Chapter 198: Assault on the Lunar Base II
Tolle copied Milliardo's maneuver, closing in at high speed on the enemy and driving his high-speed–rotating lance straight through its target.
Then, aiming at a nearby Taurus drone, he fired a beam rifle to suppress it.
However, the drone's reaction was too fast—every beam shot missed.
Tolle had no choice but to change tactics. He focused his mind, accelerated again to gain distance, and searched for the densest cluster of Taurus drones.
The Tallgeese Wing Zero folded its movable wings, raised the spinning lance so that it aligned vertically with the body, and then charged forward at full speed—a simplified version of the Super Buster Meteor attack.
When the charge ended, Tolle lifted his beam rifle and unleashed a storm of fire on the surrounding Taurus drones, taking down seven or eight units in one go.
Then, piloting the Tallgeese Wing Zero, he stowed the rifle and raised the destructive beam cannon, sweeping the airspace with continuous beam fire.
After several wide sweeps, over a dozen drones were obliterated. But the Lunar Base personnel had learned their lesson—this time, the Taurus formations spread out, dragging the battle out to buy time for the other squadrons attacking the Barge fortress.
Tolle could only pilot the Tallgeese Wing Zero to pursue the scattered drones one by one, closing the distance before attacking each target.
The Taurus drones fired back continuously, beam rifles blazing—a rain of light poured toward Tolle.
He folded the Tallgeese Wing Zero's movable wings and used them to block the incoming fire.
The beams struck the retracted wings, but they barely caused any real damage.
When the enemy's barrage ended, the Tallgeese Wing Zero spread its wings again and soared upward to resume its assault.
On Lady's side, she and her team were also battling the Taurus drones. The soldiers under her command were all piloting Space-type Leos. Their results weren't great, but counting their earlier surprise attacks, they had still managed to destroy twenty or thirty units.
Lady kept operating the Mercurius's reflective field generators, blocking the incoming beam cannon fire from the Taurus units to protect her allies.
She also fired her beam gun repeatedly—so fast it was practically being used like a machine gun.
Still, Lady was primarily a commander; her MS piloting skills weren't top-tier. From the start of the battle until now, she hadn't taken down many drones herself.
Fortunately, with Tolle in the Tallgeese Wing Zero dominating the battlefield, Lady was able to lead over a dozen Space-type Leos past the enemy defenses and into the entrance tunnel of the Lunar Base.
Seeing Lady's breakthrough, Tolle suddenly realized that things might go wrong—he had forgotten to warn her about Tsubarov inside the base, or the possible presence of new model MD drones.
He knew that Lady had nearly died here once before, shot by Tsubarov's handgun. But with her current nano-armor created from neo DG cells, a mere handgun shouldn't be able to kill her anymore.
However, there were plenty of new MD drones in the base—Virgos, which combined the strengths of both the Vayeate and Mercurius units.
Against those Virgo beam cannons, even the nano-armor might not be enough to keep her alive.
Before long, the battlefield would likely be swarming with Virgo drones—but Tolle didn't care about anyone else's fate. Protecting Lady's life was his one and only priority.
He grew anxious and rushed toward her location in the Tallgeese Wing Zero.
After the Space-type Leos blasted open the first gate with their beam cannons, Lady opened her cockpit and climbed out, saying to the soldiers:
"Leave the task of seizing the MD production plant to you."
The soldiers were startled to see their commander disembark. "Lieutenant Colonel, where are you going? Do you need an escort?"
"No need. I'm going to release the Gundam pilots. Lord Treize would wish for that as well." With that, Lady quickly slipped away through a nearby side door.
Just then, Tolle arrived on the scene. Seeing that the second gate hadn't yet opened, he finally let out a sigh of relief.
As soon as the second gate was blasted open by beam cannon fire, a swarm of new MD Virgo units appeared, raising their beam cannons and firing directly at the doorway.
Tolle, already prepared, deployed the reflective field generators, forming a massive electromagnetic shield to protect the Space-type Leos and Lady's Mercurius.
Then he raised his lance and charged in, the high-speed rotating tip piercing through one Virgo after another, precisely avoiding their power cores.
Meanwhile, Lady reached the sub-control room and activated the oxygen supply to the prison cells. Tsubarov found her there and pointed a pistol at her.
"Never thought I'd lose this badly! But even so, for you, this will still end as an execution."
With her back to Tsubarov, Lady replied mockingly, "Is that so? Then I'll trouble you to perform the execution yourself. For the crimes I've committed under OZ, death would be more than deserved."
Taking advantage of the moment, Lady opened the cells holding Duo and Wufei, freeing them to escape and launch in the Deathscythe Gundam and the Altron Gundam.
Then she turned calmly to face Tsubarov and said, "Go on then—shoot me, Tsubarov. Prove yourself."
"Lady Une, you're too naive. Did you really think I wouldn't do it?" As he spoke, Tsubarov pulled the trigger. A bullet fired from the gun, flying straight toward Lady's heart.
Just as it was about to strike her spacesuit, a thin layer of energy formed over her body, deflecting the bullet and sending it ricocheting off to the side.
