Michael had been staring at the same communication for several minutes without touching it.
The screen was still open on the old message, its date sitting near the top of the page. He had read it so many times that the words should have stopped carrying meaning. Instead, one part kept bothering him.
The instruction was too simple.
M had been given one job.
Confirm that Silas had not taken control of the evidence.
That was it.
Michael leaned back in his chair and looked toward the window of the room. The blinds were half closed, leaving only a narrow strip of daylight across the floor. He had been kept away from the internet, away from most outside communication, and away from the information that had been spreading around him. His lawyer had been bringing him updates when he could, but the questions in Michael's head had nothing to do with headlines anymore.
Someone had changed the evidence.
That much was obvious.
The problem was that the changes had not been careless.
