Chapter 350 - An Unrecorded Variable

Androxus stared at Adrian in silence, and for a brief moment, genuine shock rippled across his half-transparent features. He had concealed himself using a technique inherited from his Great Sect. Even within the domain of an enemy, most cultivators from Major Sects would have failed to detect him, and many junior disciples belonging to Great Sects would have needed specialized observation techniques merely to sense that something unusual existed within the chamber.

But Androxus didn't even sense an observation technique being used, and yet this being had found him.

There was only one conclusion Androxus could draw from that. The figure standing before him was powerful, and he had techniques that even his Great Sect didn't have.

That realization did not frighten Androxus as much as it fascinated him. He studied Adrian with the intense and evaluating gaze of a scholar who had unexpectedly discovered a specimen.

Across the chamber, Adrian observed the silver-skinned alien with equal caution. When he had expanded his Source Domain over the Providence Hub, he had sensed a powerful presence concealed somewhere within the golden spire and had come to investigate before it could escape or interfere with the Elyrians below. Now that they stood within the same enclosed space, Adrian could measure that presence far more clearly.

The alien felt significantly stronger than Navira.

"He should be at least an Anchor-stage sovereign," Adrian concluded internally as he carefully assessed the unfamiliar cultivator. "His mental pressure is stronger than hers, and his concealment technique is far beyond anything I have ever seen. But he is not a Yiphraen, and he is not wearing their robes."

Given what Adrian had learned about the wider universe, several possibilities formed immediately. The Ethereal Providence Sect possessed staggering wealth, generated through intergalactic commerce, slave markets, and the blood extraction of countless Elyrians. Navira could have hired an exceptionally powerful cultivator to serve as her hidden safeguard. Alternatively, the alien might have been an ancient ancestor of the sect who deliberately remained removed from its public affairs, intervening only when an existential threat emerged.

Whatever his origin, Adrian could feel that the man before him was dangerous.

Androxus took a step toward him without answering the question.

"I must admit," Androxus said, his voice smooth despite the tension saturating the chamber, "your threads have been woven flawlessly. To manipulate the board so thoroughly without alerting the watchers above is no minor accomplishment. Your Pavilion has certainly improved its methods."

Adrian stared at him, his expression blank. Internally, however, Adrian's mind stalled for a fraction of a second. "Threads? Watchers above? Pavilion?"

None of the terms meant anything to him. The alien spoke as though referring to a secret conflict whose rules and participants should have been obvious, but Adrian possessed no understanding of what he was implying. It sounded less like an answer and more like a collection of riddles designed to distract him while the man prepared something unseen.

Adrian's perception sharpened. He could feel minute fluctuations gathering around Androxus's consciousness, subtle enough that an ordinary Astral Stage cultivator might have mistaken them for natural mental activity. To Adrian, they resembled the earliest structure of a willforce technique being woven beneath the surface.

With a small turn of his wrist, a white-grey Source blade materialized in Adrian's hand. The weapon hummed softly as he raised it and pointed its edge directly toward Androxus.

"I do not care about your Pavilion or whatever watchers you believe are above us," Adrian replied flatly. "I asked who you are. Give me one reason why I should not erase you like the rest of the trash that occupied the plaza outside."

The blunt dismissal hung heavily within the chamber.

Androxus's silver eyes brightened with sudden understanding. The complete absence of recognition in Adrian's expression, combined with the contemptuous manner in which he dismissed the coded language, told him far more than any formal answer could have provided.

The Great Sects had strict rules when interacting with lesser factions. Their disciples could not openly announce their backgrounds, exploit the prestige of their factions, or casually reveal internal political conflicts to civilizations that had no right to know of them. Even Androxus could not simply declare that he was the personal disciple of a Great Sect elder without risking punishment from the very power he represented.

Because of those restrictions, he had deliberately used terminology known only among cultivators connected to the uppermost powers of the universe. References to threads, watchers above, and the Pavilion should have revealed his meaning instantly to anyone associated with a Great Sect.

Adrian's reaction left Androxus with two possibilities. Either the man was an unparalleled actor capable of hiding recognition even beneath the scrutiny of an Anchor-stage mind, or he possessed no affiliation with a Great Sect whatsoever.

Piecing together the authority-plundering technique and the usage of the Prime Arcane concept of Null, the second possibility felt far more likely.

