The Ruin's Forest had grown unusually quiet in the late afternoon.
Golden light spilled through twisted branches, cutting through the thick canopy like fractured blades. The air felt heavier than usual—as if the forest itself was holding its breath.
Ivandoe Horntail wiped sweat from his brow and sheathed his training sword after another exhausting sparring session with Bert.
For days now, the pattern had not changed.
Train.
Survive.
Adapt.
Run drills through unstable terrain. Learn to sense magical currents in the air. Build shelters from nothing. Fight off the mischievous forest sprites that appeared without warning, testing their reflexes and patience alike.
And yet… something inside Ivandoe was changing.
Ever since the Paradox Hyperbook awakened beneath the ancient tree, a strange energy had remained in his body—quiet, dormant… but alive.
Waiting.
Narissa stepped beside him, brushing leaves from her cloak. Her black eyes scanned the forest ahead with calm precision.
"Ivandoe… do you feel that?" she asked softly.
He paused.
Closed his eyes.
At first—nothing.
Then it came.
A pull.
Not toward danger.
Not toward safety.
But toward something deeper.
"Yeah," he said slowly. "It's like… the forest is guiding us."
Narissa didn't answer immediately. Instead, she pointed.
Half-hidden beneath moss and tangled roots was a narrow stone path.
Neither of them had seen it before.
"…That wasn't there yesterday," Ivandoe muttered.
"Then it wants us to find it," Narissa replied.
A brief silence passed.
Then Ivandoe nodded.
"Let's go."
The deeper they walked, the more the forest changed.
The trees grew thicker, darker—twisting unnaturally as if reacting to their presence. The air vibrated faintly, carrying a low magical hum that pressed against their skin.
Narissa slowed.
"This place… doesn't feel natural."
Ivandoe didn't respond immediately.
The Paradox within him pulsed once.
Stronger.
"I can feel it," he said. "It's connected… to something important."
The path ended at a massive cavern carved into the side of a rocky hill.
Cold air poured from within like a breath from something ancient.
The entrance felt wrong.
Alive.
Narissa crossed her arms. "We should be careful."
Ivandoe stepped forward anyway.
And together, they entered.
The Sword Awakens
The cavern walls shimmered with faint mineral veins, reflecting what little light filtered inside. Every step echoed unnaturally loud.
Deeper.
Deeper.
Until the chamber opened.
At its center stood a stone pedestal.
And on it—
A sword.
Not ordinary.
Not human-crafted.
The blade shimmered with shifting violet and sapphire energy, as if reality itself bent around it. Light rippled along its edges like liquid thought.
Narissa froze.
"Ivandoe… that's not normal."
He didn't answer.
The Paradox Hyperbook at his side flickered violently.
Then—
A voice filled his mind.
Ancient.
Heavy.
Unmistakable.
"With this sword… you will harness the power of the Paradox."
Ivandoe swallowed.
Another pulse.
"But power always demands cost."
His hand trembled as he reached for it.
Narissa stepped closer. "Ivandoe… I don't like this."
"I know," he whispered.
But he still grabbed the hilt.
The moment he did—
Energy exploded outward.
The entire cavern shook.
"RUN!" Ivandoe shouted.
They sprinted as the ceiling fractured above them.
Stone cracked.
Dust rained.
The cavern screamed.
Massive rocks fell behind them as they burst into the forest—
Return to the Group
BOOM.
The entrance collapsed entirely.
Bert and several students stood nearby, frozen in shock.
"Ivandoe!" Bert shouted. "Where were you?!"
Then he saw it.
The sword.
"…What is that?"
Ivandoe looked down.
"I don't know yet," he said. "But it's part of the Paradox."
Narissa stepped in quickly. "We deal with that later. We regroup now."
And then—
The forest screamed.
High-pitched screeches erupted from above.
The trees exploded with movement.
A swarm of Varteries burst into the air—small winged creatures with jagged claws and glowing red eyes.
Their screeches filled the forest like tearing metal.
Ivandoe's eyes widened.
"Get ready!"
Narissa immediately moved.
"DEFENSIVE FORMATION!"
Two students stepped forward:
Elwes and Mira.
Their Hyperbooks opened instantly.
Massive translucent barriers expanded outward.
"Shield wall deployed!" Elwes shouted.
The first wave slammed into it.
BOOM.
Bert and other several students fired projectiles into the swarm.
Gravity blasts from the rear lines.
Energy bolts followed.
Arrows from Elara pierced through gaps in the swarm.
Above them, Aria's Music Hyperbook erupted in rapid rhythm—enhancing reflexes across the team.
"Move with the sound!" she called.
Kaito activated his temporal manipulation—slowing select Varteries mid-flight.
Thane and Ryker engaged at the front with blades drawn, cutting through any that broke through.
Ivandoe stepped forward.
The Sword of the Paradox pulsed in his grip.
Each swing released arcs of violet energy.
But—
The swarm adapted.
"They're changing formation!" Narissa shouted. "They're learning us!"
Ivandoe's Hyperbook suddenly flashed.
A message appeared:
VARTERIES ARE NOT THE TRUE THREAT. LOOK TO THE SHADOWS.
His eyes narrowed.
"What does that mean…?"
Then he saw it.
Deep inside the swarm—
A glowing crystal pulsed like a heartbeat.
Controlling them.
"I see it!" Ivandoe shouted. "That crystal—it's controlling them!"
No hesitation.
He dashed forward.
The team pushed behind him, breaking through the swarm.
Elara and Aria cleared paths.
Thane held flanks.
Ryker shielded the rear.
Narissa stayed close to Ivandoe.
The crystal pulsed violently as he approached.
Reality around it distorted slightly.
Ivandoe raised the Paradox Sword.
"End this!"
A single strike.
CRACK—
The crystal shattered.
Silence hit instantly.
The Varteries froze mid-air.
Then dissolved into ash-like fragments.
The forest fell still.
Ivandoe's Hyperbook flashed again:
PARADOX ALERT ENTITY NEUTRALIZED UNKNOWN PRESENCE DETECTED WARNING: INTENTIONS UNKNOWN
Slowly.
Ivandoe looked up.
Between the trees—
A figure stood.
Tall.
Motionless.
Darkness clung to it unnaturally, swallowing light around it.
Narissa stepped beside him.
"Ivandoe… that thing—"
"I'll handle it," he said quietly.
She hesitated.
Then nodded.
"You're not alone."
The others began retreating under Narissa's order.
Soon—
Only Ivandoe remained.
Sword raised slightly.
Breathing steady.
The forest went completely silent.
The figure stepped forward.
And the system inside his Hyperbook pulsed one final warning:
EXTREME CAUTION POWER LEVEL: UNKNOWN
Ivandoe tightened his grip.
"…Let's see what you are."
The shadow moved again.
And destiny shifted.
