Chapter 236 - Hyūga Firmware Update Successful

A few weeks later, the fusion process was finally complete.

Kanae sent word for him to come see her progress, her tone unusually mysterious.

Ryusei followed her out to a quiet clearing behind the hideout, where the morning mist still clung to the grass.

She stood there with her back turned, her long hair swaying faintly as she waited.

His eyes couldn't help but wander, not just to her eyes, but to how much she'd 'changed' lately in general.

She caught his gaze immediately and snorted. "You're not here to evaluate that kind of progress," she said coolly, though her voice wavered slightly.

Ryusei smirked. "Can you blame me? You said you wanted me to observe. I'm just being thorough."

Her lips twitched, but before she could come up with a retort, she realized just how close he'd walked while talking.

Ryusei wasn't the same boy from before; his powerful build now also visibly matched any adult elite shinobi's, in height, broad shoulders, and sharp lines defined by all that impossible training, though his face still held that deceptively calm youthfulness that made him infuriating to deal with.

Kanae felt the heat rise to her cheeks before she could stop it and quickly looked away.

"You're getting insufferable," she muttered, half under her breath.

Ryusei leaned slightly closer, voice low and teasing. "You mean more distracting?"

Her heart skipped, and she glared to cover it up. "Focus on my eyes, not my body, idiot."

He chuckled, amused, but obeyed, though his grin said he'd already won this round.

Kanae stood in front of him, her expression calm but her posture radiating confidence. "Watch closely," she said quietly. "And feel it carefully."

Ryusei nodded, activating his sensory field as she slowly opened her new eyes.

The air shifted instantly.

Her chakra surged outward like a ripple through still water, and Ryusei's own Byakugan, unveiled from behind his eyepatch, flared in response.

He studied her intently.

The emission from her chakra network was denser, sharper, its pulse steady yet powerful.

Physically, her eyes hadn't changed much, just a new faint luminescent sheen, the lines inside the eyes a bit more defined, and the irises slightly deeper in color, as if they had more layers now.

Not a Tenseigan, not even close, but undeniably something new, so Ryusei was not too disappointed.

Instead, his focus sharpened when he sensed it, tiny, foreign particles flickering faintly in the air, resonating with the same frequency as the power radiating from her new eyes.

They shimmered for a brief instant, almost imperceptible, like the atmosphere itself was reacting to her presence.

"Interesting…" he murmured, eyes narrowing with intrigue.

Kanae didn't wait for his commentary.

She suddenly thrust her palm forward, releasing a Vacuum Palm straight at him.

The gust cracked through the clearing like a cannon blast, stirring the mist and shaking the ground.

Ryusei didn't even move.

The strike hit him cleanly in the chest, his body barely flinching as the shockwave dispersed around him.

He simply stood there, eyes half-lidded, observing the energy structure of her attack.

The vibrations, the chakra compression, even the way the impact seemed to drag at the air itself, it was nothing like her old techniques.

"Still standing there like a statue?" Kanae crossed her arms, a faint smirk playing at her lips. "I was hoping for a little reaction, at least."

Ryusei exhaled faintly through his nose, amused. "That's all you've got? You're still ages away from being able to hurt me."

Her smirk tightened, and she snorted softly, tilting her head to the side. "I wasn't trying to hurt you, genius. I just wanted to see if your observation skills are still worth my time."

Ryusei's gaze lingered on her, noting the way her hands had settled on her hips, posture relaxed but expectant. She was waiting for him to say it.

He stepped closer, his tone teasing. "Fine, fine. You've done well."

His lips curved slightly. "You even managed to surprise me for a second."

Kanae looked away quickly, hiding the faint color rising on her cheeks.

"Don't overdo it," she said, but her voice came out softer than she meant it to.

Ryusei smirked. "You're welcome anyway."

Inside, however, Ryusei was already overflowing with many fresh insights and conclusions stemming from this brief but pivotal overview, many of them directly connected to his vision of the step needed for reaching the highest levels of power he dreamed of, which was acquiring the Tenseigan at some point for himself somehow.

He now realized that the next stage of the Byakugan followed the same foundational principles as the ordinary one, just elevated to another level.

Unlike the Sharingan's further evolutions, which granted manifestations of tilted Yin chakra, conceptual or illusory powers, and otherworldly constructs like Susanoo, the Byakugan's growth was also much simpler in essence, just like it was during the baseline as well.

Instead of birthing new "concepts," it refined and converted the chakra energy itself.

Those same eyes, which until now only observed the world, could now begin to act on it, empowering the user's chakra into a more specialized energy, one capable of interacting with and even influencing the surrounding environment, from nearby matter to perhaps natural energy itself.

"So this is also the secret of Kaguya's Eighty Gods Vacuum Attack…" Ryusei thought.

He should've realized it earlier. It fit perfectly. The logic was elegant: perception evolving into influence. A perfect continuation of Yin-Yang balance through function, not spectacle.

This was the most logical evolution for the Byakugan, fitting for what he knew about the Hyuga, and for everything else tied to their lineage.

If the Byakugan represented a more stable dojutsu than the Sharingan, then that same simplicity, baseline utility, and versatility would also define its higher forms.

That, he concluded, was the real difference between the Tenseigan and the Rinnegan as well.

It also confirmed what he suspected about the difference between the Tenseigan and the Rinnegan. While both could create and control Truth-Seeking balls, the differences were always larger.

The Rinnegan was creative chaos, six divergent paths, complex, specialized, like a web of individual hax-type abilities born from more Yin-based creativity.

The Tenseigan, however, was stability incarnate.

Simpler, more focused.

It embodied pure chakra evolution, raw and unified. Instead of fragmenting into powers, it refined one overwhelming force.

The Tenseigan didn't fragment its power; it condensed it into pure, unified force.

Its signature Chakra Mode, likely born from that same refined ocular energy, enhanced the user's body to its absolute limit, while that very energy could also be projected outward, shaping and influencing the environment through specialized techniques.

It wasn't manipulating gravity; it was chakra density so overwhelming that it behaved like gravity itself.

He could already see faint cracks spreading beneath their feet, feel the faint heaviness pressing against his own skin. "So that's it," he murmured quietly. "Byakugan's pressure… I hadn't noticed before."

Ryusei studied it longer, nodding in appreciation.

A simple but devastatingly efficient ability.

By converting ocular power into chakra pressure, the user could exert a gravitational-like force across their surroundings, an elegant weapon of control and dominance.

Of course, compared to what Kaguya showed with her Byakugan when she revived, the power was still limited, but Ryusei was content.

He finally grasped the core principle behind it—the direction of evolution.

He smiled faintly. "So that's the real design. Sharingan's growth is chaotic—creative, individual, unpredictable. Byakugan's is stable—linear, cumulative, inevitable."

The same difference echoed upward into their highest forms.

It was simple. Logical. Predictable. And that made it all the more dangerous.
