, the pitch visible behind her, the scoreboard showing Jamaica 1 Costa Rica 0. Deon Campbell had sent a brief, professional message: "Well done. We'll talk about what this means when you're back." Schopp had sent two words: "Well done." Felix had sent a slightly longer message: "Watched the highlights. Your positioning for the goal was perfect. The finish was better. See you next week."

Callum Edwards had sent a scouting report. Two pages. Handwritten, photographed, sent as images. The boy had stayed up to watch the match on an illegal stream in Barnsley and had written his analysis in real time, the handwriting getting messier as the match progressed, the final entry, after the goal, just a series of exclamation marks and the words: "HE DID IT."

Armani smiled at the ceiling of the hotel room. Then he got up, showered, and went to breakfast, because the Honduras match was in four days and the work was not done.

Leon Bailey was sitting alone at a corner table in the breakfast room, eating scrambled eggs with the focused attention of a man who treated nutrition as part of his profession rather than a pleasure. He was twenty eight years old, a Premier League player, an Aston Villa winger who had played in the Champions League and the Bundesliga and who had, depending on which year you asked him, the most natural talent of any Jamaican footballer alive. He was also difficult, moody, brilliant, frustrating, and capable of producing moments on a football pitch that made you forget everything else about him.

Armani had watched Leon Bailey since he was fifteen. Not casually. Obsessively. Bailey was the Jamaican footballer who had done what every Jamaican footballer dreamed of doing: gone to Europe as a teenager, played in top leagues, earned a big money transfer to the Premier League. He was the proof that it was possible. The evidence that a boy from Kingston could become a Premier League player, that the path existed even if it was narrow and treacherous and littered with the careers of people who had tried and failed.

Armani had never spoken to him. In the two days of camp before the Costa Rica match, Bailey had been distant, the senior player who trained with intensity but who kept to himself off the pitch, who ate alone, who didn't seek out the younger players and who didn't seem interested in being sought out. The other players treated him with the particular respect that squads reserved for their best player: not friendship exactly, but acknowledgment, the understanding that Leon Bailey existed on a different level and that the normal social rules didn't quite apply.

Armani took his plate and walked toward Bailey's table. He didn't plan it. Didn't rehearse it. Just walked.

"Can I sit?"

Bailey looked up from his eggs. His face was neutral, unreadable, the expression of a man who had been approached by hundreds of young players over the course of his career and who had learned to assess them quickly: serious or starstruck, worth the time or not.

"Sit."

Armani sat. Ate his toast. Said nothing for a minute, because saying nothing felt more honest than saying something forced.

Bailey broke the silence. "Good goal last night."

"Thanks."

"The finish was clean. Left foot, across the goalkeeper. Most young players would have gone for power. You went for placement. That's smart."

"The goalkeeper was shifting right. The gap was left."

"I know. I saw." Bailey took a drink of his coffee. "You play in the Championship."

"Barnsley."

"How many goals this season?"

"Eight. Eleven assists."

Bailey's eyebrows moved. Not dramatically. A millimeter of acknowledgment. "That's good numbers for a first season. Who's your manager?"

"Markus Schopp."

"Austrian?"

"Yeah."

"Tactical. Disciplined. Good for development." He pushed his plate aside. "You play on the right?"

"Usually. Hallgrímsson put me on the left last night."

"Because you're right footed and he wanted you cutting inside. Same thing Emery does with me at Villa. Left footed winger on the right side, cut inside, shoot. It's the inverted winger role." He paused. "You're comfortable there?"

"More comfortable on the right. But I can play both."

"Learn to play both equally. That doubles your value. At the Championship level, being a right winger is fine. At the Premier League level, being a winger who can play either flank is the difference between a squad player and a starter."

He said this without arrogance. Without condescension. Just information, delivered plainly, from a man who had been at the level Armani was trying to reach and who understood what it required.

"Can I ask you something?" Armani said.

"Go ahead."

"When you went to Genk. You were thirteen. You left Jamaica at thirteen and went to Belgium alone. How did you survive that?"

Bailey looked at him. The neutral expression shifted into something else, something more personal, the face of a man who had been asked a question that touched something real.

