A few moments before the micro-dimension shuddered, Adrian stood quietly on the balcony of his guest chamber.
Leaving Mariska to speak with her father, Adrian had turned his attention toward the artificial blue sky of the Elyrian Sanctuary. To the naked eye, the sky was a flawless imitation of a world, complete with drifting clouds and ambient light. But Adrian was not looking at the light.
He activated his Source Eyes. The white-grey radiance flared within his irises, instantly stripping away the visual illusion of the sanctuary's atmosphere. What revealed itself was an incomprehensible architecture of rules. Above the entire micro-dimension stretched an invisible web woven from interlocking chains of silver-white runes.
This was the Prime Arcane Concept of Severance.
Adrian's consciousness extended outward, brushing gently against the runes. He traced the silver-white chains with his mind, observing how the rules actively fought against the natural order of the universe. The concept continuously sheared away spatial coordinates, erased temporal footprints, and cut the fate threads that would have allowed an Astral Stage diviner to locate this dimension.
He pushed his perception deeper, bypassing the outer mechanisms of the Elyrian artifact and diving straight into the core of the concept itself. He wanted to understand the entirety of Severance.
As his mind pierced the final veil, the Will of the Prime Arcane Concept of Severance, dormant for billions of years, sensed the intrusion. Normally, the wills of Prime Arcane Concepts were impossibly arrogant and untamable. If a cultivator dared to touch them without the proper authority or comprehension, the concept's will would instantly descend to obliterate the trespasser, turning them into nothing more than cosmic dust.
The artificial sky cracked with a deafening roar.
…
Inside the Sovereign's Garden, King Elyras said, "Go. Bring this Adrian to me. Let me speak—"
Before he could continue his words, the entire micro-dimension shuddered. The white-marble castle groaned, the lush forests below whipped wildly as if caught in a hurricane, and the very gravity of the sanctuary fluctuated.
King Elyras staggered, his eyes widening in terror. For a man who had spent millions of years constantly looking over his shoulder, there was only one logical conclusion.
"We are found," the King gasped, his voice hollow with dread. "Navira... the Ethereal Providence Sect has breached the sanctuary!"
"No!" Mariska shouted, refusing to accept that their final haven had fallen just moments after she had found hope.
Her divine concept erupted instantly as she drew a slender blade from her spatial ring. "Father, it came from the guest wing! Senior Aeon is there!"
Without waiting for his command, Mariska's wings flared, and she launched herself into the sky, tearing toward the guest wing at maximum speed.
King Elyras gritted his teeth, his own Astral Stage aura flaring as he summoned his golden spear. He shot into the air right behind his daughter, his mind racing with desperate calculations. If the Ethereal Providence Sect had breached their defenses, then millions of his people were about to be slaughtered. He had to hold the frontline, even if it cost him his life.
They flew over the courtyards, rounding the spires of the castle, their weapons drawn and their intents locked in preparation for a massacre.
But as they broke through the cloud cover and arrived within sight of the guest wing's balconies, they both froze mid-air.
There were no invading armadas or the golden domains of the Yiphraen elders. Instead, they looked up and witnessed a scene that defied every established law of the universe.
Directly above the balcony where Adrian stood, the fabric of the micro-dimension had been torn wide open. From that jagged rift in reality, a manifestation of pure, silver-white conceptual energy had descended. Its form was a boundless, shifting blade of pure Severance that radiated an intent so sharp it felt as though it could cut the galaxy itself in half.
King Elyras felt his Astral Core tremble violently.
"The Will of Severance..." the King whispered, his voice trembling so badly he could barely form the words. The spear in his hand dipped. "The ancestral artifact has awakened... but why?"
He knew the nature of the artifact better than anyone. His ancestors had bled simply to forge the container that held a fraction of this concept's power. They had spent eras carefully siphoning its ambient energy just to hide their dimension. To see the true Will of the concept physically manifest outside the artifact was an unimaginable event.
"It's going to destroy the sanctuary! It's going to obliterate him!" Elyras thought in panic, watching the colossal blade of energy loom directly over Adrian.
But then, the impossible happened.
Adrian simply stood on the balcony, his hands resting casually behind his back, his white-grey eyes glowing as he looked up at the terrifying manifestation.
As the Will of Severance descended, its furious, untamable intent suddenly halted. It sensed what was standing before it. It felt the overwhelming presence of the Source gazing back at it.
The manifestation of silver-white energy shuddered. Then, in a motion that sent a shockwave of displaced air across the entire sanctuary, the towering entity slowly bent forward. The sharp edges of the conceptual manifestation folded downward, lowering its massive form toward the balcony.
It was bowing.
A Prime Arcane Concept, one of the foundational pillars of the universe's laws, was physically lowering itself in absolute, unquestioning reverence to the man standing on the balcony.
"By the heavens..." Mariska muttered, her domain flickering out completely as she stared at the scene, utterly paralyzed.
King Elyras's jaw went slack. The spear slipped from his grip entirely, tumbling down toward the gardens below.
As the manifestation finished its bow, its colossal form collapsed inward. In a blinding flash of silver light, the entity condensed into a concentrated sphere of pure Severance essence.
The sphere drifted gently downward, floating right up to Adrian's chest. It phased harmlessly through his white-grey robes, sinking directly into his Source Seed.
On the balcony, Adrian closed his eyes. Inside the infinite expanse of his Source Seed, a brand-new chamber forged itself. The overwhelming flood of knowledge, the rules of cutting space, isolating fate and causality, and severing temporal tracking, poured into him. His Source Seed pulsed, safely sealing the knowledge within the new chamber before it could strain his mind.
