Victoria, who already knew the truth — that I was the one who had planted the bomb on the plane — looked at Maya with a faint trace of guilt in her eyes.
She spoke in a calm, steady voice, deliberately steering the conversation away from further speculation.
"We don't know for certain. It might have just been an accident. Let's not think too much about it right now. We can discuss everything properly tomorrow when we're rested."
Maya hesitated for a moment, then nodded. She lay back down beside me, turning onto her side so that she faced me, and closed her eyes.
Victoria gave us one last glance before stepping back outside to resume her watch by the fire, staying alert for any animals or other threats on the unfamiliar island.