"I didn't leave alone. I left with my father. But the truth is, even with him there, I was alone. Belgium at thirteen is cold and strange and everyone speaks a language you don't understand and the football is faster than anything you've played and the other boys in the academy have been in the system since they were eight and you're the Jamaican kid who doesn't know anyone and doesn't speak Flemish and is homesick every single day."

He paused. Drank his coffee.

"You survive it because you don't have a choice. Because going back is not an option. Because you made a decision and the only way to honour it is to keep going." He looked at Armani directly. "You know this already. You went to Lincoln at, what, eighteen?"

"Eighteen."

"Cold. Grey. Lonely."

"Yeah."

"Then you know. The surviving is not the hard part. The hard part is what comes after the surviving. The part where you have to be good. Not just present, not just surviving, but actually good. Good enough to justify the sacrifice. Good enough to make the cold and the grey and the loneliness worth it."

He stood up, took his plate to the clearing station, and came back.

"Training is at ten. Walk with me."

They walked in the hotel garden, the Kingston morning hot and bright, the sound of traffic and birds and the distant bass of someone's sound system providing the soundtrack. Bailey walked slowly, his hands in the pockets of his training shorts, his body carrying the lean, compressed power of a man who had spent fifteen years in professional football and whose muscles had been shaped by the specific demands of playing at the highest level.

"The Championship to the Premier League," Bailey said, without preamble. "That's the jump you're looking at."

"If it happens."

"It'll happen. Your numbers are good, you're twenty, and clubs are already looking. The question isn't whether you'll get the chance. The question is whether you'll be ready when it comes."

"How do I get ready?"

"Three things." He held up a finger. "First. Your right foot. How good is it?"

"Better than it was. I scored with it a few weeks ago."

"Better than it was is not good enough. In the Premier League, defenders will show you onto your weaker foot every time. If they know you're going to cut inside onto your left, they will block that route and force you wide. You need a right foot that is a genuine weapon, not a backup. Work on it every day. Not sometimes. Every day."

Second finger. "Your body. You're quick. I can see that. But Premier League defenders are quick too, and they're stronger. The Championship is physical but the Premier League is a different kind of physical. The challenges are harder, the recovery time between games is shorter, the accumulation of contact over a season is brutal. You need to be stronger without losing your speed. That's a specific kind of training and your fitness team needs to understand it."

Third finger. "Your mind. This is the one nobody talks about. The Premier League is not just faster football. It is a different psychological environment. The scrutiny is constant. The media is relentless. The expectations are enormous. Every mistake is on television, on social media, in the newspapers. Every bad game is a crisis. Every good game is forgotten by the next week. You need a mind that can handle that. And I'm telling you honestly, most players don't have it. Most players who are good enough technically and physically to play in the Premier League fail because their minds can't sustain it."

He stopped walking. Turned to face Armani.

"You scored on your debut last night. In front of thirty thousand people. In a World Cup qualifier. That tells me your mind is strong. But one night is not a career. A career is doing it again and again, in different stadiums, under different pressures, when the crowd is against you, when the media is criticizing you, when your body hurts and your confidence is low and the only thing keeping you on the pitch is the decision you made as a boy that this is what you were going to do."

"You sound like you're talking about yourself."

"I am. Everything I'm telling you, I learned the hard way. In Belgium, in Germany, in England. I made mistakes. I let the pressure get to me. I had years where my talent was enough and years where it wasn't. I'm twenty eight and I'm still learning." He paused. "But you're twenty and you're asking the right questions, which means you're already ahead of where I was."

They walked back to the hotel. At the entrance, Bailey stopped.

"One more thing. The goal last night. Enjoy it. Don't let anyone tell you it's just one goal or just a debut or just anything. It's yours. You earned it. Enjoy it fully, without reservation, because moments like that don't come as often as you think."

He went inside. Armani stood in the Kingston heat and felt the weight of the conversation settling into him, the words of a player he had watched since he was fifteen, a man who had walked the path he was trying to walk and who had, without being asked, decided to turn around and show him what was ahead.

The afternoon brought an event that Armani had not expected.