Adrian opened his eyes, the white-grey light slowly fading back to their normal, dark hue. He rolled his shoulders, letting out a soft, satisfied exhale.
He then turned his head, finally noticing King Elyras and Mariska hovering in the air a short distance away.
Adrian smiled faintly, stepping up to the edge of the balcony.
"I apologize for the disturbance," Adrian said, his voice calm, polite, and unbothered by what he had just done. "I was merely studying your sky, and it seems the concept decided to offer me its insights."
King Elyras floated slowly down to the balcony, his boots touching the marble with a heavy thud. He looked at Adrian, his chest heaving, his mind still struggling to process the reality of the man standing before him.
"You... it bowed to you..." the King stammered, forgetting the regal composure of a sovereign. "You just commanded a Prime Arcane Concept without shedding a single drop of blood."
Mariska landed softly beside her father, her wings folding away. She looked at Adrian with a reverence that bordered on outright worship. When she had told her father this man had shattered the Yiphraen elders as if they were children, she thought she understood his power. Now, she realized she hadn't even scratched the surface.
"I am Elyras, King of the Elyrians," the King finally managed to say, stepping forward and offering a deep bow that was usually reserved only for ancestors. "My daughter told me you possess power beyond comprehension. I see now that her words were an understatement. We owe you our lives, Senior."
Adrian nodded, accepting the greeting. "King Elyras. There is no need for such formalities. As I told your daughter, I despise the harvesting of sentient life. I came here to ensure your people can finally leave this cage."
A fragile hope ignited in the King's eyes. For millions of years, he had waited for a miracle. Now, the miracle was standing on his balcony, having just absorbed a Prime Arcane Concept as if he were taking a casual breath of air.
"Senior..." King Elyras began, his voice filled with emotion. "If you truly hold the power to stand against the Ethereal Providence Sect... I beg you, help us retrieve my son, the Crown Prince. If we can save him, our civilization will gladly follow you to the ends of the universe."
Adrian opened his mouth to reply, already prepared to formulate a tactical infiltration of the Inner Continents.
But before a single word could be spoken, frantic footsteps echoed from the corridor behind the guest chamber.
"Princess! My King!"
Levi, the Elyrian guard commander, sprinted out onto the balcony. His armor was clattering, his face drained of all color, and his eyes were wide with panic. In his hand, he clutched a small tablet.
"Levi, what is it?" Mariska demanded, stepping forward quickly.
"Princess," Levi gasped, his hands trembling as he held up the tablet. "A Hub-wide broadcast was just made."
Levi activated his tablet. A holographic projection flared into existence over the balcony, casting a golden light over their faces.
The image displayed the grand, opulent central plaza of the Ethereal Providence Sect's Inner Continent. The area was surrounded by thousands of runic barriers, and countless heavily armored guards stood in perfect formation.
But it was the center of the plaza that made Mariska's breath catch in her throat.
Bound to a massive, rune-carved stone was a male Elyrian. His once-magnificent wings were brutally pinned by glowing suppression chains. His head hung low, his body covered in the horrific scars of endless blood extraction, but his royal lineage was unmistakable.
It was the Crown Prince.
Then, the arrogant voice of Sect Leader Navira boomed from the projection, "To all who reside within the Providence Hub, let this serve as a decree. In fifteen hours, the Ethereal Providence Sect will commence a Grand Refinement."
King Elyras staggered back as if he had been physically struck, his hands flying to his mouth. "No... no, no..."
Navira's broadcast continued, "To demonstrate the price of defying our rule, the Elyrian Crown Prince will be publicly refined in the central plaza. His essence will be burned before the eyes of millions. The Grand Refinement will be broadcast across multiple networks so that all may witness the fate of those who forget their place."
The projection froze on the image of the chained prince, the bold text of the decree flashing at the bottom of the screen.
Mariska fell to her knees, her hands clutching her head as a scream of pure, helpless agony tore from her throat. "Brother! No! We have to go now! We have to save him!"
"It's a trap," King Elyras whispered, his voice hollow with despair. He looked at Adrian, his eyes swimming with tears. "They know Mariska escaped. They know an unknown person helped her. They are doing this publicly because they want to draw you out. If we go there tomorrow, the entire might of their Major Sect will be waiting."
The King dropped to his knees next to his daughter, the crushing weight of reality suffocating the brief hope he had just found. "It's a slaughterhouse... and they are inviting us to walk through the front doors."
Levi stood frozen, his head bowed, unable to offer a single word of comfort. The trap was so blatant that walking into the central plaza tomorrow would mean facing the entire concentrated firepower and authority of a Lesser Major Sect in their own home.
Amidst the despair and the weeping, a soft, amused chuckle broke the heavy silence.
King Elyras and Mariska looked up, their tear-streaked faces turning toward the sound.
Adrian stood at the edge of the balcony, his arms loosely crossed over his chest. He was looking at the glowing projection of the Grand Refinement decree, but there was no fear or despair in his eyes.
Instead, a slow, cold smile spread across his face.
"A trap?" Adrian mused, "No, King Elyras. This isn't a trap."
"They lit a fire because they are terrified of the shadows," Adrian said, his gaze locking onto the projected image of Navira's stronghold. "They want to force me to walk through their front doors because they think controlling the terrain will save them."
He turned to look down at the kneeling King and Princess, his smile sharpening into a predatory one.
"Get up, Mariska. Gather your weapons," Adrian commanded, "Since they went through the trouble of inviting the entire Hub to watch... let's go see how brightly their central plaza burns."