That meant Androxus was not facing a disciple of the Heaven-Weaving Pavilion. He was confronting an unrecorded variable that had emerged from some forgotten corner of the universe without the known inheritance of the recognized Great Sects.

With this confirmed, Androxus immediately wanted to retreat. If this figure was merely one of the members of the hidden faction, then the implications extended far beyond the destruction of the Ethereal Providence Sect. A hidden faction possessing such abilities could already be moving pieces throughout the universe while the established powers remained completely unaware of its existence.

He needed to retreat, preserve the information he had gathered, and report this to his Master Damian.

Androxus lowered his head in a graceful bow.

"Ah, a misunderstanding," he said, softening his tone. "You have mistaken the reason for my presence here."

He straightened and clasped his hands loosely behind his back, presenting the composed and harmless posture of a wandering scholar. "I have no affiliation with the dead woman outside, nor do I possess any interest in the fate of this Hub. I am merely a traveller exploring the deeper currents of the universe. When I sensed a major clash gathering within this region, I entered the shadows so that I could observe the shifting tides without becoming involved."

Androxus gestured lightly toward the viewing port overlooking the ruined plaza. "You have already achieved your vengeance, and I must admit that the spectacle was remarkably enlightening. Since your purpose here appears to be concluded, I will take my leave and continue my journey."

He moved toward the side of the chamber with a slow and deliberate step. Every motion projected non-aggression, as though he genuinely expected Adrian to lower his weapon and permit a neutral observer to pass.

Adrian listened to the excuse without interruption.

The lie was delivered perfectly. Androxus's posture carried no obvious hostility, and the explanation was structured carefully enough to sound plausible. However, Adrian's instincts, which had been honed through countless encounters, rejected every part of the story.

He tilted his head slightly, and a faint smile appeared upon his face.

"A mere traveller," Adrian repeated as white-grey essence flared within his eyes, illuminating the deepest shadows of the chamber.

Adrian stepped forward and raised his Source blade slightly higher until the tip pointed directly at Androxus's chest.

"Let us examine the logic of your travels," Adrian said. "A neutral observer watching a battle from the sidelines would be understandable. However, a traveller does not embed himself inside here, the heart of the enemy's stronghold, while using a concealment technique."

Androxus stopped moving. The polite detachment upon his face froze, though his hands remained calmly clasped behind his back.

"You were not observing the changing tides of the universe," Adrian continued, his gaze remaining fixed upon him. "You positioned yourself where you could watch the plaza without being detected. You were waiting for me to engage Navira, waiting until my attention and willforce were completely focused upon her, and then you intended to attack from the shadows."

Adrian's smile disappeared, replaced by cold certainty. "Am I wrong?"

The silence that followed was absolute.

Androxus remained motionless while the calculations inside his mind shifted once again. Adrian had identified not only that he was lying but also the exact method through which he had intended to intervene in the battle.

The man standing before him was not merely a cultivator possessing incomprehensible power. He also possessed the instincts and reasoning of someone who had survived countless wars against intelligent opponents. There would be no bluffing his way out of the chamber.

The scholarly facade fell from Androxus's expression.

A low chuckle escaped his lips. He slowly released his hands from behind his back, and the robes surrounding his body began to flutter as though caught within an invisible, localized hurricane.

"You truly are fascinating," Androxus whispered.

His half-transparent silver eyes ignited with concentrated light. The density of Androxus's Anchor-stage willforce leaked into reality, freezing the ambient mana and forcing the reinforced walls to groan beneath a pressure they had never been designed to withstand.

"I had hoped to avoid a direct confrontation," Androxus said, his voice deepening as the pressure around him intensified. "However, since you are so eager to pull aside the curtain, let us discover whether your mind is as sharp as your tongue."

Before the final syllable finished echoing through the chamber, the space between them warped violently.

Androxus unleashed his willforce attack. There were no visible needles, blades, or condensed shapes of intent. Instead, the technique manifested as a smoky wave of willforce that crossed the distance between them in less than an instant.

Adrian did not retreat. With a single thought, his own willforce erupted. A translucent wall of concentrated willforce appeared before him, its layered structure reinforced through the perfect execution he had repeatedly observed within Source Form.

As the two Anchor-stage wills collided, the true battle of the Providence Hub had begun.