The JFF had organized a joint appearance for the men's and women's national teams at a community football clinic in Trench Town. The Reggae Girlz were also in camp, preparing for their own qualifiers, and the federation had decided that a combined event would generate publicity and demonstrate unity between the two programs.

The bus from the hotel took them through Kingston's streets, past the markets and the churches and the zinc fences and the murals and the particular energy of a city that was simultaneously beautiful and difficult, that wore its history openly and its future uncertainly. Trench Town was different from the Kingston that tourists saw. It was the Kingston that produced musicians and footballers and poets, the creative furnace of a community that had been neglected by the people who should have invested in it and had invested in itself instead.

The clinic was at a community pitch, a flat rectangle of packed earth with painted lines and metal goalposts that leaned slightly inward, as if tired. Two hundred children were there, ages ranging from five to fifteen, wearing a chaos of football shirts from every league and every country, the global reach of the sport visible in the badges on their chests: Barcelona, Manchester City, Juventus, Jamaica.

The Reggae Girlz arrived in a separate bus. Armani watched them file off, professional and composed, women who played at the highest level of the women's game and who carried themselves with the confidence of people who had fought for everything they had.

And then Bunny Shaw stepped off the bus.

Khadija Shaw. Manchester City's all time top scorer. The WSL's leading goalscorer this season. The captain of the Reggae Girlz. Twenty nine years old, from Spanish Town, the youngest of thirteen siblings, a woman who had grown up playing football with her brothers in the yard and who had turned that into a career that placed her among the best strikers in the world, male or female.

Armani had watched her play. Everyone had watched her play. In Jamaica, Bunny Shaw was not just a footballer. She was a symbol. The proof that Jamaican women's football was real, was excellent, was capable of competing at the highest level. She had scored goals in the World Cup. She had won awards that no Caribbean player, male or female, had ever won. She was on the shortlist for the Ballon d'Or. She was, by any reasonable measure, the most accomplished Jamaican footballer currently playing.

She was also, in person, warmer and funnier than her public image suggested. During the clinic, she worked with a group of girls aged ten to twelve, running dribbling drills and shooting exercises, and her voice carried across the pitch, the Kingston accent thick and genuine, the laughter frequent, the connection with the children immediate and real.

"Use your body!" she called to a girl who was being pushed off the ball. "You're strong! Let them know you're strong!"

Armani was working with a group of boys on the other side of the pitch, doing the same kind of drills, the simple coaching that community events required. But he kept watching Shaw. Not the football. The way she carried herself. The way she made each child feel seen, the way she bent down to talk to a five year old who was crying because she'd been knocked over, the way she picked the girl up and said: "In football, we fall. And then we get up. That's the whole game."

After the clinic, when the children had been fed and photographed and sent home with signed posters and the particular glow of having spent an afternoon with people they admired, the two squads gathered in the shade of a concrete stand. Water bottles and sandwiches. The informal socializing of two groups of Jamaican footballers sharing a space and a purpose.

Joel pushed Armani toward Shaw. "Go talk to her. She doesn't bite."

"She's Bunny Shaw."

"Yeah. And yesterday you scored a goal in a World Cup qualifier. You're not a fan anymore. You're a colleague."

The word colleague felt absurd applied to Bunny Shaw. But Joel was right. They wore the same badge. They represented the same country. The distance between them was not a wall. It was a conversation.

He walked over. Shaw was sitting on a low wall, drinking water, talking to two of her teammates.

"Excuse me. I just wanted to say congratulations on the season. The hat trick against Spurs was incredible."

Shaw looked at him. Smiled. "You're Wilson. The one who scored last night."

"Yeah."

"I watched it. On my phone, in the hotel room. The whole squad watched together." She moved over on the wall, making space. "Sit down. Tell me about the goal."

He sat. He told her about the goal. The transition, the run, the goalkeeper shifting right, the finish left. She listened with the attention of someone who understood finishing at a deep level, who had scored hundreds of goals and who recognized the decisions and the instincts that produced them.

"The wait," she said, when he finished. "That's the thing. The moment before you shoot, when the goalkeeper is coming and you have to decide. Most strikers panic. They shoot too early because the pressure of the goalkeeper closing makes them rush. You waited. You let him commit. That's not something you can teach. That's something you feel."

