The S.W.O.R.D. facility lay in ruins. The once-sterile halls were twisted and torn by the aftermath of a violent antimatter surge. Fires sputtered along containment corridors, emergency lights blinked feebly, and sections of the ceiling sagged where metal had warped from the explosion. The acrid scent of scorched circuits filled the air.
Director Reiz stood silently amid the wreckage of the Null Array chamber. Reinforced glass littered the floor, and the once-precise energy rings were now warped, smoldering husks. Her gaze lingered on the gaping crater where Adam Brashear had stood—now frighteningly empty. For a moment, she was frozen, her thoughts racing. Then, the sound of approaching footsteps pulled her back.
"We've lost visual," a technician said, coughing through the smoke. His face was streaked with soot, and his hands trembled as he looked at the shattered monitors. "There's no signal. No trace of him."
Reiz's jaw tightened. Her expression gave little away, but her mind was already spinning with contingencies. "Shut down every portal. Scramble the satellites with quantum sensors. I want Adam Brashear found—quietly. Especially before the media catches wind of this."
An agent approached quickly, one hand pressed to her earpiece. "Ma'am, the Pentagon and the UN Security Council are demanding answers. They know something's happened."
Reiz exhaled slowly. "Tell them we have it under control. And activate the Echelon Protocol. If Blue Marvel resurfaces, we control the narrative—he's a threat. Understood?"
Smoke stung Eliza's eyes as she moved through the collapsing lower levels. Her muscles screamed with every step, but she pressed forward, weaving through fallen pipes and flickering lights. Sparks rained down from torn conduits as she passed shattered security doors.
At last, she reached a pressure hatch and slapped her palm onto the manual release. The door hissed open with a groan, letting in a rush of cold night air. She inhaled sharply, the freezing wind clearing her lungs.
Outside, a cloaked quinjet shimmered into view, its form emerging from active camouflage. From the shadows of the ramp, a tall woman stepped down—short green hair, arms crossed, expression unreadable.
"Eliza," said Abigail Brand. "You look like hell."
Eliza almost fell over, bracing herself against the doorway. "You should see the other guy," she muttered, managing a faint, tired smile before coughing.
Brand moved quickly, steadying her. "Did the Array fail?"
Eliza nodded. "He's out. And Reiz already pulled the trigger on Echelon."
Brand's face darkened. "Of course she did. We need to move."
Far away, nestled deep in the quiet Carpathian Mountains, Adam Brashear stirred.
The air was sharp and cold. Snow drifted from ashen clouds, blanketing the forest in white. Adam lay sprawled on scorched earth, surrounded by twisted, blackened trees and shattered rocks from the energy blast.
He groaned, pushing himself upright. His head pounded, and every muscle in his body ached. A soft, unstable glow pulsed beneath his skin—the antimatter field was still active, flickering.
"Where... where am I?" he murmured, blinking against the snowfall.
His thoughts reeled—flashes of Eliza's voice, Reiz's order, the explosion. He tried to stand but nearly lost his footing on an icy patch. Stumbling forward, he found a nearby stream and plunged his hands into the frigid water, splashing his face.
The cold snapped him into clarity. His breathing slowed. The glow under his skin calmed but didn't disappear.
Just focus. You can contain this. You've done it before.
Then came the sound—footsteps crunching in the snow. Not random. Measured. Tactical.
He turned.
Three soldiers stepped from the trees, clad in sleek tactical armor. Their visors glowed faint red, rifles aimed steadily.
"Target located," one of them said. "Blue Marvel. You're coming with us. Do not resist."
Adam slowly raised his hands, his eyes flickering with light. "I'm not looking for a fight."
The soldiers didn't stop. They tightened formation.
"I'm serious," Adam added, tone low but clear. "You don't understand what you're walking into."
"Get down!" one shouted.
Adam's jaw clenched. A violet ripple moved across his skin.
"I warned you."
The air shimmered.
In an instant, a burst of antimatter energy exploded outward. Snow blasted into the sky, trees splintered, and the soldiers were thrown into the dark. When the light faded, only Adam stood—alone, breathing hard, the crater wide around him.
"I didn't want this..." he said softly, voice raw with regret.
