Pentos was a city of masks. Not the carved wooden kind worn at masquerades, but the invisible ones everyone wore every day.
Merchants wore the mask of generosity while weighing every deal to the coin.
Sailors wore the mask of loyalty until a richer offer came along.
And the Magisters — the city's ruling class — wore masks so layered that even they forgot what their real faces looked like.
Alex knew this truth before he'd even set foot in the Magister's private quarters.
The Invitation
It came in the form of a runner — a thin boy no older than ten, dressed in fine but practical tunic and sandals. He arrived at Alex's loft at dawn, looking as though he'd been up all night.
"Message for you," the boy said, holding out a sealed scroll.
Alex didn't take it immediately. His Pack Instinct hummed, sensing no immediate danger, but his Lie Detection flickered faintly — the boy was nervous, though not about Alex.
The seal was gold, pressed with a sigil Alex had seen before in old trade ledgers: three silver towers on a black field.
Magister Corlyn Rhaezar.
A powerful man. A dangerous one.
Alex broke the seal and read.
I have heard of your… capabilities. Discretion. Efficiency. A mind suited to subtler labors.
Present yourself at my estate this evening after sunset. Alone.
There was no signature — just the sigil.
Assessing the Risk
Rhaezar was not known for wasting words. He was a man with fingers in the shipping guilds, the spice markets, and at least three mercenary contracts that operated quietly under the guise of "private security."
Working for him would mean access — direct routes into the upper tiers of Pentoshi politics.
It would also mean scrutiny. And scrutiny could kill.
Alex sat back and weighed it.
The web he'd built so far was sturdy, but it was made of low- and mid-tier players. Useful, but replaceable. A Magister's attention was an entirely different currency.
In the end, the decision was simple.
The Visit
The Rhaezar estate sat on a terraced hill overlooking the bay, with gardens that smelled of orange blossoms even in the evening air. Guards at the gate checked for weapons. Alex allowed them to see his short dagger — not the Dragon-Forged one — and let them confiscate it.
They missed the thin stiletto sewn into his boot.
Inside, the halls were lined with tapestries depicting trade fleets and cityscapes. It was less a home and more a declaration: I own Pentos.
Alex was led to a private sitting room, where Rhaezar waited with a glass of red wine. The man was tall, broad-shouldered, with silver hair cut short and a sharp, assessing gaze.
"Alex Murray," Rhaezar said, as though tasting the name. "You've been busy."
Alex didn't respond. Silence was often worth more than clever words.
The Magister smiled faintly. "You're not going to pretend you don't know why you're here, are you?"
"No," Alex said simply.
Rhaezar's smile widened a fraction. "Good. I prefer honesty — or at least the appearance of it."
The Offer
"I need a man who can move unseen," Rhaezar said, leaning forward. "Who can gather information, deliver messages, and occasionally… adjust the course of events. Someone without a public face."
Alex tilted his head slightly. "And in return?"
"Coin. Access. And my protection, which in Pentos is worth more than either."
The Magister's tone carried no arrogance — it was simply a fact.
Alex met his gaze. "I'll need to operate without interference."
Rhaezar raised an eyebrow. "From me, or from others?"
"Both."
A slow nod. "Agreed. But in exchange, I expect results that match the stories I've heard about you."
Alex didn't ask what stories — better to let the man think his reputation was even greater than it was.
System Passive – Lie Detection
No signs of deception detected in Rhaezar's voice.
The First Task
Rhaezar slid a folded parchment across the table.
"Merchant captain named Jareth Vohrin. Owns three vessels, trades in silks and rare wood from Qohor. Lately, his cargo manifests have been… incomplete."
Alex unfolded the parchment. Inside was a schedule of Vohrin's ship arrivals and a list of warehouses.
"I want proof," Rhaezar said. "And if you find out who's buying the unlisted goods, I want that as well."
"When?"
"Within a week."
Alex nodded. "Done."
The Work
The next night, Alex began shadowing Vohrin's operations. He stationed his raven above the Blue Docks and linked his senses for short bursts through Beast Mind-Link, tracking the movement of crates. His dogs patrolled the alley behind Vohrin's favored tavern, while two bribed dockhands fed him names of crew members.
By the third night, a pattern emerged.
The unlisted cargo — heavy wooden crates stamped with a black fish symbol — never went to Vohrin's official warehouses. Instead, they were loaded onto smaller boats that ferried them to a private cove north of the city.
The Confrontation
Alex didn't report yet.
He followed one of the small boats on foot along the coastal cliffs until he saw the cove — guarded by four men and stacked with crates.
He moved closer under Silent Focus, ignoring the chill wind and the crash of waves. The system tagged the scent of black pepper from the crates, but beneath it was something sharper — burnt resin.
He pried one crate open. Inside were bundles of lacquered wood, carved with intricate runes. Not Qohor work. Not Essosi trade goods.
And certainly not legal.
Passive Analysis – Object Detected
Item: Carved Firewood Totems – Smuggled Ritual Components
Copyable Trait: Residual Ember Resonance (Level 0)
→ Slight resistance to heat and flame when active.
→ Not inherently magical, but reacts to specific fire-based rituals.
Alex copied it. Not because he needed fire resistance now, but because it might one day be the difference between surviving a dragon's breath or burning alive.
Copy Initiated – Residual Ember Resonance (Level 0)
Object Copy Limit Remaining: 0 / 1
When he returned to Rhaezar, he brought two things: proof of Vohrin's smuggling and the location of the cove.
The Magister's eyes gleamed as he read the details.
"Efficient," he said. "And quiet."
He slid a heavy purse of coin across the table. Alex took it without counting — Rhaezar would respect that.
The Warning
As Alex turned to leave, Rhaezar spoke again.
"You're going to find that I have many enemies, Alex. Some will try to reach me through you. Be sure you can tell the difference between my friends and my enemies."
Alex paused. "And if I can't?"
Rhaezar smiled coldly. "Then you'll learn. Quickly."
Walking back through the streets of Pentos that night, Alex understood what he'd just done. He had stepped into a deeper game — one where every player could buy an army with the coin in their desk drawer, and every move was meant to set up the kill three turns later.
It was dangerous.
It was exactly where he needed to be.
System Summary – End of Chapter:
New Trait: Residual Ember Resonance (Level 0) – Minor heat and fire resistance.
Pack Instinct Synergy: Urban pack tests successful.
Network Expansion: Merchant captain's trade routes mapped.
Influence Level: Entry into Magister-level politics achieved.