"Did you always have that?"

She laughed. "No. When I was young, I blasted everything. Power, power, power. I thought scoring was about hitting the ball as hard as possible. It took me years to learn that scoring is about patience. About timing. About understanding what the goalkeeper is going to do before he does it." She drank her water. "In the WSL, the goalkeepers are excellent. You can't just run at them and shoot. You have to be smart. You have to read them. And the reading comes from experience. From scoring a lot and missing a lot and learning from both."

"How many goals this season?"

"Eighteen in the league. Twenty two in all competitions." She said it without pride. Just the number. The way a builder might say how many houses she had built. "But the ones I remember are not the goals. The ones I remember are the misses. The ones that got away. Because those are the ones that taught me something."

They talked for twenty minutes. About finishing, about movement, about the specific art of arriving in the right place at the right time, which Shaw described not as positioning but as feeling. "You feel where the ball is going to be. You feel where the space is going to open. It's not a calculation. It's a sense. Like hearing or touch. You develop it by being in the box, by making the runs, by failing and adjusting and failing again until the sense is there and you can trust it."

She talked about Manchester, about the WSL, about being a Jamaican woman in English football, about the specific challenges that the women's game faced and the specific joys it offered. She talked about Spanish Town, about growing up the youngest of thirteen, about playing with her brothers in the yard and being told by everyone except her brother Kentardo that girls didn't play football.

"Kentardo taught me," she said. "My brother. He saw something in me that nobody else saw, or that everybody else saw and decided to ignore. He said: 'You can play. Don't let anyone tell you different.' So I played. And here I am."

She stood up. Extended her hand. "Good luck against Honduras. Score another one."

"I'll try."

"Don't try. Do." She grinned. "That's what I tell the girls on my team. Trying is for training. Matches are for doing."

She walked back to her teammates. Armani sat on the wall in the Trench Town sun and felt something that was not quite inspiration and not quite instruction but something between the two, the quiet broadening of his understanding of what football could be, of who played it and why and what it meant to the people who gave their lives to it.

Bailey had shown him the road ahead. Shaw had shown him the standard. Both of them Jamaican. Both of them carrying the same badge, the same flag, the same island's hopes on their backs. Both of them proof that it was possible.

Tuesday night. The National Stadium. Honduras.

Hallgrímsson started him. Not from the bench. From the beginning. Left wing, cutting inside, the same role as the Costa Rica match but from the first whistle, the coach deciding that the debut goal had earned him the start.

The anthem played. Armani stood in the line, hand on the crest, and sang. Beside him, Bailey was singing too, the Premier League winger's voice quiet but present, the words of the national anthem moving through both of them and through the thirty two thousand people in the stands and through the television screens in Montego Bay and London and New York and Toronto and everywhere that Jamaicans gathered to watch their country play.

The match was different from Costa Rica. Honduras were more physical, more direct, less technical. They played with the aggression that Central American teams produced in qualifying matches, the tackles hard, the challenges constant, the referee allowing more contact than the Costa Rica official had.

Armani adapted. The Championship had taught him this: the ability to adjust to different opponents, different styles, different levels of physicality. Honduras's right back was strong and committed but slow to turn. Armani noted it in the first five minutes and filed it.

In the nineteenth minute, he turned him.

A pass from midfield, arriving at Armani's feet with the right back tight on his shoulder. Instead of trying to beat him with pace, which would have been the obvious choice and the choice the defender was expecting, Armani dropped his shoulder, faked the inside run, and spun the other way, the ball staying close to his feet, the defender's momentum carrying him past.

He was free. Into the box. The goalkeeper coming out. And this time, instead of shooting, he cut the ball back. Bailey was arriving at the edge of the area, the Premier League winger timing his run perfectly, and Armani's pass found him in stride.

Bailey shot. Left foot. The ball curling away from the goalkeeper, finding the top corner with the kind of technique that justified every superlative that had ever been written about him.

One nil.

Bailey ran to the corner flag. Armani met him there. The older player grabbed the younger one and pulled him close and said into his ear, over the noise of thirty two thousand people: "That's how you do it. The pass was perfect. Remember that feeling."

Jamaica won two nil. A second goal in the seventy eighth minute from a set piece, a corner that the center back headed in. Armani played seventy three minutes, was substituted to a standing ovation, and walked off the pitch with the understanding that he had just played two competitive international matches and had contributed a goal and an assist and had not looked out of place alongside players who competed in the Premier League and the top divisions of European football.

In the changing room afterward, Bailey found him.

"Two caps. One goal. One assist. Not bad."

"Thanks. For everything this week. The conversation. The advice."

"Don't thank me. Just use it." Bailey sat down beside him. "When you get back to Barnsley, the Championship will feel different. Smaller, maybe. The international experience does that. It gives you perspective. Use that perspective. Don't let it make you arrogant. Let it make you hungry."

He pulled off his boots. Looked at them for a moment.

"I've been doing this for fifteen years," he said. "Since I was thirteen in Belgium. And I still love it. I still love the feeling of the ball at my feet and the defender in front of me and the crowd around me. The day I stop loving that is the day I stop playing. That hasn't happened yet."

He stood up. Offered his hand. Armani shook it.

"See you at the next window," Bailey said. "Keep scoring."

He walked to the showers. Armani sat at his locker in the National Stadium in Kingston, the Jamaica shirt draped over his lap, the number seventeen on the back, the crest over the heart. Two caps. One goal. One assist. The senior international career begun.

He pulled out his phone and called his mother.

"Two nil," she said, before he could speak. "I watched. I'm losing my voice from screaming."

"Were you at the stadium?"

"Front row this time. Your aunt got better tickets. I saw everything. The turn on the right back. The pass to Bailey. Everything."

"Did you see Bailey's goal?"

"I saw your pass. That's what I saw." She paused. "Leon Bailey scored a beautiful goal. But my son made it. My son created it. That's what I'll tell people."

He laughed. His mother, loyal beyond reason, seeing everything through the lens of her son's contribution, the way she had always seen everything, the way she always would.

"I'll be home tomorrow," he said. "Flying to Kingston tonight, then MoBay in the morning. I want to see you before I go back to England."

"I'll cook. Whatever you want. Name it."

"Everything. Cook everything."

"Everything." She laughed. "Then come hungry."

He spent one day in Montego Bay. One day that was not enough and was everything.

His mother's house was the same. Smaller than he remembered, which was the trick that distance played on memory, making the places of childhood expand in recollection and contract in reality. The kitchen smelled the same. The yard looked the same. The view from the back window, the rooftops and the green hills and the sea beyond them, was the same view he had grown up with, the view that had been the background of his entire childhood, the view he had carried inside him to Lincoln and Barnsley and Cardiff and Middlesbrough and every other English city that was not this one.

His mother cooked everything. Curry goat and ackee and saltfish and rice and peas and fried plantain and bammy and festivals and a jug of sorrel that she had made using his grandmother's recipe, the deep red drink sweet and sharp and tasting of every Christmas and every Sunday and every celebration he had ever known.

They ate together at the kitchen table. Just the two of them. His mother talked and he listened and the food disappeared and the hours passed and the Montego Bay evening came on slow and warm, the light turning gold, the sound of the neighborhood settling into its nighttime rhythm.

"When do you fly back?" she asked.

"Tomorrow morning. Kingston to London. London to Barnsley."

"Back to the cold."

"Back to the cold."

She reached across the table and took his hand. Held it. Her hands were the same: strong, calloused, the hands of a woman who had worked physically for decades and whose body carried the evidence.

"I'm proud of you," she said. "Not for the goal. Not for the caps. For who you are. For the man you've become. That's what makes me proud."

He squeezed her hand. Said nothing. There was nothing to say that the squeeze didn't already contain.

He slept in his old bed that night, in his old room, the ceiling familiar, the sounds familiar, the smell of his mother's house wrapping around him the way the Kingston heat had wrapped around him at the airport, saying: you are home, this is home, remember.

In the morning, he packed his bag, kissed his mother, and flew back to England.

The Championship was waiting. The playoffs were waiting. The rest of the season was waiting.

He was ready for all of it.
